Musical Instruments of the Bible by Jeremy Montagu Pdf

For everyone who's read the Bible and wondered what David's harp, or Nebuchadnezzar's sackbut and cornett really were, Jeremy Montagu, retired curator of Oxford's Bate Collection of Historical Instruments, has composed an astoundingly thorough investigation and explanation of the musical instruments that pepper the pages of Western Civilization's most holy book. This is a detailed study of all the musical instruments mentioned in the Bible, using the resources of linguistics, organology, and ethnomusicology to identify and describe them. Every reference to an instrument is noted and all the misconceptions of translation are corrected. The Bible, as we know it in English, is a translation, and the history of biblical translations into Aramaic, Greek, Latin and other languages is one of guesswork. The substitution of the musical instruments from the translator's era for those of the original author is as common as it is overlooked. Jubal did not have an organ, nor David a harp. This book uses all the resources available to establish what each instrument really was, what it looked like, and how it was played and is arranged in the same order as the King James Bible, with explanation where this differs from other versions in English. As well as a full bibliography, there are three indexes. The first is of Biblical Citations so that readers may check every mention in the Bible from its chapter and verse. The second is a quadrilingual parallel citation in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and English, so that each reference can be crosschecked. The third is a general index. The four biblical languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin, are used to the full, and the original texts are cited frequently. There are 18 illustrations, some of which are archeological remains, some ethnographic parallels, and one is of the sole biblical instrument still in regular use: the ram's horn which brought down the walls of Jericho. Musical Instruments of the Bible is perfect for university theology and comparative religion depa

Musical Instruments of the Bible by Jeremy Montagu Pdf

Now a private museum curator in Oxford, England, Montagu began his study of Biblical instruments as an illustrated lecture to music clubs and societies over 30 years ago. That led to a series of articles for The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (1984), and that in turn to a handbook for a museum collection, and a larger self- published book. The arrangement is by Biblical section. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

A Compendium of Musical Instruments and Instrumental Terminology in the Bible by Yelena Kolyada Pdf

'A Compendium of Musical Instruments and Instrumental Terminology in the Bible' draws on extensive historical research, comparative linguistic analysis and musical study to offer the first compilation of its kind. The volume examines the entire range of musical instruments in the Bible - stringed, wind and percussion - drawing on ancient and modern translations of the Bible and the works of rabbinic teachers, Church Fathers and medieval, renaissance and contemporary scholars. The book offers a historical survey of Hebrew instrumental music - its origins and links with neighbouring cultures, the role of instruments in the religious, social, public and private life of ancient Israel, and the system of musical education - and explores the understanding of Hebrew musical instruments in post-biblical times. This comprehensive volume will be invaluable to musicologists, archaeologists, theologians, historians, philologists and Bible translators, as well as general readers in the subject.

Both examples are of the simplest construction. The material of which they are made (including the mouthpieces and tongues) is of river-reed, cut into lengths, which Fig-54 have to be inserted into each other before use. To prevent accidental loss, the separate parts are connected by common waxed cord. These instruments are called arghool, and have distinguishing titles, according to the length of the drone-tube. In Fig. 53 the inequality in the length of the two pipes is very apparent. Fig. 54 shows that they were sometimes used in Egyptian processions of a solemn character. In Fig. 55 is shown the capistrum, which Greeks and Romans wore to give support to muscles of the cheeks and face whilst blowing. In modem orchestras we are perfectly content with the quantity of tone produced from our tube-instruments without the assistance of these headbandages. An Assyrian is shown playing upon the double-flute in Fig. 56. It is much to be regretted that no details as to the construction of these instruments can be gleaned from the ancient bas-reliefs. No attempt seems to have been made to mark even the position of the holes. The use of the double-flute by nations with whom the Jews had constant intercourse having been shown, nothing more can be said. The reader must form his own opinion as to the probability of its being rightly enrolled amongst Hebrew musical instruments. The quality of tone produced by the reed-pipes was, ...

Music in Ancient Israel/Palestine by Joachim Braun Pdf

This book contains the first study of the musical culture of ancient Israel/Palestine based primarily on the archaeological record. Noted musicologist Joachim Braun explores the music of the Holy Land region of the Middle East, tracing its form and development from its beginning in the Stone Age to the fourth century A.D. This is not a study of music in the Bible or music in biblical times but a unique, in-depth investigation of the historical periods and cultures that influenced the music of the region and its people. Braun combines significant archaeological findings -- musical instruments, terra cotta and metal figures, etched stone illustrations, mosaics -- with evidence drawn from written (mainly biblical) texts and anthropological, sociological, and linguistic sources. The portrait Braun assembles of this past musical world is both fascinating and innovative, suggesting a reconsideration of many views long accepted by tradition. Enhanced with numerous illustrations and photographs that bring the archaeological evidence to life, this exceptional work will be a valued resource for scholars, students, and general readers interested in the history of music, biblical studies, Jewish studies, and the cultures of the ancient Near East.

The Music of the Bible by John Stainer Pdf

Excerpt from The Music of the Bible: With Some Account of the Development of Modern Instruments From Ancient Types No art is exercising such a strong influence over the human race at the present time as the art of Music. It has become so thoroughly a part of our existence that we rarely pause to consider to what an extent we are, as it were, enveloped in its sweet sounds, or how irremediable its loss would be to us. As a natural result of this, much interest has of late years been shown in every research which might tend to throw some light on its early history. The various musical instruments depicted in sculpture, or on coins, or some times luckily found in ancient tombs, have been carefully examined, with excellent results. Also, the broad*basis on which the study of History now stands, has allowed oppor tunities of comparing the music and musical instruments of ancient nations, and of classifying them into different families. It will be at once seen what important results must arise from this, for in company with customs, words, and even modes of thought, musical instruments may pass from one nation to another, whether their intercourse has been that of peaceful neighbours or of tyrannic foes. The Music of the Bible by John Stainer Pdf

Excerpt from The Music of the Bible: With Some Account of the Development of Modern Instruments From Ancient Types No apology is needed, I hope, for issuing in this form the substance of the series of articles which I contributed to the Bible Educator. Some of the statements which I brought forward in that work have received further confirmation by wider reading; but some others I have ventured to qualify or alter. Much new matter will be found here which I trust may be of interest to the general reader, if not of use to the professional. I fully anticipate a criticism to the effect that such a subject as the development of musical instruments should rather have been allowed to stand alone than have been associated with Bible music. But I think all will admit that the study of the history of ancient nations, whether with reference to their arts, religion, conquests, or language, seems to gather and be concentrated round the Book of Books, and when once I began to treat of the comparative history of musical instruments, I felt that a few more words, tracing their growth up to our own times, would make this little work more complete and useful than if I should deal only wdth the sparse records of Hebrew music.
