Sweet Potato Pie, Oh My! by Connie Polley Pdf

Sweet Potato Pie, Oh My! is the first book in the author's Nonny Day Series, each of which is designed to prepare early readers to be successful students of language, learning, and life. In addition to containing fun narratives and beautiful, hand-painted illustrations, each book also contains ideas for engaging with children in meaningful and educational activities. This volume includes two sweet potato pie recipes (including kitchen safety tips for kids), an original song, and ideas for nurturing the child's feelings of self-esteem and self-worth. Story Description The book's principle character Timmy is spending the day with his grandmother, Nonny, as he often does. He calls these days his "Nonny Days." On this day they are enjoying making a scrumptious sweet potato pie-all the way from purchasing "...that pointy, lumpy vegetable..." to savoring their first bites of such a delectable dessert! Meanwhile Nonny is nurturing Timmy's inquisitive mind, and building his self-esteem, by engaging him in a hands-on cooking experience. The narrative is written in delightful read-aloud rhyme, which is known to enhance the ability of the brain to learn and retain new information. Activity Ideas, Recipes, and a Song Included is a section entitled "Nurturing Tips from Nonny" with suggestions for the parent, grandparent, teacher, or other caregiver on how to motivate the young learner to enjoy the adventure of reading. Next, there are recipes for sweet potato pie: a traditional recipe and an easier microwave version. Last, the author leaves us with her clever musical composition about preparing and savoring the taste of sweet potato pie. For those who would like to sing-along with an audio recording of the song, Nonny provides one on her website. About the Author The "Nonny" of this book, Connie Carlisle Polley, is a mother, grandmother, and former public and private school teacher of French and Spanish. For many years she also directed and coordinated children's music programs at her church in Louisville, Kentucky. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Louisville, and did graduate studies at U of L and also at the University of Kentucky in the departments of foreign language and education. In addition to writing children's books, she is a poet, songwriter, an essayist/inspirational writer, and a blogger. She brings to this writing a wealth of experience with children. About the Illustrator The artist collaborator, Courtney Coriell Williams, lives in Louisville as well. She worked closely with Ms. Polley and shared the author's vision of a little boy spending time at Nonny's. This particular day, as every Nonny Day, sets Timmy out on an adventure into "learning by doing," all the while feeling loved. Ms. Williams' free-hand sketches strike a balance between realistic depiction and stylized illustration giving her art a distinctive style. She has her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Indiana University and her Master of Arts in Teaching Degree from the University of the Cumberlands (Kentucky). She currently teaches in the local public-school system. Designed for Pre- and Beginning Readers This book would be excellent... For you and your beginning (or pre-) reader As a birthday gift for a child, age 5-8 As a fall or winter holidays present For a preschool, kindergarten, or first grade class For school, church, or community center libraries For young homeschoolers For the parent-to-be or grandparent-to-be Would make a great activity book for the autumn season, when sweet potatoes are harvested! Thank you! Delight your beginning reader with Sweet Potato Pie, Oh My! It is the author's hope that it will be read many times and perhaps cherished for a lifetime.

A South You Never Ate by Bernard L. Herman Pdf

Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and stretching from Hampton Roads to Assateague Island, Virginia's Eastern Shore is a distinctly southern place with an exceptionally southern taste. In this inviting narrative, Bernard L. Herman welcomes readers into the communities, stories, and flavors that season a land where the distance from tide to tide is often less than five miles. Blending personal observation, history, memories of harvests and feasts, and recipes, Herman tells of life along the Eastern Shore through the eyes of its growers, watermen, oyster and clam farmers, foragers, church cooks, restaurant owners, and everyday residents. Four centuries of encounter, imagination, and invention continue to shape the foodways of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, melding influences from Indigenous peoples, European migrants, enslaved and free West Africans, and more recent newcomers. Herman reveals how local ingredients and the cooks who have prepared them for the table have developed a distinctly American terroir--the flavors of a place experienced through its culinary and storytelling traditions. This terroir flourishes even as it confronts challenges from climate change, declining fish populations, and farming monoculture. Herman reveals this resilience through the recipes and celebrations that hold meaning, not just for those who live there but for all those folks who sit at their tables--and other tables near and far.

Author Shay Cook shares witty anecdotes and earnest life messages in an assortment of rhyme and free verse, with words that sway and saunter into the heart. Shay's work captures aspects of the human experience, exploring an abundance of topics including love, forgiveness, and grief. Divided into four intimate sections, this collection ventures into the thoughts and emotions of all with poems like "The Pianist" and "An Impatient Winter." Savor the opulence of silk in this new compilation of works past and present. Timeless Standing close I feel the wind against this frigid sky, I kick off my shoes, curl on the couch, with me, myself and I. With lemon tea, a well-read book, I grab my warm afghan, And nestle beneath the crocheted yarn and think about this man who is timeless. Timeless as the autumn leaves which dance upon the foliage. Like summer rain which grows the grain and tulips in the spillage. Like music, like the painter's brush which strokes his work of art, As Beethoven and Chopin who plays upon the heart, this man is timeless. ...

Sweet Potato Soul by Jenné Claiborne Pdf

100 vegan recipes that riff on Southern cooking in surprising and delicious ways, beautifully illustrated with full-color photography. Jenné Claiborne grew up in Atlanta eating classic Soul Food—fluffy biscuits, smoky sausage, Nana's sweet potato pie—but thought she'd have to give all that up when she went vegan. As a chef, she instead spent years tweaking and experimenting to infuse plant-based, life-giving, glow-worthy foods with the flavor and depth that feeds the soul. In Sweet Potato Soul, Jenné revives the long tradition of using fresh, local ingredients creatively in dishes like Coconut Collard Salad and Fried Cauliflower Chicken. She improvises new flavors in Peach Date BBQ Jackfruit Sliders and Sweet Potato-Tahini Cookies. She celebrates the plant-based roots of the cuisine in Bootylicious Gumbo and savory-sweet Georgia Watermelon & Peach Salad. And she updates classics with Jalapeño Hush Puppies, and her favorite, Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls. Along the way, Jenné explores the narratives surrounding iconic and beloved soul food recipes, as well as their innate nutritional benefits—you've heard that dandelion, mustard, and turnip greens, okra, and black eyed peas are nutrition superstars, but here's how to make them super tasty, too. From decadent pound cakes and ginger-kissed fruit cobblers to smokey collard greens, amazing crabcakes and the most comforting sweet potato pie you'll ever taste, these better-than-the-original takes on crave-worthy dishes are good for your health, heart, and soul.
