Myths and Legends of the Great Plains by Katharine Berry Judson Pdf

Excerpt from Myths and Legends of the Great Plains From the edge of the Darkening Land, where stand the mountains which encircle the earthplain, eastward toward the Sunland, lie the great plains of America. Smooth and flat and green they stretch away, hundreds of miles, rising from a dead level into a soft rolling of the land, then into the long green waves of the prairies where rivers flow, where the water ripples as it flows, and trees shade the banks of the gleaming water. Here, amidst the vast sweep of the plains which stretch away to the horizon on every side, boundless, limitless, endless, lived the plains Indians. Myths and Legends of the Great Plains by Katharine Berry Judson Pdf

Way beyond, once upon a time, some of the Osages lived in the sky. They did not know where they came from, so they went to Sun. They said, "From where did we come?" He said, "You are my children." Then they wandered still further and came to Moon. Moon said, "I am your mother; Sun is your father. You must go away from here. You must go down to the earth and live there." Thus begins the first selection in Katharine Berry Judson's remarkable collection. These are the stories passed from generation to generation by the Osage, the Dakota, the Omaha, the Ponca, and other peoples who have inhabited the Great Plains of America for many, many generations. The myths explain the unknown origins of their known world. The legends inspire great deeds through the ancient acts of those who came before. Native American Legends An Anthology of Creation Myths and Origin Tales by G.W. Mullins Pdf

Native American Mythology began long before the European settlers arrived on North American soil. The most popular of these myths usually are the ones dealing with Creation and Origins of people, places and things. These myths deal with both how the physical world as we know it came to be and how the many features of specific cultures originated. They cover areas of gods and man and why we were separated, where did the different races come from, and when did evil surface. Being there were so many different tribes with countless beliefs and customs, the only way to understand these beliefs is through understanding the Native American stories. In this book there is a wide landscape of different tribes that present a true look at these beliefs. Among the stories included in this anthology are: Creation of the First Indians, Creation of the Red and White Races, In the Beginning, How the Great Chiefs Made the Moon and the Sun, Origin of Fire, The First Moccasins, The Origin of Game and of Corn, The Origin of Medicine, The Origin of Summer and Winter, Origin of the Animals, Origin of the Buffalo, Origin of the Clans, Origin of the Sweat Lodge, The Origin of the Winds, The Origin of Yosemite, The Origin of Earth, Origin of the Lakota Peace Pipe, How the World Was Made, The First Fire, Origin of the Pleiades And the Pine, and many more.

Native American Myths by Matt Clayton Pdf

Explore Captivating Native American Myths Three captivating manuscripts in one book: Native American Mythology: Captivating Myths of Indigenous Peoples from North America Cherokee Mythology: Captivating Myths and Legends of a Native American Tribe Choctaw Mythology: Captivating Myths from the Choctaw and Other Indigenous Peoples from the Southeastern United States Part of the history of Indigenous cultures is, of course, their traditions of storytelling. Myths, legends, and folktales all play important roles in explaining how the world came to be the way it is, as well as giving listeners entertainment with humorous or scary stories, or giving them role models to look up to in hero tales. The author of this book has endeavored to provide at least one myth from every major culture group in North America: Arctic, Subarctic, Plateau, Northwest Coast, Great Basin, Great Plains, California, Southwest, Southeast, and Northeast Forest. Of the many different genres of story available, four are chosen for this present volume. The first has to do with the origins of things, either of the world in its entirety or some aspect thereof that was significant to the people who created the story. The other side of creation is death, and so the second section concerns tales of ghosts and monsters, some terrifying, some friendly, some the victims of prank-playing living people. However, out of the acts of destruction wrought by supernatural beings there is often something new created or a change worked that is necessary for the world to function properly. Tricksters and heroes occupy the third and fourth sections of the book, respectively. Coyote is, of course, a favorite trickster character for most North American Indigenous groups, while Raven is important to peoples in the Pacific Northwest and Arctic regions. Beaver is a trickster for the Nez Perce of the Columbia River Plateau, and for the Pomo of California, little Woodrat also lives by his wits. These tricksters are by turns clever, gullible, victor, and victim, but always there is a moral lesson to be learned from the stories of their adventures. The final section of the book presents stories of Indigenous heroes. Many of these heroes are shared by multiple cultures, usually within the same or adjacent culture areas. Some of the topics and myths covered in manuscript 1 of this book include: Origins Ghosts and Monsters Trickster Tales Hero Tales And much, much more! Some of the topics and myths covered in manuscript 2 of this book include: Why the Possum's Tail is Bare Kanati and Selu The Tlanuwa and the Uktena Two Tales of Snake Transformations The Daughter of the Sun The Ball Game of the Birds and Animals How Disease and Medicine Came to Be And much more! Some of the topics and myths covered in manuscript 3 of this book include: Choctaw Myths and Legends Legends from Other Southern Tribes So if you want to learn about Native American Myths, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button!

Parallel Myths by J.F. Bierlein Pdf

“Unusually accessible and useful . . . An eye-opener to readers into the universality and importance of myth in human history and culture.”—William E. Paden, Chair, Department of Religion, University of Vermont For as long as human beings have had language, they have had myths. Mythology is our earliest form of literary expression and the foundation of all history and morality. Now, in Parallel Myths, classical scholar J. F. Bierlein gathers the key myths from all of the world's major traditions and reveals their common themes, images, and meanings. Parallel Myths introduces us to the star players in the world's great myths—not only the twelve Olympians of Greek mythology, but the stern Norse Pantheon, the mysterious gods of India, the Egyptian Ennead, and the powerful deities of Native Americans, the Chinese, and the various cultures of Africa and Oceania. Juxtaposing the most potent stories and symbols from each tradition, Bierlein explores the parallels in such key topics as creation myths, flood myths, tales of love, morality myths, underworld myths, and visions of the Apocalypse. Drawing on the work of Joseph Campbell, Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, Karl Jaspers, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and others, Bierlein also contemplates what myths mean, how to identify and interpret the parallels in myths, and how mythology has influenced twentieth-century psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and literary studies. “A first-class introduction to mythology . . . Written with great clarity and sensitivity.”—John G. Selby, Associate Professor, Roanoke College
