The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels Pdf

From the National Book Award-winning and National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of The Gnostic Gospels comes a dramatic interpretation of Satan and his role on the Christian tradition. "Arresting...brilliant...this book illuminates the angels with which we must wrestle to come to the truth of our bedeviling spritual problems." —The Boston Globe With magisterial learning and the elan of a born storyteller, Pagels turns Satan’s story into an audacious exploration of Christianity’s shadow side, in which the gospel of love gives way to irrational hatreds that continue to haunt Christians and non-Christians alike.

Your God is Too Glorious by Chad Bird Pdf

Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.

A mysterious hacker, who identifies himself only as “Warlock,” brings down the FBI’s website and posts a code in its place. Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan by John Day Pdf

This masterly book is the climax of over twenty-five years of study of the impact of Canaanite religion and mythology on ancient Israel and the Old Testament. It is John Day's magnum opus in which he sets forth all his main arguments and conclusions on the subject. The work considers in detail the relationship between Yahweh and the various gods and goddesses of Canaan, including the leading gods El and Baal, the great goddesses (Asherah, Astarte and Anat), astral deities (Sun, Moon and Lucifer), and underworld deities (Mot, Resheph, Molech and the Rephaim). Day assesses both what Yahwism assimilated from these deities and what it came to reject. More generally he discusses the impact of Canaanite polytheism on ancient Israel and how monotheism was eventually achieved.

Jesus Christ – The Earthly name of the Devil by Stoyan Dinkov Pdf

Let us examine in more detail the doctrine of the virgin and the immaculate conception. This dogma is one of the basic religions of Christianity and was established in 431 at the Third Ecumenical Council in Ephesus, that is, four centuries after the death of Jesus. The dogma is based on deliberately made inaccurate translations, replaced words and correspondingly free interpretations of the original texts of the prophets of Tanah (Old Testament). This is, perhaps, the most essential and extremely important example of a purposeful replacement of words that has led to erroneous translations and false interpretations of the long religious history of mankind. The dogma of virginity and immoral conception, as we have said, is one of the main dogmas on which Christianity is based. This dogma claims that a virgin gave birth to the Messiah Jesus Christ, through miraculous and blameless conception in which God Himself participated through the Holy Spirit, and thanks to the supernatural act appeared to the world and the Son of God. This so basic dogma in Christianity is written in the Matthew Gospel as follows: „The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”) – (Matthew 1:23). Thus the Christian religion “proves” one of its main dogmas, referring to a text in the Book of Isaiah (the prophet Yeshaiahu Ben Amotz) in which the prophet prophesied the immaculate conception of Jesus Christ: „Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14). At first glance, there is no difference, but in fact only one word that is specifically altered changes the whole meaning not only of the text but also of the Christian dogma as a whole. The word that is written in the Christian New Testament is the Greek parthenos (virgin), while in the original Hebrew text of Isaiah the prophet in the Old Testament is the word alma (העלמה – young woman)! This word was written initially personally by the Prophet as an alma (a young woman), who apparently is neither a virgin. It is well-known that the dogma of immaculate conception holds a great deal of the ideology of Christian doctrine. Deprived of this dogma, the doctrine is deprived of God the Son, and therefore Jesus becomes an ordinary man.

Bringing God Up to Date by John Hunt Pdf

Religion is an essential part of our humanity. We all follow some form of religion, in the original meaning of the word. But organized religion establishes definitions, boundaries and hierarchies which the founders would be amazed by. This is perhaps more true of Christianity than most other religions, due to the short life of Jesus, his sudden death, the lack of any contemporary records. His teaching about the kingdom of God is great; it could see us through our time on earth. But his followers watered it down and soon lost it altogether. It became a kingdom in heaven for the few, rather than one here and now for everyone. The Church, or Churches, that resulted became increasingly irrelevant, even a hindrance, to seeing it realized. Many will always find security and truth in the traditions that developed, and good for them. But for those who can't, for those who have given up on religion or never thought it worth considering, the original teachings are worth another look. If we could recover them and live by them, we could change ourselves and the world for the better. We could bring God up to date.

Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe Pdf

Dr. Faustus is a great Elizabethan tragedy by Christopher Marlow originally published in 1600. The story is based on an earlier anonymous classic German legend involving worldly ambition, black magic and surrender to the devil. It remains one of the most famous plays of the English Renaissance. Dr. John Faustus, a brilliant, well-respected German doctor grows dissatisfied with the limits of human knowledge - logic, medicine, law, and religion, and decides that he has learned all that can be learned by conventional means. What is left for him, he thinks, but magic. His friends instruct him in the black arts, and he begins his new career as a magician by summoning up Mephastophilis, a devil. Despite Mephastophilis’s warnings about the horrors of hell, Faustus tells the devil to return to his master, Lucifer, with an offer of Faustus’s soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service from Mephastophilis. On the final night before the expiration of the twenty-four years, Faustus is overcome by fear and remorse. He begs for mercy, but it is too late. At midnight, a host of devils appears and carries his soul off to hell. Marlowe’s dramatic interpretation of the Faust legend is a theatrical masterpiece. With immense poetic skill, and psychological insight that greatly influenced the works of William Shakespeare and other dramatists, Dr. Faustus combines soaring poetry, psychological depth, and grand stage spectacle. Marlowe created powerful scenes that invest the work with tragic dignity, among them the doomed man’s calling upon Christ to save him and his ultimate rejection of salvation for the embrace of Helen of Troy.
