The Color of Love by Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman Pdf

The Color Of Love reveals the power of racial hierarchies to infiltrate our most intimate relationships. Delving far deeper than previous sociologists have into the black Brazilian experience, Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman examines the relationship between racialization and the emotional life of a family. Based on interviews and a sixteen-month ethnography of ten working-class Brazilian families, this provocative work sheds light on how families simultaneously resist and reproduce racial hierarchies. Examining race and gender, Hordge-Freeman illustrates the privileges of whiteness by revealing how those with “blacker” features often experience material and emotional hardships. From parental ties, to sibling interactions, to extended family and romantic relationships, the chapters chart new territory by revealing the connection between proximity to whiteness and the distribution of affection within families. Hordge-Freeman also explores how black Brazilian families, particularly mothers, rely on diverse strategies that reproduce, negotiate, and resist racism. She frames efforts to modify racial features as sometimes reflecting internalized racism, and at other times as responding to material and emotional considerations. Contextualizing their strategies within broader narratives of the African diaspora, she examines how Salvador’s inhabitants perceive the history of the slave trade itself in a city that is referred to as the “blackest” in Brazil. She argues that racial hierarchies may orchestrate family relationships in ways that reflect and reproduce racial inequality, but black Brazilian families actively negotiate these hierarchies to assert their citizenship and humanity.

What Color Is the Sky? by Michael Siems Pdf

As an experienced globetrotter on August 28, 2009, Michael Siems set out to teach English in China. He was open to new adventure but unknowingly ill-prepared for the often shocking journey that lay ahead. "What Color Is the Sky?" is a humorous paen to the author's stumbling through the misunderstandings and events that occur when two strikingly dissimilar cultures meet. Not just 'lost in translation, ' but lost in the pantomime that life becomes when there is no shared language in the midst of strikingly different worldviews. The book is a portrait of real life in China, where the sky is white and the moon and stars are rarely seen. Among the dizzying pace of development, the angst created by the modern world impacting a centuries old traditional culture, and the beauty of this ancient land, the work relates the love affair that he develops with his students, who graciously, lovingly, and humorously grant him a window to the Chinese heart and mind.

You ... A Philosophizing Human by Will C Thomas Jr Pdf

The idea behind the book is to inspire people and especially my family to read and to write. Somehow I started reading comic books between the ages of three and four. And not really knowing how that happened. U continued to read various books even with several nieces and nephews hanging all over me (those that lived with us). I remember reading in elementary school "There is no frigate like a book to take you miles and miles away" somewhere on the reading tests, my mother and father were told in elementary that I read at a twelfth grade level. Read in a neighborhood that stressed playing outdoors brought some pointed finger at a boy who was sitting on the porch reading in the summer while his peers passed by to go play some game. Yet it helped him pick up many philosophies along the way. Certainly I struggled to write sentences that did not always begin with I. I did so because I believed that one's thoughts could be put on paper. So what you read here are some of my thoughts and philosophies that have been with me over many years.

The Last Seven Years by C.A. Hill Pdf

With boundless energy and bubbly personality, author C.A. Hill’s mother stayed active with her friends and activities. It was a joy to see her live each day to the fullest with such a positive attitude. But the time came when her mother--always full of zest--began to change. Hill could no longer deny or ignore the signs. It was evident her mother wasn’t thinking rationally and could no longer make the right decisions for herself. In The Last Seven Years, Hill chronicles her firsthand experiences as she took the role of caregiver and responsible party and witnessed her mother’s transition from an independent, effervescent woman to an empty shell of her former self. Spanning the last seven years of her mother’s decline, this memoir offers an accurate account of the stages encountered through the aging process. Though it reads somewhat like a novel, this story presents a true documentation of how physical and mental behaviors changed the course of Hill’s mother’s life. The Last Seven Years points out how menacing the physical changes and behaviors can be for an aging parent. This narrative provides a unique perspective on how to get through the rough times and still keep your parent happy, healthy, comfortable, and safe.
