The Fireman’s Son by Daniel F. Powell Pdf

After the war, a sickly mother gives birth to twins. Realizing they can’t care for both boys, the parents keep one child and give the other, who was considered to be not normal, to a family member. Though he was well cared for and was given an education and the best of everything, he was resentful of not being raised by his birth family. In addition, he seemed to have inherited some of his mother’s mental instability. He was caught in the grips of changing morals, discovering the sub-culture of covert sexuality. Absorbing the experiences of his first eighteen years, he sought a place where he can develop his personality. Upon finding “flower power” had blossomed in Philadelphia, he fell in love with all the city had to offer. A story of deep love and profound regret, this novel offers a look at one family’s dynamics and demonstrates the consequences of choices made by many throughout the years.

Vagina Problems by Lara Parker Pdf

“In Vagina Problems...Lara Parker unpacks the personal and economic costs of endometriosis.” —Vanity Fair “A refreshingly honest read about living with chronic pain.” —Hello Giggles With unflinching honesty, Lara Parker, the Deputy Director for BuzzFeed, shares her day-to-day challenges of living, working, and loving with chronic pain caused by endometriosis in this raw, darkly humorous, and hopeful memoir. I wasn’t ready to be completely honest about my vagina yet, and the world wasn’t ready for that either. But I was getting there. I wanted the world to know that all of this pain I had been feeling...that it was related to my vagina. Thus, Vagina Problems was born. It was a cutesy name. It was my way of taking this pain and saying, “Whatever. I’m here. I have it. It sucks. Let’s talk about it.” In April 2014, Deputy Editorial Director at BuzzFeed Lara Parker opened up to the world in an article on the website: she suffers from endometriosis. And beyond that? She let the whole world know that she wasn’t having any sex, as sex was excruciatingly painful. Less than a year before, she received not only the diagnosis of endometriosis, but also a diagnosis of pelvic floor dysfunction, vulvodynia, vaginismus, and vulvar vestibulitis. Combined, these debilitating conditions have wreaked havoc on her life, causing excruciating pain throughout her body since she was fourteen years old. These are her Vagina Problems. It was five years before Lara learned what was happening to her body. Five years of doctors insisting she just had “bad period cramps,” or implying her pain was psychological. Shamed and stigmatized, Lara fought back against a medical community biased against women and discovered that the ignorance of many doctors about women’s anatomy was damaging more than just her own life. One in ten women have endometriosis and it takes an average of seven years before they receive an accurate diagnosis—or any relief from this incurable illness’ chronic pain. With candid revelations about her vaginal physical therapy, dating as a straight woman without penetrative sex, coping with painful seizures while at the office, diet and wardrobe malfunctions when your vagina hurts all the time, and the depression and anxiety of feeling unloved, Lara tackles it all in Vagina Problems: Endometriosis, Painful Sex, and Other Taboo Topics with courage, wit, love, and a determination to live her best life.

The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter Pdf

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER From Canadian OB/GYN, women's health advocate and New York Times columnist Dr. Jen Gunter: The Vagina Bible is a comprehensive, accessible antidote to the maelstrom of misinformation around female sexual health, and the ultimate guide to everything a person needs to know about the vagina and vulva. We are well into the twenty-first century and have access to more information than ever before, yet many people don't know that a vagina is self-cleaning, condoms should be used with a lubricant, eating sugar doesn't cause a yeast infection, and sex shouldn't be painful. As a physician with twenty-five years of clinical experience, Dr. Jen Gunter is all too familiar with the fears, fallacies and misinformation that abound about vaginal health. On Twitter, she hilariously exposes unscientific wellness advice and debunks potentially harmful and stunningly unnecessary products from "vagina profiteers." Dr. Gunter knows the questions women (and men) have about female sexual health, and in The Vagina Bible, she answers them all. For: the sixteen-year-old trying to figure out tampons; the twenty-six-year-old wondering how to avoid a UTI; the thirty-six-year-old trans woman navigating her new anatomy; the forty-six-year-old worried about the changing appearance of her vulva; the fifty-six-year-old looking into the HPV vaccine for her daughter (and maybe herself); the sixty-six-year-old experiencing painful sex; The Vagina Bible offers a repository of accurate information based on science, and delivered with wit and wisdom. This is the fact-based, inclusive, and empowering guide you deserve to advocate for your own body.

The Friendly Atheist: Thoughts on the Role of Religion in Politics and Media by Hemant Mehta Pdf

Every semester, in the weeks leading up to final exams, I hand out a study guide to all of my high school math students and have them complete it so that they have a sense of what to expect on the big test. Inevitably, students ask: "If I just study this packet, will I be prepared for the exam?" I sigh. I stare at them. I give them the response every teacher knows by heart: No, of course the packet isn't enough. You should go through your notes, your homework, and the textbook. You should redo the examples we did in class and try more practice problems from the book. The study guide is only a summary of the big ideas from the semester. If you really want to understand the subject, you have to go much more in depth. In a sense, this book is a study guide for the things I've written about over the past several years. My name is Hemant Mehta, and I began FriendlyAtheist.com in 2006 (before I began teaching high school) in order to talk about a topic I was incredibly passionate about—religion. Not necessarily to convince people that God didn't exist, but to talk about the issues that mattered now that we were Godless. What you see in this book is a compilation of posts discussing the subjects I have written the most about. They are reprinted here, with minimal editing, to offer a glimpse into my world and to show you the concerns I've had as an American atheist. That means talking about atheists who fight for their (and, in many respects, our) rights, responding to people who smear us just because we're not religious, and making people aware of the way atheists are viewed by the majority of Americans (hint: we're not very popular). That means talking about politics and social issues (in particular: the fight for equal rights for the LGBT community), since those are the major issues in our country where rational thinking, free from religious tradition, is needed but seldom found. That means talking about the obstacles that young atheists have to deal with on a regular basis. Their challenges are so different than the ones we face in the "real world," yet their courage inspires all of us. To be a vocal atheist is never easy, and there are students promoting rational thinking on campus while keeping their administrators in check. They do this despite risking their social capital. At the same time, when those students are not around to act as watchdogs, we must do it for them and shine a spotlight on illegal intrusions of religion into our public schools. Are these the only issues that matter to atheists? No, but they are the issues that have taken up the bulk of my writing in the years since I began covering atheism-related news. If you want to get a fuller picture of what atheists are talking about, what our activism involves, and what our future looks like, no single writer can do that for you, just as no single study guide will prepare you for a final exam.

Unruly Catholic Women Writers by Jeana DelRosso,Leigh Eicke,Ana Kothe Pdf

Finalist for the 2013 ForeWord IndieFab Book of the Year Award in the Anthologies Category This unique literary anthology is devoted to unruly Catholic women. In short stories, poems, personal essays, and drama, the contributors describe women's struggles with Catholicism and also complicate contemporary understandings of women's relationships to their faith. Catholicism often oppresses the women in these creative pieces, but it also inspires them to challenge literary, social, political, and religious hierarchies. The collection reflects the considerations of a wide range of women from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, geographic locations, and generations; they encompass the gamut of reactions to the Catholic experience—humor, anger, nostalgia, critique, appreciation, and engagement or rejection on one's own terms. Authors address real life versus Catholic dogma, motherhood, childhood, alienation from the Church, Catholic school days, mentors and exemplary figures, Church strictures on women's sexualities, and leaving or remaining in the Church among many other experiences. Readers will find this a rich and multifaceted exploration, one that offers new perspectives and moments of recognition.

Intended Victims: An Intense Serial Killer Suspense Thriller (Born Bad # 3) by Meghan O'Flynn Pdf

Like father, like daughter. Serial killers face off in this addictive and intense psychological thriller for fans of Gone Girl. Poppy never believed she’d be a married woman with a pet pug, but she’s enjoying it…as much as a suburban psychopath can enjoy anything. Of course, feelings are irrelevant. It’s actions that make you a good employee, a good friend, a good wife—her husband would never believe that she’s as numb inside as a dead tooth. And though the fact that she got her serial killer father locked away doesn’t speak well of her as a daughter, she’s content to remain hidden in his shadow. But when a local murder rocks her town, Poppy finds herself at the center of the investigation. Strangely, the lead detective is the same man who investigated her father, an Alabama sheriff who seems to have taken a job with the state police for the sole purpose of watching her. It doesn’t help when evidence from the local murder scene leads back to Poppy—someone is trying to frame her for a crime she didn’t commit. But Poppy won’t make that easy—no way is she ending up in prison like her father. And though her dad may have been a murderous psychopath, he was even more adept at manipulation. You don’t kill fifty people and still have the neighbors convinced you’re a great guy unless you’re an excellent faker. And he taught Poppy well. She’ll give this town something they’ll never see coming. Twisted, sharp as a blade, and addictively macabre, Intended Victims doesn’t let up—O’Flynn is a master of the unexpected. The Born Bad series is a guilty pleasure that will keep readers hooked from page one. For fans of Heartsick, Dark Places, and the Mr. Mercedes series. *** KEYWORDS: serial killer’s daughter, serial killer father, female protagonist, psychopath thriller, serial killer books, serial killer series, mystery domestic crime, dark suspense thriller, female serial killer, amateur sleuths, whodunnit mystery, whodunit thriller, psychological suspense, suspense fiction, suspense book, nail biting fiction, nail biter mystery, vigilante justice, edge of your seat suspense, dark crime, serial killer, revenge, vengeance, mystery suspense thriller series, hard-boiled mysteries, pulp, noir, noir thriller, crime noir, crime, gritty psychological thrillers, serial killers, crime thrillers, crime fiction, gritty mysteries, mystery series, thriller series, psychological thrillers, psychological thriller series, psychological suspense, psychological thriller books, pulp, nail biter mysteries, crime fiction, murder mystery, serial killer thriller, whodunit, whodunnit, nail-biter, intense mystery, suspense fiction, family drama, small town mystery, dark and suspenseful, suspense, daughter of serial killer, family crime, psychopaths, mystery domestic crime

Father, Who Art Thou? by Veronica Andrews Pdf

I often feel as if I'm a small tree in this universe, vulnerable to even the slightest breeze. My leaves fall like tears. And like those leaves, my tears come back every season. Some branches break as my heart does, from a harsh wind caused by one's hurtful words or hurtful doing. I remain standing bare, feeling and looking undesirable, sad, lonely, cold, and lifeless. Until love shines over me like the sun's warmth coming through the clouds. Allowing my branches to breathe again, filling my hea
