The American Contessa by H. Van Vechten Margaret H. Van Vechten,Margaret H. Van Vechten Pdf

In 1959, thirty-five-year-old Peggy was swept away into another time and country. After the unexpected death of her husband, Peggy sought a new backdrop and moved with her four-year-old twin sons, Craig and Mark, and eleven-year-old daughter, Barbara, to Florence, Italy. It was a nine-day voyage that changed her life and ultimately rooted her family in two countries. The American Contessa narrates the adventure of this middle-class American widow who traveled to Italy intending to stay for one year, yet remained there for twenty. This memoir tells about the struggles of adopting a new language and learning about centuries-old traditions and mores that she both admired and misunderstood. Her story chronicles her marriage to Conte Giorgio Magherini, a member of the Italian-landed aristocracy, and of the family's sojourns through numerous Tuscan villas before coming to rest at Norcenni, Giorgio's ancestral home. With photos included, this memoir captures the enchantment of Italy through the eyes of Peggy's family and provides an engaging and insightful look into the world of an American contessa.

My Italian Year by Joseph Collins Pdf

Excerpt from My Italian Year: Observations and Reflections in Italy During the Last Year of the War The writer of these observations and reflections, since childhood a lover of Italy, an admirer of the Italian people, and a frequent visitor to their country, was in the latter part of 1917 assigned to military duty in Italy. He witnessed the remarkable adjustment of the country's internal resistance which took place after the Caporetto disaster, and which blossoming on the Piave in June, 1918, had its fruition in the magnificent victory of the Italian army four months later. The duties of his assignment brought him in close contact with Italians in every walk of life and in every part of the kingdom. Trained by a life of observation, examination and deduction, it was in search of refreshment that the substance of these essays was set down for the entertainment and diversion of one whose thoughts were in Italy, but whose work was in the land that has radiated and reflected the light of liberty to the whole world; the land in which humanity fought its most glorious battle of the nineteenth century, and which to-day is the source of a purifying stream of liberalism in which are being washed the sins of militarism, class, and dynastic privilege. Though some of his statements may seem to disparage certain features of Italian conduct or activity, it is commendation rather than disparagement that the writer feels for the Italian people. My Italian Bulldozer by Alexander McCall Smith Pdf

The best-selling author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series returns with an irresistible new novel about one man’s adventures in the Italian countryside. Paul Stuart, a renowned food writer, finds himself at loose ends after his longtime girlfriend leaves him for her personal trainer. To cheer him up, Paul’s editor, Gloria, encourages him to finish his latest cookbook on-site in Tuscany, hoping that a change of scenery (plus the occasional truffled pasta and glass of red wine) will offer a cure for both heartache and writer’s block. But upon Paul’s arrival, things don’t quite go as planned. A mishap with his rental-car reservation leaves him stranded, until a newfound friend leads him to an intriguing alternative: a bulldozer. With little choice in the matter, Paul accepts the offer, and as he journeys (well, slowly trundles) into the idyllic hillside town of Montalcino, he discovers that the bulldozer may be the least of the surprises that await him. What follows is a delightful romp through the lush sights and flavors of the Tuscan countryside, as Paul encounters a rich cast of characters, including a young American woman who awakens in him something unexpected. A feast for the senses and a poignant meditation on the complexity of human relationships, My Italian Bulldozer is a charming and intensely satisfying love story for anyone who has ever dreamed of a fresh start.

The Phonetic Guide to Italian by Matthew Lawry Pdf

This book is about learning the phrases and sentences and getting to grips with saying the language without going into the grammar first. In that way, you can have fun learning how to say certain things and also you do not come up against stumbling blocks and frustrations. The idea behind this thinking was because when I was a child, my parents used to tell me words before they taught me how to learn the alphabet, so I thought that was a better way round: get used to the language first. I wrote this book to how I thought the student of the language could assimilate and understand it and get a basic grounding of the language. I thought to myself, what was the best thing to learn first, for instance; what the differences between masculine and feminine are; what does the accent mean, so I put this information in the chapter header pages so then I could use more space to actually learn the language. I have also put in a conceptual stage, so then you can think about the language for instance. English has quite a few routes to it, like Latin, so quite a few words are very similar, even though the accent can throw us off. It sounds like proper English for instance: disgraceful, which means scandaloso in Italian, which is nearly the same in English. I believe there is no right or wrong way to learn; it depends on what you want it for. You may want to practise it on holidays, or you may want to read the Italian newspapers, so sometimes you do not necessarily have to learn the alphabet or the grammar. I like to read newspapers on holidays and watch films in Italian; that is why I wanted to learn it. It can also be useful in attaining knowledge for quizzes. The only good criticism is a constructive one, not a destructive one. Matthew Lawry. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have in writing it.
