Travel, Reminiscences and Experiences (Classic Reprint) by Emil Klopfer Pdf

Excerpt from Travel, Reminiscences and Experiences But it was still more attractive in the sunny spring-time, when vessels, bound for tropical coun tries, glided on the tide, or in tow of the puffing, snorting, little tugs, down the E)be. My desire to go along was then often so strong that I could hardly conquer my inclination to run away from home to see the world. These scenes, so dear to me, worked in such a way upon my mind that it became my one ambition to leave Europe as soon as possible. During the day my thoughts were wandering about in different parts of our beautiful world, and at night, in pleasant dreams I found myself amid the forest, or on the plains of South and North America. When I quitted school I was scarcely fourteen years of age, but in spite of my youth I would have left Europe at once with pleasure. In Germany no one will admit self-reliance to be a virtue in young people, and all elderly persons insist that they must be guided exactly as little children. In my family the same idea prevailed, and an aversion to causing trouble by any act of mine, determined me to submit to the wishes of my people, and to accept' the position of an apprentice to a commercial firm. Extract: "Nothing can be fairer to the eye than these "summer isles of Eden" lying all about Venice, far and near. The water forever trembles and changes, with every change of light, from one rainbow glory to another, as with the restless hues of an opal; and even when the splendid tides recede, and go down with the sea, they leave a heritage of beauty to the empurpled mud of the shallows, all strewn with green, disheveled sea-weed. The lagoons have almost as wide a bound as your vision." William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. Howells is known to be the father of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction. After short campaign in Republican administration, Howells was appointed a consul in Venice in 1861. He remained in Italy for 4 years and during this time he wrote travel sketches and reports describing life in town and country. Later on, he came back to Europe, which resulted in few more travel books to his name. Reminiscences of Travel in Australia, America, and Egypt by Richard Tangye Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of Travel in Australia, America, and Egypt Having made several voyages to Australia, I have often been asked how I managed to relieve the monotony of so long a period on the water. I have never felt this monotony, simply because on each occasion I have set myself something to do. In Mr. Trevelyan's "Life of Lord Macaulay" it is stated that when returning from India that statesman set himself the task of mastering the German language, and accomplished it during the voyage. I did not attempt anything so ambitious, but during my last voyage I occupied the time in writing the following pages; and as they were written under many difficulties, I feel I may confidently rely upon the indulgence of those who may do me the honour of reading them. Sarah Jane's Travel Memoirs Series Boxset by Sarah Jane Butfield Pdf

Glass Half Full: Our Australian Adventure Find out what it takes to keep the Glass Half Full, as challenging life events including grief, loss, PTSD and devastating floods, test this expat step-family to their limits. After enduring divorce and numerous child custody battles, Sarah Jane knew that a fresh start in Australia was their only chance of future happiness and that as a family they were making the right decisions. Living the Australian dream in Alice Springs was everything they hoped for until life-changing events started to test the foundations of this resilient family. Using every ounce of positivity they could muster they struggled on and just as they thought the worst was over Mother Nature intervened and washed away the roots to their new life during the Brisbane floods of 2011. This story lets you experience Australian life with an inspirational woman and her courageous family, as they struggle to survive challenging life events and keep their dreams alive. Life is never without its challenges, but how many life-changing events can one family endure before they reach breaking point? Find out in this heart wrenching and touching true story. Two Dogs and a Suitcase: Clueless in Charente Follows the French exploits of Sarah Jane and her family as they endeavour to rebuild their lives in another new country, after spending four and half years in Australia. The title says it all: literally what they have and where they are, but that's only part of the story. Their goal was to focus positively on the present and to start a new, optimistic chapter back in Europe nearer to the children, leaving the dark clouds of the challenges they faced in Australia as a distant memory. Share their experiences as they arrive in rural South West France portrayed through Sarah Jane’s reflections, thoughts and observations about her family and their new French lifestyle. Follow Sarah Jane’s tentative steps into a writing career as they start renovating a rustic cottage while managing the ups and downs of family life. Once again, Sarah Jane will make you laugh and cry as she endeavours to live life to the fullest with a generous helping of positive spin thrown in for good measure. Our Frugal Summer in Charente: An Expat’s Kitchen Garden Journal Meet Sarah Jane, a woman with a reputation for culinary catastrophe who tries to keep her family fed in challenging circumstances in rural France. Frugal living was not part of the plan when they arrived from Australia to undertake the renovation of a quaint cottage in the Charente. However, when life throws them a curve-ball the challenge was set. How would they survive in France with very little money and two Australian cattle dogs. The answer came in the form of 5 chickens, 4 ducks, a vegetable garden and hedgerow foraging! The frugal plan was to save money by any means possible, to enable any money they could earn to be invested into continuing the renovation of the cottage. In true ‘Good Life’ style Sarah Jane attacks this challenge head on by keeping some small livestock and converting a garden, that resembled a meadow, into a French ‘potager’ or kitchen garden. The French tradition of using produce from their ‘potagers’ is renowned for enabling families to create meals that are healthy, cost effective and simple. There are 31 recipes for a variety of food and drinks, included in a month by month account, of how they transformed a neglected garden into a frugal yet productive expat kitchen garden.

Reminiscences, Memoirs and Lectures of Monsignor A. Ravoux, V. G. by Augustin Ravoux Pdf

Monsignor Augustin Ravoux (1815-1906) emigrated from France in 1838, responding to the plea of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa, for missionaries among the Indians. His first mission was at Prairie du Chien, where he remained until he began ministering to the Sioux [Dakota] Indians in 1841. During his time with the Sioux, 1841-1844, he became proficient in their language and developed a permanent mission at Little Prairie (now Chaska). Between 1844 and 1851, Ravoux also ministered to communities at Mendota, St. Paul, Lake Pipin, and St. Croix. Ravoux divides his book into three sections: reminiscences and memoirs comprise the first; lectures he delivered comprise the second; and miscellaneous letters, lectures, and essays (usually written by other authors) comprise the third. The reminiscences and memoirs cover the period from 1838-1862 and conclude with his ministry to Sioux condemned to death for their part in the 1862 Sioux uprising.
