Musician in the Museum by Charles Fairchild Pdf

In recent years, popular music museums have been established in high profile locations in many of the presumed “musical capitals” of the world, such as Los Angeles, Liverpool, Seattle, Memphis, and Nashville. Most of these are defined by expansive experiential infrastructures centered around spectacular, high-tech displays of varying sizes and types. Through over-the-top acts of display, these museums influence and reflect the values and priorities in the public life of popular music. This book examines the phenomenon of the popular music museum outside the typical and familiar frames of heritage and tourism. Instead, it looks at these institutions as markers of the broader entertainment industry in the era of its rise to global dominance. It highlights the multiple manifestations of power as read across a range of institutions and material forms and discusses how this contributes to shaping the experience of popular culture.

Museums of Music by Kate Arnold-Forster,Hélène La Rue Pdf

Music plays a central role in the cultural history of our nation and in the lives of many individuals. This report deals with music as it is displayed and interpreted in museums in the United Kingdom. The authors consulted widely among experts in both the care and performance of music and also among those who provide musical education. They were encouraged by the diversity and originality in the musical collections found in our museums. But their survey also revealed chronic difficulties, such as shortage of specialist staffing and a lack of resources to provide proper care and modern and professional displays. The Review offers comments and recommendations as a basis for constructive change and improvement.

The Imaginary Museum of Musical Works : An Essay in the Philosophy of Music by Lydia Goehr Pdf

What is the difference between a performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and the symphony itself? What does it mean for musicians to be faithful to the works they perform? To answer such questions, Lydia Goehr combines philosophical and historical methods of enquiry. Finding Anglo-American philosophy inadequate for the task, she shows that a historical perspective is indispensable to a full understanding of musical ontology. Goehr examines the concepts and assumptions behind the practice of classical music in the nineteenth century and demonstrates how different they were from those of previous centuries. She rejects the finding that the concept of a musical work emerged in the sixteenth century, placing its emergence instead around 1800. She describes how the concept of a work then came to define the norms, expectations, and behaviour that we now associate with classical music. Out of the historical thesis Goehr draws philosophical conclusions about the normative functions of concepts and ideals. She also addresses current debates among conductors, early music performers, and avant-gardists. - ;Introduction; I. Play It Loud by Jayson Kerr Dobney,Craig J. Inciardi,Anthony DeCurtis,Alan di Perna,David Fricke,Holly George-Warren,Matthew W. Hill Pdf

Play It Loud celebrates the musical instruments that gave rock and roll its signature sound. Seven engrossing essays by veteran music journalists and scholars discuss the technical developments that fostered rock’s seductive riffs and driving rhythms; the evolution of the classic lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums; the thrilling innovations and expanded instrumentation musicians have explored to achieve unique effects; the powerful visual impact instruments have had; and the essential role they have played in the most memorable moments of rock and roll history. Abundant photographs depict rock’s most iconic instruments—including Jerry Lee Lewis’s baby grand piano, Chuck Berry’s Gibson ES-350T guitar, John Lennon’s twelve-string Rickenbacker 325, Keith Moon’s drum set, and the white Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock—both in performance and as works of art in their own right. Produced in collaboration with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this astounding book goes behind the music to offer a rare, in-depth look at the instruments that inspired the musicians and made possible the songs we know and love.

Musical Instruments by J. Kenneth Moore,Jayson Kerr Dobney,E Bradley Strachen-Scherer Pdf

This insightful appreciation of musical instruments features more than one hundred extraordinary pieces from the Metropolitan Museum’s collection. Whether created to entertain a royal court, provide personal solace, or aid in rites and rituals, these instruments fully demonstrate music’s universal resonance and the ingenuity various cultures have deployed for musical expression. The results are astoundingly diverse: from Bronze Age cymbals and sistra to violins made by Stradivari, monumental slit drums from Oceania, and iconic twentieth-century American guitars. Stunning new photographs and a lively text reveal these objects to be works of both musical and visual art, as well as marvels of technology and masterpieces of design. Depictions of instruments and music making—paintings, statues, and pottery—further illuminate the narrative, providing a vivid counterpoint to these remarkable objects.

The Phantom Music Box by Suzanne Weyn Pdf

A mysterious music box from the Haunted Museum follows a young girl home in this spooky read by the author of The Titanic Locket. Don’t touch anything in the Haunted Museum! Emma would rather be at her ballet class than at the Haunted Museum, but she can’t miss her best friend’s birthday party. In a spooky exhibit of music boxes, she’s drawn to a particular one, in which a pair of dancers spin slowly to a haunting melody. But that very night, the music box shows up at her door—like it’s following her. Emma dances better than she ever imagined when the music box is playing. But that’s not all. Sometimes the music speeds up, and the dancers seem to move on their own. Emma finds the lid open, music playing, even when she knows she’d shut it before. And then an eye appears in the mirror inside the lid—someone is watching Emma! The more Emma learns about the history of the music box, the more she realizes she needs to break the hold it has over her before it’s too late. But the better she dances when the music plays, the less she wants to! Praise for The Titanic Locket “Hair-raising. . . . Weyn keeps unexpected chills coming. . . . A quick, jittery read.” —Publishers Weekly “Weyn ratchets up the eeriness . . . and quickly builds to a stormy climax.” —Kirkus Reviews

The Orchestral Revolution by Emily I. Dolan Pdf

This book explores the relationship between the history of orchestration and the development of modern musical aesthetics in the Enlightenment. Using Haydn as a focal point, it examines how the consolidation of the modern orchestra radically altered how people listened to and thought about the expressive capacity of instruments.
