Mortimer and the Witches by Marie Carter Pdf

The neglected histories of 19th-century NYC’s maligned working-class fortune tellers and the man who set out to discredit them Under the pseudonym Q. K. Philander Doesticks, P. B., humor writer Mortimer Thomson went undercover to investigate and report on the fortune tellers of New York City’s tenements and slums. When his articles were published in book form in 1858, they catalyzed a series of arrests that both scandalized and delighted the public. But Mortimer was guarding some secrets of his own, and in many ways, his own life paralleled the lives of the women he both visited and vilified. In Mortimer and the Witches, author Marie Carter examines the lives of these marginalized fortune tellers while also detailing Mortimer Thomson’s peculiar and complicated biography. Living primarily in the poor section of the Lower East Side, nineteenth-century fortune tellers offered their clients answers to all questions in astrology, love, and law matters. They promised to cure ailments. They spoke of loved ones from beyond the grave. Yet Doesticks saw them as the worst of the worst evil-doers. His investigative reporting aimed to stop unsuspecting young women from seeking the corrupt soothsaying advice of these so-called clairvoyants and to expose the absurd and woefully inaccurate predictions of these “witches.” Marie Carter views these stories of working-class, immigrant women with more depth than Doesticks’s mocking articles would allow. In her analysis and discussion, she presents them as three-dimensional figures rather than the caricatures Doesticks made them out to be. What other professions at that time allowed women the kind of autonomy afforded by fortune-telling? Their eager customers, many of whom were newly arrived immigrants trying to navigate life in a new country, weren’t as naive and gullible as Doesticks made them out to be. They were often in need of guidance, seeking out the advice of someone who had life experience to offer or simply enjoying the entertainment and attention. Mortimer and the Witches offers new insight into the neglected histories of working-class fortune tellers and the creative ways that they tried to make a living when options were limited for them.

American Witches by Susan Fair Pdf

The history of American witches is way weirder than you ever imagined. From bewitched pigs hell-bent on revenge to gruesome twentieth-century murders, American Witches reveals strange incidents of witchcraft that have long been swept under the rug as bizarre sidenotes to history. On a tour through history that’s both whimsical and startling, we’ll encounter seventeenth-century children flying around inside their New England home “like geese.” We’ll meet a father-son team of pious Puritans who embarked on a mission that involved undressing ladies and overseeing hangings. And on the eve of the Civil War, we’ll accompany a reporter as he dons a dress and goes searching for witches in New York City’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Entertainingly readable and rich in amazing details often left out of today’s texts, American Witches casts a flickering torchlight into the dark corners of American history.

The Big Book of Oregon Ghost Stories by Janice Oberding Pdf

As the dense coastal fog rolls in to blanket the shoreline in gloomy silence, one thing becomes very clear. Oregon is a state in which ghosts roam. Not only here on the coast but in the lush green inland regions as well. Oregon is the ninth largest state in the US, and is one of contrasts. From the fertile Willamette Valley with its hundreds of wineries to its rugged coastline; from its twenty-two feet tall Pioneer statue, known affectionately as Gold Man, sitting atop the state capital in Salem to its ghost towns, Oregon is a state of stark beauty, hauntings, and history. Ghosts linger for any number of reasons. Those who’ve stayed in Oregon range from millionaires who refuse to move from their mansions, lonely cemetery inhabitants, those attached to local theaters, saloons and hotels to ladies of the evening who made the wrong life and death decisions. Their reasons for staying put are as varied as there are rose bushes in the state.

Malleus Maleficarum: Hammer of the Witches by Heinrich Kramer Pdf

A manual of demonology and witchcraft from medieval Europe, the Malleus Maleficarum is an infamous treatise defining methods for identifying, interrogating, and executing supposed witches. 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.' (Exodus 22:18 KJV) First written and published in 1486 by German Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer, this treatise was republished with additions from a second author, Jacob Sprenger, in 1519. Used to persecute supposed practisers of witchcraft during the witch hunts of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Malleus Maleficarum is a haunting reminder of the deep-seated paranoia and religious fervour that led to the torture and deaths of many innocent people. One of history's most infamous texts, this handbook struck fear into the hearts of many and fuelled the flames of hysteria surrounding ideas of heresy, witchcraft, and the occult during the Middle Ages. This is the 1928 edition translated by the English occultist Montague Summers and featuring his original introduction.

Summary of Ian Mortimer's The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England by Everest Media, Pdf

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Different societies see landscapes differently. For example, an Elizabethan traveler would describe his homeland in terms of cities, towns, ports, great houses, bridges and roads. A contemporary description will mention overcrowding and the problems of population expansion. #2 The Elizabethan landscape is different from the landscape that you see today. It is vast and open, with small houses and fields, and it was not until the late 1590s that people started to use the term landscape to describe a view. #3 Stratford-upon-Avon is located in the heart of England, about ninety-four miles north-west of London. The town was planned in the twelfth century, and most of the buildings are medieval. The most prestigious house in the town is New Place, built by Sir Hugh Clopton. #4 The town of Stratford was planned in the Middle Ages, and has wide streets that allow plenty of light to enter the front parlours and workshops of the market traders.
