The Defeat of Barisan Nasional by Francis E Hutchinson,Lee Hwok Aun Pdf

The results of Malaysia’s 14th General Elections of May 2018 were unexpected and transformative. Against conventional wisdom, the newly reconfigured opposition grouping Pakatan Harapan (PH) decisively defeated the incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN), ending six decades of uninterrupted dominant one-party rule. Despite a long-running financial scandal dogging the ruling coalition, pollsters and commentators predicted a solid BN victory or, at least, a narrow parliamentary majority. Yet, on the day, deeply rooted political dynamics and influential actors came together, sweeping aside many prevailing assumptions and reconfiguring the country’s political reality in the process. In order to understand the elections and their implications, this edited volume brings together contributions from ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute researchers and a group of selected collaborators to examine the elections from three angles: campaign dynamics; important trends among major interest groups; and local-level dynamics and developments in key states. This analytical work is complemented by personal narratives from a selection of GE-14 participants.

Sabah from the Ground by Bridget Welsh,Vilashini Somiah,Benjamin Y H Loh Pdf

Sabah's 2020 election was Malaysia's pandemic election. While attention has centred on the impact the election had on the increase of COVID-19, this collection brings together scholars, journalists and social scientists who were on the ground on Sabah to analyse what happened, why, and the broader implications of the outcome for Sabah and Malaysian politics. The book is the first in-depth study of a Sabah election. It is multidisciplinary, with authors from different perspectives, and the majority of the authors are from Sabah. Traditional explanations prioritize the federal-state relationship in shaping Sabah politics. This collection challenges this paradigm, suggesting that politics in Sabah should be better understood as a reflection of conditions within Sabah—as Sabahans struggle to navigate and survive on Malaysia's periphery.

Implementing sound economic policies is vital in improving the social well-being and standard of living in the state. This book also explores socio- economic issues involving various ethnic groups in Sabah, especially improving human capital and infrastructure investment. The author identified that these elements are the key contributors and enablers to Sabah’s economic growth. Thus, economic growth and development are consistent agendas to ensure future generations can live comfortably in a conducive economic environment. Hence, this book re-emphasises the importance of knowledge workers in preparing the Industrial Revolution 4.0. The author also recommends that Sabah’s further economic development be attained through rigorous efforts from strong cooperation of state and federal government and firms, private sectors, industries, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the people. The development can be realised through investment and innovation. This book is significant to academics, students, policymakers, and community in increasing awareness of the importance of labour, human capital and economic development in Sabah. While adding to existing literature, this book can also be an additional reference about Sabah’s key economic characteristics and labour market.

Sabah: Is it a State Built by Local or Foreign Perspiration by Ujin Matjin ,Caroline Geetha Pdf

Labour the main resource for production other than capital and technology or knowledge in an emerging country like Malaysia. The total factor productivity is high for labour compared to other resources. To enhance it further, the government came up with policies to upgrade the skills and knowledge of the workforce. Labour was combined with knowledge or technology to create human capital. The human capital was the main reason that attracted foreign direct investment into the nation. Knowledgeable and skilful human capital is also important to increase the total factor productivity of capital. Under the New Economic Model, the nation was separated into various corridors to attract foreign direct investment into the nation. The inflow of foreign direct investment guaranteed job opportunity, knowledge and technology and also export. This appreciates the exchange rate and purchasing power, eventually the economic growth of the nation. Sabah was one of the corridors that had great potential to attract foreign direct investment especially in the service-based industry and agriculture industry. Other than its uniqueness in terms of its natural environment, rich in flora and fauna, Sabah is also able to attract foreign direct investment due to its labour force. Labour force in Sabah consists of locals and foreign. The influx of foreign labour in Sabah is immense in the agriculture sector. Foreign labour differs from expatriates. The need for foreign labour has its advantages and disadvantages. The foreign labour was deemed important in the production activity but it caused unemployment among locals, allocation of resources for their needs, and also social costs like crime and diseases. Thus, the Sabah government has taken numerous measures to reduce the dependence on foreign labour. But before such measures are taken an empirical analysis need to be carried out to justify whether the Sabah economic growth was dependent on local labour or foreign labour. An advance econometric analysis was used in this book to justify that Sabah’s economic growth is foreign labour dependent.

Microfinance In Asia by Gan Christopher,Nartea Gilbert Pdf

Lack of credit access is severe in low income and poor families that are normally considered to have fewer opportunities to borrow from banks due to insufficient valuable assets for collateral. These low-income households face limited opportunity to acquire new technology and working capital for agricultural production and thus tend to fall behind. As a result, providing access to finance to low-income rural households has been considered an important component of any rural development strategy. Microfinance programmes, in particular, have been gradually embedded in national strategies of many developing countries as they are poverty-focused. They aim to facilitate the access to financial services such as credit for the poor who are usually disadvantaged in terms of access to conventional financial services from formal financial institutions. The objective of this book is to provide an overview of microfinance programmes in Asia focusing in particular on the determinants of the accessibility of rural households to microcredit. The book studies seven Asian countries such as China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh with two specific case studies.
