Number Theory and Modular Forms by Bruce C. Berndt,Ken Ono Pdf

Robert A. Rankin, one of the world's foremost authorities on modular forms and a founding editor of The Ramanujan Journal, died on January 27, 2001, at the age of 85. Rankin had broad interests and contributed fundamental papers in a wide variety of areas within number theory, geometry, analysis, and algebra. To commemorate Rankin's life and work, the editors have collected together 25 papers by several eminent mathematicians reflecting Rankin's extensive range of interests within number theory. Many of these papers reflect Rankin's primary focus in modular forms. It is the editors' fervent hope that mathematicians will be stimulated by these papers and gain a greater appreciation for Rankin's contributions to mathematics. This volume would be an inspiration to students and researchers in the areas of number theory and modular forms.

Topics in Number Theory by Minking Eie Pdf

This is a first-ever textbook written in English about the theory of modular forms and Jacobi forms of several variables. It contains the classical theory as well as a new theory on Jacobi forms over Cayley numbers developed by the author from 1990 to 2000. Applications to the classical Euler sums are of special interest to those who are eager to evaluate double Euler sums or more general multiple zeta values. The celebrated sum formula proved by Granville in 1997 is generalized to a more general form here.

The 1-2-3 of Modular Forms by Jan Hendrik Bruinier,Gerard van der Geer,Günter Harder,Don Zagier Pdf

This book grew out of three series of lectures given at the summer school on "Modular Forms and their Applications" at the Sophus Lie Conference Center in Nordfjordeid in June 2004. The first series treats the classical one-variable theory of elliptic modular forms. The second series presents the theory of Hilbert modular forms in two variables and Hilbert modular surfaces. The third series gives an introduction to Siegel modular forms and discusses a conjecture by Harder. It also contains Harder's original manuscript with the conjecture. Each part treats a number of beautiful applications.

Number Theory with Applications by W C Winnie Li Pdf

Novel and important applications of number theory to graph theory and vice versa had been made in the past decade. The two main tools used are based on the estimates of character sums and the estimates of the eigenvalues of Hecke operators, both are rooted in the celebrated Weil conjectures settled by Deligne in 1973. The purpose of this book is to give, from scratch, a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the topics in number theory related to the central tools, with the ultimate goal of presenting their applications. This book includes many important subjects in number theory, such as Weil conjectures, Riemann-Roch theorem, L-functions, character sum estimates, modular forms, and representation theory. A First Course in Modular Forms by Fred Diamond,Jerry Shurman Pdf

This book introduces the theory of modular forms, from which all rational elliptic curves arise, with an eye toward the Modularity Theorem. Discussion covers elliptic curves as complex tori and as algebraic curves; modular curves as Riemann surfaces and as algebraic curves; Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner theory; Hecke eigenforms and their arithmetic properties; the Jacobians of modular curves and the Abelian varieties associated to Hecke eigenforms. As it presents these ideas, the book states the Modularity Theorem in various forms, relating them to each other and touching on their applications to number theory. The authors assume no background in algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry. Exercises are included.

Modular Functions in Analytic Number Theory by Marvin Isadore Knopp Pdf

Knopp's engaging book presents an introduction to modular functions in number theory by concentrating on two modular functions, $\eta(\tau)$ and $\vartheta(\tau)$, and their applications to two number-theoretic functions, $p(n)$ and $r_s(n)$. They are well chosen, as at the heart of these particular applications to the treatment of these specific number-theoretic functions lies the general theory of automorphic functions, a theory of far-reaching significance with important connections to a great many fields of mathematics. The book is essentially self-contained, assuming only a good first-year course in analysis. The excellent exposition presents the beautiful interplay between modular forms and number theory, making the book an excellent introduction to analytic number theory for a beginning graduate student. Elliptic Curves, Modular Forms, and Their L-functions by Alvaro Lozano-Robledo Pdf

Many problems in number theory have simple statements, but their solutions require a deep understanding of algebra, algebraic geometry, complex analysis, group representations, or a combination of all four. The original simply stated problem can be obscured in the depth of the theory developed to understand it. This book is an introduction to some of these problems, and an overview of the theories used nowadays to attack them, presented so that the number theory is always at the forefront of the discussion. Lozano-Robledo gives an introductory survey of elliptic curves, modular forms, and $L$-functions. His main goal is to provide the reader with the big picture of the surprising connections among these three families of mathematical objects and their meaning for number theory. As a case in point, Lozano-Robledo explains the modularity theorem and its famous consequence, Fermat's Last Theorem. He also discusses the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture and other modern conjectures. The book begins with some motivating problems and includes numerous concrete examples throughout the text, often involving actual numbers, such as 3, 4, 5, $\frac{3344161}{747348}$, and $\frac{2244035177043369699245575130906674863160948472041} {8912332268928859588025535178967163570016480830}$. The theories of elliptic curves, modular forms, and $L$-functions are too vast to be covered in a single volume, and their proofs are outside the scope of the undergraduate curriculum. However, the primary objects of study, the statements of the main theorems, and their corollaries are within the grasp of advanced undergraduates. This book concentrates on motivating the definitions, explaining the statements of the theorems and conjectures, making connections, and providing lots of examples, rather than dwelling on the hard proofs. The book succeeds if, after reading the text, students feel compelled to study elliptic curves and modular forms in all their glory.

Modular Functions and Dirichlet Series in Number Theory by Tom M. Apostol Pdf

This is the second volume of a 2-volume textbook* which evolved from a course (Mathematics 160) offered at the California Institute of Technology du ring the last 25 years. The second volume presupposes a background in number theory com parable to that provided in the first volume, together with a knowledge of the basic concepts of complex analysis. Most of the present volume is devoted to elliptic functions and modular functions with some of their number-theoretic applications. Among the major topics treated are Rademacher's convergent series for the partition function, Lehner's congruences for the Fourier coefficients of the modular functionj( r), and Hecke's theory of entire forms with multiplicative Fourier coefficients. The last chapter gives an account of Bohr's theory of equivalence of general Dirichlet series. Both volumes of this work emphasize classical aspects of a subject wh ich in recent years has undergone a great deal of modern development. It is hoped that these volumes will help the nonspecialist become acquainted with an important and fascinating part of mathematics and, at the same time, will provide some of the background that belongs to the repertory of every specialist in the field. This volume, like the first, is dedicated to the students who have taken this course and have gone on to make notable contributions to number theory and other parts of mathematics. T. M. A. January, 1976 * The first volume is in the Springer-Verlag series Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics under the title Introduction to Analytic Number Theory.

Some Applications of Modular Forms by Peter Sarnak Pdf

The theory of modular forms and especially the so-called 'Ramanujan Conjectures' have been applied to resolve problems in combinatorics, computer science, analysis and number theory. This tract, based on the Wittemore Lectures given at Yale University, is concerned with describing some of these applications. In order to keep the presentation reasonably self-contained, Professor Sarnak begins by developing the necessary background material in modular forms. He then considers the solution of three problems: the Ruziewicz problem concerning finitely additive rotationally invariant measures on the sphere; the explicit construction of highly connected but sparse graphs: 'expander graphs' and 'Ramanujan graphs'; and the Linnik problem concerning the distribution of integers that represent a given large integer as a sum of three squares. These applications are carried out in detail. The book therefore should be accessible to a wide audience of graduate students and researchers in mathematics and computer science.
