Money and the Monetary System (Classic Reprint) by George E. Roberts Pdf

Excerpt from Money and the Monetary System Barter has very Obvious economic limita tions. Consider, for instance, the plight Of the shoemaker under such a system. He can have meat for his dinner only when he can find a butcher who will exchange meat directly for shoes. If he needs pins, he can buy them only in lots Of thousands, because he cannot subdivide a pair Of shoes. He cannot readily produce his goods in quantity, because the more he produces the larger will be his mar keting problems. In fact, a man can scarcely become exclusively a shoemaker in a com munity which makes no use of money, nor can there be any other sort Of specialist. The World's Money by J. Meyer Pdf

Excerpt from The World's Money: Theory of the Coin, Coinage, and Monetary System of the World The etymon of the word money, as kindly furnished me by Prof. J. M. Leonard, Ph. D., of the chair of Greek and comparative philology in the University of Missouri, is a most appropriate introduction to these pages, as it shows at once the high antiquity of the term as well as the dignity of its origin; and while it hints at its importance in national economy, it clearly implies the duty of governments to place its control, no less than the perfecting of its nature, in the hands of their purest and most philosophical statesmen. Money and the Mechanism of Exchange (Classic Reprint) by William Stanley Jevons Pdf

Excerpt from Money and the Mechanism of Exchange IN preparing this volume, I have attempted to write a descriptive essay on the past and present monetary systems of the world, the materials employed to make money, the regulations under which the coins are struck and issued, the natural laws which govern their circula tion, the several modes in which they may be replaced by the use of paper documents, and finally, the method in which the use of money is immensely economized by the cheque and clearing system now being extended and perfected. Money and Foreign Exchange After 1914 (Classic Reprint) by Gustav Cassel Pdf

Excerpt from Money and Foreign Exchange After 1914 IN this book I have aimed at presenting a coherent account of the fortunes of the world's monetary system from the outbreak of the War up to the present time. In my two Memoranda to the League of Nations I endeavoured to give an analysis of the world's monetary problem, as it presented itself at the time when the Brussels Conference was being arranged, and one year later. Those Memoranda, however, are written for a narrow circle of experts, and are therefore in a somewhat concentrated form. To suit a wider public a broader representation of the problem is desirable, and it is particularly desirable that greater attention be paid to the course of events that has led up to the situation in the face of which the task of restbring a sound monetary system has now to be taken up. For all future time the period through which we are now living will come to form one of the most important chapters in monetary history, and it will likewise offer the richest materials on which to draw for studying the question of the effects of a misguided monetary policy. A book of the character suggested thus undoubtedly has a task to fulfil. Only the task is of such dimensions that one's powers will. The Elements of Public Finance by Winthrop More Daniels Pdf

Excerpt from The Elements of Public Finance: Including the Monetary System of the United States The present volume owes Its origin to the want the author experienced in finding a suitable text for his classes. Such treatises as were at hand proved unsuitable for one or the other of two very different reasons. Either their treatment of financial theory was too detailed, or the scope they allowed to public finance was too narrow to include certain subjects - such as our currency system - which I thought fit to discuss in a somewhat practical manual. Money and Banking (Classic Reprint) by John Thom Holdsworth Pdf

Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Currency Problem and the Present Financial Situation by Edwin Robert Anderson Seligman Pdf

Excerpt from The Currency Problem and the Present Financial Situation: A Series of Addresses Delivered at Columbia University, 1907-1908 The occasion of the addresses collected in this volume was a desire to contribute to the understanding of the crisis of 1907, and to lay down some principles which might be of service in the reconstruction of our currency system. The first question, however, that will Obviously present itself, is as to whether the crisis of 1907 was primarily a financial or an industrial crisis; and it may be well, before taking up the specific problems raised by the addresses, to consider this question a little more closely. From one point of view, indeed, every economic crisis is a financial crisis. For since values are expressed in terms of money, and Since the modern business super structure is erected on the basis of credit, every economic revulsion expresses itself through the medium of a change in prices; and since the bank is the center of credit Operations, every crisis inevitably involves a revolution in the conditions Of credit. From this point of View, all crises may be declared to be financial crises. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Money and Currency in Relation to Industry, Prices, and the Rate of Interest (Classic Reprint) by Joseph French Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from Money and Currency in Relation to Industry, Prices, and the Rate of Interest The theory of money and credit is developed in the first four chapters. All the remaining chapters are illustrative of the theory. In order that the illustrations may be in harmony with actual conditions, the forces governing the ebb and flow of currency and gold are described in Chapter V.' Chapters VI, VII, and VIII Show how important is the relation which money and credit, through the medium of price and the rate of interest, bear to industry and the general welfare of society. The use of gold and silver as money is considered in the next four chapters, the issues raised in the long debate over bimetallism and the free coinage of silver being reviewed in order that the principles at stake may be brought to light. Fiat money constitutes the important subject of Chapters XIII and XIV, the author's theory and conclusions being reenforced by facts from the experience of several countries. Credit money, which is not money at all, but a form of credit possessing general accept ability, is treated in Chapter XV. The need for an elastic element in the currency a need that can be satisfied only by credit money is here considered. The last two chapters deal with the monetary experience of the United States. Here, as elsewhere, principles are made more conspicuous than the facts of coinage and legislation, it being manifestly more important to know why silver dollars are valuable than to know how many of them have been coined. Money and Banking by Horace White Pdf

Excerpt from Money and Banking: Illustrated by American History Very few persons, if any, are satisfied with our present monetary condition. While I write these lines a withdrawal of $2, 3 gold from the Treasury causes a fresh tremor and confusion of tongues. Everybody assures everybody else, and tries to assure himself, that it is of no consequence. Probably no harm will come of it, but why should it be noticed at all, except by a few dealers in foreign exchange? Because the public Treasury undertakes to maintain the ultimate gold reserve of the country, and because people doubt whether it can do so at all times. Are these doubts unreasonable? The only law on the statute book really effective for the discharge of this obligation was passed in 1862 for a different emergency, had been forgotten a quar ter of a century, and was discovered by accident the last day in the afternoon. As regards the act of 187 5 (under which gold was twice procured last year for the replenish ment of the Treasury) it is a matter of dispute whether it is still in force, or whether it lapsed when specie payments were resumed. A dispute on such a question is itself an incentive to panic. Moreover, everything depends upon the mood and temper of the Administration for the time being whether such powers as the law confers shall be exercised wisely and promptly, or exercised at all.
