Modification of Vestibular Responses as a Function of Rate of Rotation about an Earth-horizontal Axis by Manning J. Correia,Alfred R. Fregly Pdf

A study was made to compare nystagmic and subjective responses elicited at 10 RPM with responses elicited at 30 RPM when the axis of rotation was horizontal. When the same subjects were rotated about an Earth -horizontal axis at 10 and 30 RPM, the following differences in responses were noted: (1) Subjects who produced a unidirectional horizontal nystagmus throughout rotation at 10 RPM produced a reversing horizontal nystagmus after an interval (30 - 60 seconds) of rotation at 30 RPM. (2) Subjects, who gave veridical estimates of body orientation at 10 RPM, became disoriented at 30 RPM when nystagmus commenced reversing. At both 10 and 30 RPM a cyclic modulation of nystagmus was related to orientation relative to gravity. As in previous studies, sickness was produced by rotation about a horizontal axis, and a relationship between mental task and incidence of sickness was again noted. (Author).

Vestibular Function on Earth and in Space by J. Stahle Pdf

Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 15: Vestibular Function on Earth and in Space provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of vestibular research. This book discusses the problems concerned with space, with emphasis on the importance of the vestibular apparatus in space flight. Organized into 32 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the mechanisms and processes for creating the chemical composition of endolymph. This text then examines the speculative comparisons between prolonged exposure in a manne weightless space station and in a rotating space station. Other chapters consider the relationships between vestibular nystagmus and degradation of visual acuity when the vestibular stimuli interfere with voluntary efforts to see specific visual detail. This book discusses as well the concepts concerning the distribution of function between semicircular canals and otolith organs. The final chapter deals with the method for selective marking of neurons after axonal transection. This book is a valuable resource for otologists and scientists.

Vestibular System Part 2: Psychophysics, Applied Aspects and General Interpretations by H.H. Kornhuber Pdf

The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.

Sensory Integration by R. Masterton Pdf

The principal goal of the Handbook of Behavioral Neurobiology is a systematic, critical, and timely exposition of those aspects of neuroscience that have direct and immediate bearing on overt behavior. In this first volume, subtitled "Sensory Integration," the subject matter has been subdivided and the authors selected with this particular goal in mind. Although the early chapters (on the phylogeny and ontogeny of sensory systems, and on the common properties of sensory systems) are somewhat too abstract to permit many direct behavioral inferences, the focus on behavior has been maintained there too as closely as is now possible. A behavioral orientation is most obvious in the remaining chapters, which layout for each sensory modality in turn what is now known about structure-behavior relationships. The handbook is primarily intended to serve as a ready reference for two types of readers: first, practicing neuroscientists looking for a concise and authori tative treatment of developments outside of their particular specialities; and second, students of one or another branch of neuroscience who need an overview of the persistent questions and current problems surrounding the relation of the perceptual systems to behavior. The requirements imposed by the decision to address these particular audiences are reflected in the scope and style of the chapters as well as in their content.

Tutorials on Motion Perception by Alexander H. Wertheim Pdf

From August 24-29, 1980 the international "Symposium on the Study of Motion Perception; Recent Developments and Applications", sponsored by NATO and organized by the editors of this book, was held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. The meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics "Acta Psychologica" (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source.

Off-vertical Rotation: a Convenient Precise Means of Exposing the Passive Human Subject to a Rotating Linear Acceleration Vector by Ashton Graybiel,Earl F. Miller (II.) Pdf

A rotating chair modified to permit tilting of a subject up to 20 degrees from the upright was used to expose 100 normal men to an unusual vestibular stimulus, eliciting manifestations including the clinical picture of motion sickness. Through stepwise increases in angular velocity of the chair, subjects were rotated at 10 degrees tilt until they experienced mild motion sickness (a predetermined endpoint) or until a terminal velocity of 25 rpm was reached. Eighty-eight men reached the predetermined endpoint; seven additional men reached it only when the tilt angle was increased to 20 degrees; the remaining five men were shown to be highly insusceptible. The accuracy and flexibility of the method should prove to be useful in ranking persons according to their susceptibility to motion sickness and in studying the symptomatology, including the underlying central nervous system mechanisms. Two Devices for Analysis of Nystagmus by Fred E. Guedry (Jr.) Pdf

Two devices are described which facilitate measurement and analysis of nystagmus. One device requires manual alignment of a crosshair with the nystagmus slope. This process is much faster than unaided manual scoring because (1) the mechanical aid in slope measurement is very effective, (2) time measurement is virtually automatic, and (3) all steps after the crosshair alignment, including tabulation of digital information and plotting of analog information, are accomplished automatically. The second device is a standard recorder with plug-in units for area-summation and timed switching. It is less versatile than the first device, and is not equivalent to advanced electronic computation, but it does provide an immediate analog display and (with a digital voltmeter-printer) an immediate digital display of analyzed nystagmus. Additional operations performed on the output of these devices can provide estimates of the pi/delta time constant and other parameters. Topics discussed include sources of error in rapid processing of nystagmus and advantages of rapid processing for experimental purposes, for pilot evaluation, and for clinical application. (Author).
