Hurricane Katrina, which struck New Orleans and surrounding areas in August 2005, ranks as one of the nation's most devastating natural disasters. Shortly after the storm, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers established a task force to assess the performance of the levees, floodwalls, and other structures comprising the area's hurricane protection system during Hurricane Katrina. This book provides an independent review of the task force's final draft report and identifies key lessons from the Katrina experience and their implications for future hurricane preparedness and planning in the region.

Critical Infrastructure Protection by L. Kruszka,M. Klósak,P. Muzolf Pdf

Recent decades have seen an increase in the number of terrorist attacks, necessitating the development of more efficient global security policies. One of the most important elements of this enhanced security is the protection of critical infrastructure. This book presents edited contributions from the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC) on Critical Infrastructure Protection - Best Practices and Innovative Methods of Protection, held in Agadir, Morocco, from 6 to 12 May 2018. The main objective of the course was to bring together specialists working in the area of protecting critical infrastructure in NATO Member and Partner countries to share their knowledge and expertise. One lecture block was dedicated to important legal aspects, as these differ from country to country. The other main topic areas included the structural design and protection of critical infrastructure, new materials and material analysis, and material and construction testing at elevated impact velocities via experiment and numerical simulation. New designs for critical infrastructure elements were also demonstrated. The course provided an ideal forum for speakers and participants from government, academia, and military bodies to exchange information and best practice, while at the same time creating links to foster further collaboration and the exchange of ideas about the protection of critical infrastructure, and the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of terrorist attack.

Critical Energy Infrastructure Protection by L. Kruszka,D.E. Tria,P. Muzolf Pdf

Damage to critical energy infrastructure as a result of terrorism, criminal activity or natural disaster can have a significant impact at both a national and international level. Reducing the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to protect populations is therefore a high priority for governments worldwide, and high-quality training courses and advanced technologies are imperative in this regard. This book presents edited contributions from the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC) entitled ‘Critical Energy Infrastructure Protection: Innovative Structures and Materials for Blast and Ballistic Protection’, held as a virtual event from 22 - 25 March 2021. The principal aim of the course was to gather specialists from NATO member and partner countries interested in protecting their critical infrastructure against terrorist attacks, and to share research and practical experience in this field. The meeting provided a forum for participants and speakers to disseminate their recent work, and also served to promote the exchange of ideas and international cooperation among scientists and engineers. The focus was on the physical protection of critical infrastructure in the face of certain types of intentional threat or accident, such as explosions, impacts and blast waves, and the experts shared their experience on topics including the mitigation of risks, classification of vulnerabilities, improvement of resilience, advanced protective materials, dynamic testing of materials and structures, simulations, and numerical prediction methods. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of terrorist attacks.

Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact and Blast Loadings and Their Combinations by Chunwei Zhang,Gholamreza Gholipour Pdf

Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures by Serge Abrate,Bruno Castanié,Yapa D. S. Rajapakse Pdf

This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

Understanding the Tensile Properties of Concrete by Jaap Weerheijm Pdf

The response of concrete under tensile loading is crucial for most applications because concrete is much weaker in tension than in compression. Understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions is therefore key to understanding and using concrete in structural applications. Understanding the Tensile Properties of Concrete Second Edition summarises key recent research in this important subject area. After an introduction to concrete, the book is divided into two parts: part one on static response and part two on dynamic response. Part one starts with a summary chapter on the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete. Chapters show how multi scale modelling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties. Part two focuses on dynamic response and starts with an introduction to the different regimes of dynamic loading, ranging from the low frequency loading by wind or earthquakes up to the extreme dynamic conditions due to explosions and ballistic impacts. Following chapters review dynamic testing techniques and devices that deal with the various regimes of dynamic loading. Later chapters highlight the dynamic behaviour of concrete from different viewpoints, and the book ends with a chapter on practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications. Drawing on the work of some of the leading experts in the field, the book is fully updated and will be a valuable reference for civil and structural engineers as well as those researching this important material. Presents recent research in the areas of understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions Provides a summary of the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete and shows how multi scale modeling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties Highlights the dynamic behavior of concrete from different viewpoints and provides practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications Presents recent advancements in tensile strength determination under static and dynamic loading conditions for concrete structures Covers HSFRC and FRHSC Presents new work on non-local models and damage modeling, the dynamic increase factor for tensile strength, fracture energy and anchors, and slop stabilization
