Modern Ideas in Chess by Richard Reti Pdf

Modern Ideas in Chess is a series of 45 essays dealing with the evolution of game, its leading players, their ideas and contributions to their respective periods. The chronology starts in the Romantic era of Anders-sen and Morphy, continues through the Classical School of Steinitz, Tarrasch, Lasker, and runs to the dawn of the Hypermodern Revolution; the 70 year stretch from 1852 to 1922. Working in small chunks Rti had to be selective in what he extracted from each player and period. Plus the individual elements all had to tie in with the larger canvass Rti was painting for his readers. You dont have to get too far into the book to realize that Rti was a creative artist using the tension of chess ideas to reflect the larger intellectual struggle of mankind. How does Rti do it? A solid chess foundation obviously helps, also keen observation of the human experience coupled with a powerful command of language. Together these serve up indelible images that stick in the mind of the reader and lift this work far above the ordinary. Modern Ideas in Chess is one of the rare books that transcends the time frame in which it was written. It stands on its own, timeless, one of the true classics in the literature of the game.

Masters of the Chessboard by Richard Reti Pdf

Réti's "Other” Classic Ask most chessplayers about the works by Richard Réti, and most will quickly reply Modern Ideas in Chess. His Masters of the Chessboard will be a distant second and that is unfortunate, because in many ways Masters is more comprehensive and instructive than its better-known predecessor. He packs it with advice, even for beginners. Opening theory is a priority. Réti tells the student to understand "the basic idea” of each opening, and goes into considerable detail as he explains each of the popular lines of the day, including, of course, his own Réti Opening. Some of the finest parts of the book are the mini-essays, most of them on openings, but also on rook endgames. It's remarkable that Réti manages to do this without going into long variations. This practical approach is also evident when he deals with positional themes. For example, Masters can be appreciated as almost a primer on the subject of how to turn the two bishops into a significant advantage. As noted by American grandmaster Andy Soltis in his Foreword, this entire book is "wonderfully instructive.” And now it is available in a 21st-century edition, with figurine algebraic notation, with many diagrams and photos added.

New Ideas in Chess by Larry Evans Pdf

One of the most famous chess strategy classics, updated and revised with modern algebraic notation. In one of the most influential chess books written, readers will learn the most important strategy, tactics and themes that comprise a successful chess game: space, time, force and pawn structure. In a book that has been called the “bible for novice to intermediate players,” Evans uses actual game examples to illustrate dozens of chess themes. Each is a mini-lesson that illustrates the fundamental concepts of modern chess theory, ones that can be learned in easy, quick sittings. Evans discusses space (mobility, the center, controlling unoccupied squares, stability.), time (development, gambits, pins, tactics), force (relative values, sacrifices), and pawn structure (passed, connected, isolated and backward pawns), showing players how to weave these concepts together for a stronger and winning chess game. Features 200 diagrams and, for the first time, chess notation in modern algebraic notation making the book accessible to a new generation of chess players who couldn’t read the antiquated notation of the original.

Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy by John Watson Pdf

The first section of [this] book discusses classical themes, such as pawn majorities, the centre and structural weaknesses. Watson then moves on to discuss new concepts, including the willingness of modern players to accept backward pawns in return for dynamic play, the idea of a good 'bad' bishop, knights finding useful roles at the edge of the board, and the exchange of sacrifice ideas that became prevalent with the post-war Soviet world champions. ..." --

Under the Surface by Jan Markos Pdf

The most significant difference between a grandmaster and a club player is not simply that the grandmaster calculates more accurately, but rather that he sees more deeply. This book invites you beneath the surface, where you can learn to navigate the depths of chess. Jan Markos shows how a strong player perceives chess, which features of a position he focuses on, and how he thinks at the board. The author's philosophy is that understanding chess brings pure happiness, and he would like to share this happiness with you. "In his new book, GM Jan Markos focuses on important, yet often neglected, aspects of chess. He deals with this interesting and difficult topic excellently, making fine use of his chess and teaching abilities. The book is highly readable and belongs among the best chess books I have read in recent years. Although the book is intended to be read by amateurs, even grandmasters will find it interesting and useful. If you want to learn more about chess and don't mind thinking independently, this is the book for you." GM David Navara

Chess the Easy Way by Reuben Fine Pdf

This is the book most recommended by chess coaches for their students. It can perhaps be said that there are primarily four kinds of chess books. 1. Beginner's Books 2. Advance Strategy Books 3. Opening Books 4. Books of Historical Interest What makes "Chess the Easy Way" almost unique is that it spans the first two and touches on the third. It can be said that this book starts off the player at the beginning level and rapidly accelerates, reaching almost the expert level by the end. As a re-printer of out-of-print chess books, I have been absolutely bombarded by chess coaches with requests for a reprinting of this book. I get not only more requests for this book than any other book, but I get more requests for this book than ALL OTHER CHESS BOOKS COMBINED.

Reti's Best Games of Chess by Richard Reti,Harry Golombek Pdf

Richard Réti (1889-1929) was both a master player and a superb endgame composer. He was also a prominent member of the hyper-modern school and author of two of the greatest chess books ever written, Masters of the Chessboard and Modern Ideas in Chess. His games, which greatly influenced chess strat-egy, are known for their many innovations, beautifully developed combinations, and important advances in opening play and strategy. There are 70 games in this book, selected from all stages of Réti's career. Early games show the budding of Réti's almost phenomenal positional skills and his rise to status of great master with first prize wins at Kaschau and the international tournament of Gothenburg, 1920. There are many games from the tournaments of 1922, during the development of the Réti and the English openings including Réti-Rubinstein 1923, Réti-Becker 1923, Réti - Bogolyubov 1924, and his stunning defeat of Capablanca in 1924. The games from 1925 to his premature death in 1929 show his further development and number among them many which made the chess world sit up and take notice. Fifteen of Réti's most interesting composed endgames are also included. There is a short memoir and expert annotation by Harry Golombek. For this edition Raymond Keene has written a new Introduction.

Ideas Behind the Modern Chess Openings by Gary Lane Pdf

This repertoire of easy-to-learn openings, based on Garry Kasparov's move 1 d4, offers openings with a modern twist. Each one has simple principles that allow White to play just about the same moves against the Grunfeld, King's Indian, and Nimzo-Indian Defense. There are also modern systems to repel the Dutch, Benoni, and even offbeat lines such as the Englund Gambit. Nothing is left out: the tricks and traps in the opening for both sides; the basic plan and strategy using entertaining games; and how to play the middlegame by following easy plans. Intermediate
