The Magic Mountains by Dane Kennedy Pdf

Perched among peaks that loom over heat-shimmering plains, hill stations remain among the most curious monuments to the British colonial presence in India. In this engaging and meticulously researched study, Dane Kennedy explores the development and history of the hill stations of the raj. He shows that these cloud-enshrouded havens were sites of both refuge and surveillance for British expatriates: sanctuaries from the harsh climate as well as an alien culture; artificial environments where colonial rulers could nurture, educate, and reproduce themselves; commanding heights from which orders could be issued with an Olympian authority. Kennedy charts the symbolic and sociopolitical functions of the hill stations over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, arguing that these highland communities became much more significant to the British colonial government than mere places for rest and play. Particularly after the revolt of 1857, they became headquarters for colonial political and military authorities. In addition, the hill stations provided employment to countless Indians who worked as porters, merchants, government clerks, domestics, and carpenters. The isolation of British authorities at the hill stations reflected the paradoxical character of the British raj itself, Kennedy argues. While attempting to control its subjects, it remained aloof from Indian society. Ironically, as more Indians were drawn to these mountain areas for work, and later for vacation, the carefully guarded boundaries between the British and their subjects eroded. Kennedy argues that after the turn of the century, the hill stations were increasingly incorporated into the landscape of Indian social and cultural life. Motley Stones by Adalbert Stifter Pdf

The first complete English translation of the nineteenth-century Austrian innovator's evocative, elemental cycle of novellas. For Kafka he was “my fat brother”; Thomas Mann called him “one of the most peculiar, enigmatic, secretly audacious and strangely gripping storytellers in world literature.” Often misunderstood as an idyllic poet of “beetles and buttercups,” the nineteenth-century Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter can now be seen as a radical experimenter with narrative and a forerunner of nature writing’s darker currents. One of his best-known works, the novella cycle Motley Stones now appears in its first complete English translation, a rendition that respects the bracing strangeness of the original. In six thematically linked novellas, including the beloved classic “Rock Crystal,” human dramas play out amid the natural cycles of the Alps or the urban rhythms of Vienna—environments so keenly observed that they emerge as the tales’ most indomitable protagonists. Stifter’s human characters are equally haunting—children braving perils, eccentrics and loners harboring enigmatic torments. “We seek to glimpse the gentle law that guides the human race,” Stifter famously wrote. What he glimpsed, more often than not, was the abyss that lies behind the idyll. The tension between his humane sensitivity and his dark visions is what lends his writing its heartbreaking power.

Crazy, unreal experiences await her: from her car breaking down short of her destination, to the horse and buggy ride to the Dorwalls hillbilly home where she meets Burt, their city cousin, to her aunt, whom she fears is dead and her ram shackled cold house without electricity, water, heat, or food. The Twins in the Mountains by K.C. Nuzum Pdf

Never were there two destined for such a horrible fate. Four years have passed since the Child, Tane, and Care escaped the clutches of the Order of Garatos, and the world as they’ve known it is long gone. The Mountains of the Predicated, their new home, has been their safe haven with Mistacles, the Great Imagi as their guardian, but strange happenings and talk of legions of soldiers heading up the mountain side have all those who live there nervous. Pul, survivor of the hands of the Order, has made a name for himself as potential Prophezier but faces adversaries even among those he trusts most. And Munta, who has stood true and fair by his side, has been forced into war, becoming like those whom he despises most even at the breaking of his heart. Unexpected reunions. Terrifying revelations. All play a part in this sequel to the novel, “The Child of Venlet,” where nothing is as it seems. There are those who wish to harm the children, and those who wish to protect them. But who can they trust in a world full of lies? “She is not ours to take—not yet, anyways. But retribution is ours to give. And I am eager to give.”
