Murder in the “G” Basketball League by Richard Murphy Pdf

This is a ‘Who-dun-it’ novel about a murder of a member of the Portland, Maine Flounders organization, a minor league basketball team, affiliated with Boston’s major league team, the Shamrocks. The Flounders were an eclectic ensemble of U.S. and foreign players, young and old, black and white, urban and city, ex-college and ex-high-school players. The reader will be treated to a modicum of basketball strategies, enough to understand the teams’ journey to the “G” League national championship, but will not be pulled into the weeds of basketball. The coach, Butch Baker, a farm boy who entered the Marines after graduating from Annapolis got shot in the arm from a Taliban sniper and upon recovery played several years for the Boston Shamrocks. The tension between the team and coach is gripping as the cultures and backgrounds clash. The coach does not understand the Woke culture and is oblivious to the triggering he causes with some of his draconian remarks and actions. The reader, teased by the title, knows a murder will happen but gets sidetracked by the personal interaction between players with players and the coach with players. The reader is attached to the wily coach, but knows his imperfections and awaits a foul play. Suspense continues in the book until late in the game when the culprit is finally revealed.

The Strange Death of Moral Britain by Christie Davies Pdf

In the last half of the twentieth century, a once respectable and religious Britain became a seriously violent and dishonest society, one in which person and property were at risk, family breakdown was ubiquitous, and drug and alcohol abuse was rising. The Strange Death of Moral Britain demonstrates in detail the roots of Britain's decline. It also shows how a society, strongly Protestant in both morality and identity, became one of the most secular societies in the world. The culture wars about abortion, capital punishment, and homosexuality, which have convulsed the United States, have little meaning in Britain where there is neither a moral majority nor any indigenous emphasis on rights. In the period when Britain had a strong national and religious identity, defense of this identity led to legal persecution of male homosexuals. As Britain's identity crumbled, homosexuality ceased to be an important issue for most people. Similarly, all the pressing questions on abortion, capital punishment, and homosexuality were settled permanently on a purely utilitarian basis in Britain, where all sources of moral argument are weak. The ending of the death penalty marked the decline of the influence of the official hierarchies of church and state, the Church of England, the armed forces, and their representative, the Conservative Party. The Strange Death of Moral Britain is a study of moral change, secularization, loss of identity, and the growth of deviant behavior in Britain in the twentieth century. Based on detailed scholarship, it is tightly argued and clearly written with a minimum of jargon. It will be of interest to scholars in religious studies and British social history, and to a general reading public concerned with timely moral controversies.Christie Davies was for eighteen years a professor at the University of Reading, England, and has been a visiting lecturer in the United States and India. He is the author of several books including The Mirth of Nations, available from Transaction, and his articles have appeared in leading academic journals in sociology, criminology, social history and religious studies, among others.

Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases, 1934-1970 by Michael Newton Pdf

The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007 called for review and reinvestigation of "violations of criminal civil rights statutes that occurred not later than December 31, 1969, and resulted in a death." The U.S. Attorney General's review observed that date, while examining cases from 1936 (a date not specified in the Till Act) onward. In selecting violations for review, certain "headline" cases were included while others meeting the same criteria were not considered. This first full-length survey of American civil rights "cold cases" examines unsolved racially motivated murders over nearly four decades, beginning in 1934. The author covers all cases reviewed by the federal government to date, as well as a larger number of cases that were ignored without official explanation.
