Economic Investigations in Twentieth-Century Detective Fiction by Yan Zi-Ling Pdf

In his study of Golden Age and hard-boiled detective fiction from 1890 to 1950, Yan Zi-Ling argues that these two subgenres can be distinguished not only by theme and style, but by the way they structure knowledge, value, and productive labour. Using the detective as a reference point and enactor of socially based interests, Yan shows that Golden Age texts are distinguished by their conservationism (and not only by their conservatism), with the detectives’ actions serving to stabilize institutions with specific ideological aims. In contrast, the criminal investigations of the hard-boiled detective, who is poorly aligned with institutions and strong interest groups, reveal the fragility of the status quo in the face of escalating cycles of violence. Key to Yan’s discussion are theories of exchange, value, and the gift, the latter of which he suggests is more akin to detective work than is wage labour. Analyzing texts by a wide range of authors that includes Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Dorothy Sayers, Raoul Whitfield, George Harmon Coxe, and Mickey Spillane, Yan demonstrates that the detective’s truth-generating function, most often characterized as a process of discovery rather than creation, is in fact crucial to the institutional and class-based interests that he or she serves.

An Eliza Montagu Cozy Mystery Bundle: Murder at the Hedgerow (#1) and A Dollop of Death (#2) by Fiona Grace Pdf

A bundle of books #1 (MURDER AT THE HEDGEROW) and #2 (A DOLLOP OF DEATH) in Fiona Grace’s Eliza Montagu cozy mystery series. This bundle offers books one and two in one convenient file, with over 150,000 words of reading. For centuries, Thistlewood Manor has stood as home to the Montagu family, a beacon to British aristocracy in rural England. But it’s 1928, and in this new age of women’s rights, Eliza Montagu, 27, a free spirit, has turned her back on her family to live an artist’s life in London. In MURDER AT THE HEDGEROW (Book #1), when an unexpected family crisis arrives, Eliza has no choice but to return home to the demands of her family, to help her father, and to meet the Lord they hope she’ll marry. When a dead body appears in the midst of the reunion, Eliza quickly realizes that if she doesn’t solve the mystery, the crime may just be pinned on her, and dash her hopes for a life as a free woman. In A DOLLOP OF DEATH (Book #2), after Eliza is summoned home, she decides to stay (for now) to help her father run the ailing family business. The presence of her childhood best friend, Oliver, also gives her a reason to stay, as she wonders if their unfulfilled romance might ever come to fruition. Fall has arrived, bringing to town major Fall festivals and celebrations in the gorgeous countryside—and yet also bringing to town a female suitor who wastes no time trying to woo Oliver away. Seeing Eliza as her rival, the suitor does everything she can to malign her and make her life miserable. And when a servant turns up dead, poisoned by a slice of pie meant for Eliza, all eyes fall on the suitor. Did she mean to murder Eliza? Was the pie meant for someone else in the family? Or for the suitor herself? Eliza, realizing she is implicated, is forced to solve the perplexing murder—and ends up utterly stunned at what she discovers. Future books in the series are also available.

The Truth about Belle Gunness by Lillian de la Torre Pdf

Edgar Award Finalist: The true story of the female Norwegian immigrant who led a secret life as a serial killer in the early twentieth-century Midwest. On the morning of April 27, 1908, the farmhand on a lonely property outside La Porte, Indiana, woke to the smell of smoke. He tried to rouse the lady of the house, the towering Belle Poulsdatter Sorenson Gunness, and he called the names of her three children—but they didn’t answer, and the farmhand barely escaped alive. The house burned to the foundation, and in the rubble, firemen found the corpses of Belle, her two daughters, and her son. The discovery raised two chilling questions: Who started the fire, and who cut off Belle’s head? As investigators searched the property, they uncovered something astonishing: The remains of a dozen or more men and children who had been murdered with poison or cleaver were buried beneath the hog pen. It turned out Belle Gunness was one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. And when the investigation revealed that the body found in the fire might not have been hers, the people of La Porte were forced to confront the terrifying realization that Belle might have gotten out alive. Nominated for an Edgar Award for best factual crime story, The Truth about Belle Gunness is based on extensive interviews with witnesses and residents of La Porte who knew Belle and her family. Perfect for fans of In Cold Blood or The Devil in the White City, it is a “magnificent [and] brilliantly written” exploration of a highly unusual murderer (The New York Times).

The family consists of four childrenVeronica, Lisbeth, Mike, and Jimand Uncle Paul and his wife who own the largest peach farm in Peach Haven. Veronica is a student at the university and has been dating Neil, a handsome medical research student for six wonderful, glorious months. However, their relationship started to suffer. Neil started to show his true colors. He was a very jealous and possessive person. He started to continually abuse her. First by slapping her around, pulling her hair, then throwing her on the ground, and kicking and beating her. She loved him too much, so she made excuses for the beatings. Yet when she looked into his eyes, she saw that there was no warmth. They were eyes that only spoke of things Veronica refused to believe. Neil was raised in the house that was used as a family home as well as a research lab. His play as well as sex experiments were with the cadavers. One day, his mother found him having sex with a lovely cadaver. She told him the facts of life. His father was another thing. He took him to the red-light district. He showed him how to have fun then murder the victim. Then one day, he met and fell in love with a beautiful and talented young lady. He loved Veronica as only a young, talented, warped man could love. He continued to abuse her: broken jaw, broken arms, bruises, tortured, and yet there was a good show in public. Until one day, he went too far and admitted that he had murdered her folks for the insurance money and their property. Angry and hurt beyond reason, she attacked him, and a long and bloody fight ensued. Neil got the small gun from the night stand and shot Veronica. She somehow got the gun away from him and shot him dead. However, the body and gun was never found. Just a bloody left arm with Neils wedding ring was found in the bed with a badly wounded Veronica. Where is Neil?
