Comets, Meteors and Asteroids by John Man Pdf

Comets, Meteors and Asteroids explores the origins and life story of these cosmic phenomena which add elements of drama to all planets; in particular, to Earth and its life forms. Comets have always been objects of mystery and terror. This fear, once dismissed as superstition, is sometimes justified: comets really can bring catastrophes in their wake. Research shows that comets are close relatives of both the space dust which forms meteors or shooting stars, and of the larger, inert rocks - the asteroids - which circle the Sun in their millions. All of these objects, left over from the formation of the Solar System, have threatened life with massive impacts and 'nuclear winters'. However, they have also been part of the process by which the Solar System renews itself - we owe our very existence to the impact that destroyed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Discovering the truth about this space debris - whose numbers increase by the thousand every year - has revolutionized our view of the Solar System. We now know that even the most distant planet is part of our Sun's system. This stretches out into icy interstellar wastes, from where these tiny objects occasionally fall sunwards to delight us with displays of cosmic brilliance, and threaten us with destruction. The threat of collision with Earth has placed comets and asteroids at the top of the agenda for astronomers, the public, and increasingly for governments. Comets, Meteors and Asteroids gives a fascinating and insightful exploration of these space wanderers and the cosmos. For a more comprehensive look at the solar system John Gribbin's SPACE - OUR FINAL FRONTIER is also available as part of this series.

Seven Wonders of Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors by Ron Miller Pdf

From earliest times, humans have wondered about the sky above them and have studied all visible objects. People began to identify differences between stars and planets, and as technology advanced with telescopes and space probes, they sought deeper understanding of the millions of bits of debris rocketing through the solar system. Scientists determined that most of these objects are left over from the creation of the planets and their moons. They classified these leftovers into categories such as asteroids, comets, and meteors. In this book, we'll explore seven wonders of asteroids, comets, and meteors. Ceres is a huge mountain-sized asteroid that orbits with other asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. Other marvels include Ganymede, the largest asteroid in the group called Earthgrazers or Near-Earth Objects, and Halley's comet, a ball of ice, that passes Earth every seventy-five or so years. We'll also explore the amazing impact that space debris can have on planets and moons. The Borealis Basin, a wondrous crater more than 5,000 miles across, formed when an asteroid collided with Mars in the ancient past. Then we will travel to the far-off Kuiper belt, where as many as 200 million icy bodies orbit, and wonder at the mystery of planetlike objects, such as Pluto and Charon. Finally, we’ll can experience a space wonder firsthand by standing outside on a night in August to watch the spectacular Perseid meteor shower fill the sky.

The Tungus Event, Or, The Great Siberian Meteorite by John Engledew Pdf

This popular science book shares the fascination of the Tungus Event, a major mystery of the 20th century, in a factual and informed way. It provides "on-the-ground" descriptions of the site and explains the findings and the puzzlement of international scientists who have investigated it over the decades. After a brief and readable overview of comets, meteors, the sun and the solar system, the author ponders the range of possible explanations for the "great Siberian meteorite." The research is up to date, factual and scientific. While making no absurd claims to solving the puzzle, the author studies some intriguing clues in NASA's orbit diagrams for Comet Encke, and he is bold in discussing the possible causes of what was the greatest natural explosion in recorded history. As he points out, [Hypotheses] include rogue asteroids, mini black holes and even alien intervention....These explanations are not entirely equal to the facts. In the unique case of the Tunguska event, there was wholesale destruction to the mighty taiga woodlands but none of the debris that one would expect should exist from the body itself. Evidence like a strewn field of meteorite debris or meteoric dust on the trees and ground were never found, nor were any craters, in the area beneath the site of the fireball nor anywhere along the path it took. There are no craters because the Tunguska Cosmic Body (TCB) did not hit the ground. Atmospheric anomalies prior to the dramatic appearance of the fiery body puzzlingly occurred for several days, adding to the enigma. There are just a handful of English-language books on this subject. The most recent, The Tunguska Mystery, by the Russian Rubstov (Astronomers Universe, Springer Science 2009) is authoritative but highly technical and hard going for the general reader. Mr. Engledew instead tells the story in a balanced and engaging style.
