My Breathing System (Classic Reprint) by J. P. Muller Pdf

Excerpt from My Breathing System It may be a matter of surprise to some that I should add yet another volume to the already lengthy catalogue of booklets on The Art of Breathing. In justification I must state that my first reason is, that I have hitherto found all such works to be too much of the nature of text-books on the so-called art; hence it is now my ambition to bring forward the commonsense book on breathing. And my second reason is that, notwithstanding the scores of older books on breathing, we still meet thousands of persons who are unable to breathe properly - not only children and women, but even sportsmen, singers and scientific men. And thousands and thousands still die of consumption, notwithstanding the fact that this could be prevented merely by teaching the children proper breathing. There is, therefore, still much to be done in this direction. If my booklet contains some repetitions, they are only those which are intentional and such as are always allowed in conveying important advice. I have done my best to write it in the same simple style which has made my former books so popular amongst the general public. I must admit, however, that I fear I may have failed in this respect in the chapter concerning the diaphragm, which contains much professional technicality of language. My only excuse for this is that, during my studies and practical investigations, it struck me that many of the theories of science on that subject were erroneous, and I succumbed to the temptation of proving this to be the case. It has always been my habit to see with my own eyes and think with my own brain, instead of trusting to a long succession of authorities, each of whom has quoted from his predecessor, whilst the original one may have been unworthy of credit. This book has not been translated from the Danish, but has been written by myself in the English language. It is hardly necessary to say that the diction has been corrected and improved by my good friends, Mr. Ernest Gunton and Mr. H. R. Murray, to whom my Publishers entrusted this work. I take this opportunity of tendering to them my most cordial thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Respiration (Classic Reprint) by J. S. Haldane Pdf

Excerpt from Respiration When Yale University invited me to deliver the Silliman Lectures for 1915 I was asked to deal with the physiology of breathing and include a general account Of the long series of investigations with which I had been associated on this subject and its practical applications in clinical medicine and hygiene. Owing to the war I was unable to give the lectures in 1915, but in 1916 delivered four lectures which dealt only with some Of the more general conclu sions to which I had been led, and were published early in 1917 by the Yale University Press under the title Organism and Environment as Illustrated by the Physiology Of Breathing. The war has greatly delayed the appearance Of the present book, which treats the physiology Of breathing fully in accordance with the original plan. I have, however, abandoned the lecture form, and what I had written four years ago has had to be largely recast owing to the rapid advance Of knowledge. The book is not a mere compilation, but contains much that has never previously been published, and is an attempt to give a coherent statement and interpretation Of what is known Of the subject at present. I fear that I may sometimes have unwittingly overlooked Observa tions by others which would have added completeness to my account. Yet I hope that what may have been lost in this way will be made up for by the fact that the book embodies the results Of a continuous series Of investigations leading to very definite and consistent conclusions. About the middle Of last century the younger physiologists broke away from the vitalistic traditions which had been handed down to them, and set about to investigate living organisms piece by piece, precisely as they would investigate the working of a complex mechanism. This method seemed to them to promise success, and was popularized by such masters Of clear and force ful expression as Huxley. It is still the orthodox method Of physi ology, but the Old confidence in it has steadily diminished in proportion as exact experimental investigation has shown that the various activities Of a living organism cannot be interpreted in isolation from one another, since organic regulation dominates them. The keynote of this book is the organic regulation Of breathing and its associated phenomena. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shut Your Mouth by George Catlin Pdf

George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Building of Vital Power by Bernarr Macfadden Pdf

Excerpt from Building of Vital Power: Deep Breathing and a Complete System for Strengthening the Heart, Lungs, Stomach and All the Great Vital Organs Without a normal degree of vital power, the attain ment or retainment of health is impossible. Herein lies the close relation between physical culture and vitality, for the former is the parent of the latter by enabling all the organs of the body to perform their individual functions m that orderly fashion that Nature intended that they should when she designed them. So that physical culture makes for health, and vital power is invariably the outcome or rather the companion of a perfectly balanced physical or ganism. Deep Breathing by Sophia Marquise a Ciccolina Pdf

Excerpt from Deep Breathing: As a Means of Promoting the Art of Song, and of Curing Weaknesses and Affections of the Throat and Lungs, Especially Consumption The following pages on Deep Breathing seem to me too valuable not to be preserved in permanent form. They were originally translated by Mr. E. S. Werner for the admirable paper which he publishes, entitled The Voice, and, after having done good service in that journal, he has kindly consented to have them appear in this form for still more extended usefulness. It may not be out of place if I say a few words in this preface on the relations of the atmosphere to life, which will serve to enforce the value of the practice of deep breathing. Where respiration is full and vigorous, as for instance in most birds, life is energetic. Where it is feeble, as in snakes and frogs, life is torpid. Man lives in proportion as he breathes, and the activity of the child is in close relation to the strength of its lungs so, too, is the calm ness, dignity and power of man in proportion to the depth and tranquillity of his respiration. If the lungs are strong and active, there is courage and boldness. If feeble, there is cowardice and debility. To be out of spirits is to be out of breath. To be animated and joyous is to be full of breath. When eager and full of enterprise, we consume large quantities of air; when weary, we yawn when frightened, we are breathless and aghast. -how ever well we feed ourselves, if we do not breathe enough.
