Grandpa's Chair by Terry Thornton Pdf

Grandpa's Chair is a tender children's story of a boy recalling wonderful memories that he and his great grandfather shared. As a very young boy, he and his grandfather would read books and stories and play games while sitting on this special chair. Looking back at a photo album, the boy recalls funny and unique memories of his grandfather, many of which revolve round the chair. The death of the grandfather is handled in a sensitive manner that allows the boy and his mother to look back lovingly at a wonderful man that so enriched their lives. A dispute arose about Grandpa's old chair. Mom wanted to get rid of it since it was old and tattered and did not belong in the living room any longer, but the boy very much wanted to keep it. they end of compromising as the moved Grandpa's special chair to the boy's bedroom where he could now sit and fondly remember his grandfather in the peace and quiet of his own room. This story while fiction, has some elements of truth and recounts some actual events and memories of the author's great grandfather. This is an excellent book to read with a child who has lost a grandparent.

The Bear by Claire Cameron Pdf

The black dog is not scratching. He goes back to his sniffing and huffing and then he starts cracking his bone. Stick and I are huddled tight. . . . It is dark and no Daddy or Mommy and after a while I watch the lids of my eyes close down like jaws. Told from the point of view of a six-year-old child, The Bear is the story of Anna and her little brother, Stick--two young children forced to fend for themselves in Algonquin Park after a black bear attacks their parents. A gripping and mesmerizing exploration of the child psyche, this is a survival story unlike any other, one that asks what it takes to survive in the wilderness and what happens when predation comes from within.

I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry To by Mikołaj Grynberg Pdf

Finalist for the National Jewish Book Awards Finalist, National Translation Award in Prose An exquisitely original collection of darkly funny stories that explore the panorama of Jewish experience in contemporary Poland, from a world-class contemporary writer “These small, searing prose pieces are moving and unsettling at the same time. If the diagnosis they present is right, then we have a great problem in Poland.” —Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel Prize laureate and author of Flights Mikołaj Grynberg is a psychologist and photographer who has spent years collecting and publishing oral histories of Polish Jews. In his first work of fiction—a book that has been widely praised by critics and was shortlisted for Poland’s top literary prize—Grynberg recrafts those histories into little jewels, fictionalized short stories with the ring of truth. Both biting and knowing, I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry To takes the form of first-person vignettes, through which Grynberg explores the daily lives and tensions within Poland between Jews and gentiles haunted by the Holocaust and its continuing presence. In “Unnecessary Trouble,” a grandmother discloses on her deathbed that she is Jewish; she does not want to die without her family knowing. What is passed on to the family is fear and the struggle of what to do with this information. In “Cacophony,” Jewish identity is explored through names, as Miron and his son Jurek demonstrate how heritage is both accepted and denied. In “My Five Jews,” a non-Jewish narrator remembers five interactions with her Jewish countrymen, and her own anti-Semitism, ruefully noting that perhaps she was wrong and should apologize, but no one is left to say “I’m sorry” to. Each of the thirty-one stories is a dazzling and haunting mini-monologue that highlights a different facet of modern Poland’s complex and difficult relationship with its Jewish past.

The Mystery Behind Grandpa's Chair by Linda Mather Pdf

It all started on the day that my mum came home from my school parents evening. Steam was swiftly coming out of her ears, like a pressure cooker ready to explode. I really thought that at any minute she would 'take off'. I began reciting in my head ten, nine, eight, seven, six...... I never did reach blast off before she began ranting at me again. It turns out that my dull and boring History teacher, Mr Butler had slated me, saying that I always messed around in his class. Well I did to be honest I hated history. It was one of my worst subjects. I could not understand why we needed to learn about the past. The future was what was important, that was what we were always told. Grownups always seemed to contradict themselves and it did my head in. No wonder we kids were almost always confused! The worst thing was that Mr Butler told my mum about the assignment I was supposed to be working on. It was: 'A day in the life of a person living through world war two' We were all then to present our work to the class after Christmas. I hadn't started mine and it was November. In fact I was going to make some excuse like my writing arm was playing up or my computer had blown up and left us all in shock so I was unable to do any homework! Now I would have Mum on my back too! "You really need to take an interest in history" my mum had said, banging the dinner pots into the cupboard after they had been left for two hours, drying on the draining board. I don't know if her temper was down to the fact that I had not dried the dinner pots or the poor report from this mind-numbing teacher. Maybe it was a bit of both. We were currently doing all about world war two, which started in 1939 and ended in 1945. It was now 2013. Why would I want to know about a war that happened over fifty years ago? It was before I was even born, before my mum and dad were born and even before my Grandparents were born. How was that going to help me in my future? Anyway, when mum and I start arguing we really fire up. We are both quite stubborn and opinionated so world war two, three and four happen in our house quite regularly. We never seem to be able to meet a compromise. This time was no different. History was totally tiresome. It was so tedious that I nearly always fell asleep in every lesson. If I didn't mess about I would doze off. Which would Mr Butler prefer for goodness sake? "How will knowing about world war two benefit me in getting a job?" I had argued back, forgetting my nanny's frequent words of wisdom. "Don't argue with your mum, Megan. It takes more energy to argue than it does to say yes and mum's always know best and tell you for your own good." She had said this to me many times. She was right of course but I loved winding mum up so for me it took no energy whatsoever! I didn't know how learning about some old war would be for my own good though. Well not until I sat in Grandpa's chair that is.
