A Trip to Manitoba (Classic Reprint) by James Trow Pdf

Excerpt from A Trip to Manitoba Having secured our tickets, we left the Toronto Union station, which certainly is a misnomer, for evidently no unanimity among the various lines of railway exists. The trains of the Northern and great Western pass the Union Station east and west, and yet you are put to the expense and inconvenience of hiring a conveyance to remove your baggage from one station to another, returning upon the same track. Such a feeling should not exist. The differ ent companies should work more harmoniously together. The public who pay for the construction of these great thoroughfares have rights which should be respected. Love in Manitoba (Classic Reprint) by E. Antony Wharton Gill Pdf

Excerpt from Love in Manitoba All is well with his mother, for she 18 with God, and the Herr Pastor bared his head. Walking with uncertain steps as in a dream Christian made his way to his home - passed through the little living-room - raised with careful stillness the latch of the room beyond. That vision of his departed happiness was never far from the mirror of Christian's soul, in the long years to comebas he steered the course of his little schooner under the starlit heavens, as he paced the deck of the mighty steamer that bore him to the great solitudes of the west, as he watched that summer evening, the sun smiling behind the spruce-clad hills, beyond the Otter Lake. Clear to-night, as on that fatal night twenty years ago - the wood fire on the hearth casting a flickering light on the tear-stained face of little Ludwig, sleeping in his little cot, and a little table standing by the white covered bed, and there in deeper, calmer, purer rest than sleep Olga. One hand rested upon the white coverlet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thirteen Years on the Prairies by John Pyne Pennefather Pdf

Excerpt from Thirteen Years on the Prairies: From Winnipeg to Cold Lake After resting there a few days, we started on the long railway journey to Winnipeg. At, that time this was accomplished by several lines, partly running through United States territory, necessitating various changes. Though' travelling even then was fairly comfortable, it was far different from the luxurious ease with which the journey can be now accomplished, entirely on Canadian soil, in the magnificent cars and under the perfect service of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which spans this vast continent from ocean to ocean. Sounding Thunder by Brian D. McInnes Pdf

Francis Pegahmagabow (1889–1952), a member of the Ojibwe nation, was born in Shawanaga, Ontario. Enlisting at the onset of the First World War, he became the most decorated Canadian Indigenous soldier for bravery and the most accomplished sniper in North American military history. After the war, Pegahmagabow settled in Wasauksing, Ontario. He served his community as both chief and councillor and belonged to the Brotherhood of Canadian Indians, an early national Indigenous political organization. Francis proudly served a term as Supreme Chief of the National Indian Government, retiring from office in 1950. Francis Pegahmagabow’s stories describe many parts of his life and are characterized by classic Ojibwe narrative. They reveal aspects of Francis’s Anishinaabe life and worldview. Interceding chapters by Brian McInnes provide valuable cultural, spiritual, linguistic, and historic insights that give a greater context and application for Francis’s words and world. Presented in their original Ojibwe as well as in English translation, the stories also reveal a rich and evocative relationship to the lands and waters of Georgian Bay. In "Sounding Thunder", Brian McInnes provides new perspective on Pegahmagabow and his experience through a unique synthesis of Ojibwe oral history, historical record, and Pegahmagabow family stories.

A Two-Spirit Journey by Ma-Nee Chacaby Pdf

A compelling, harrowing, but ultimately uplifting story of resilience and self-discovery. "A Two-Spirit Journey" is Ma-Nee Chacaby’s extraordinary account of her life as an Ojibwa-Cree lesbian. From her early, often harrowing memories of life and abuse in a remote Ojibwa community riven by poverty and alcoholism, Chacaby’s story is one of enduring and ultimately overcoming the social, economic, and health legacies of colonialism. As a child, Chacaby learned spiritual and cultural traditions from her Cree grandmother and trapping, hunting, and bush survival skills from her Ojibwa stepfather. She also suffered physical and sexual abuse by different adults, and in her teen years became alcoholic herself. At twenty, Chacaby moved to Thunder Bay with her children to escape an abusive marriage. Abuse, compounded by racism, continued, but Chacaby found supports to help herself and others. Over the following decades, she achieved sobriety; trained and worked as an alcoholism counsellor; raised her children and fostered many others; learned to live with visual impairment; and came out as a lesbian. In 2013, Chacaby led the first gay pride parade in Thunder Bay. Ma-Nee Chacaby has emerged from hardship grounded in faith, compassion, humour, and resilience. Her memoir provides unprecedented insights into the challenges still faced by many Indigenous people.

Dictionary of Manitoba Biography by J.M. Bumsted Pdf

Manitoba has been at the crossroads of many of the important debates and events in Canadian history. From the early fur trade to the Riel Rebellion to the Winnipeg General Strike, Manitobans have frequently played crucial roles in Canadian and sometimes world history. Until now, there has been no comprehensive, contemporary source for information on the many Manitobans who have left their mark on history and society. Dictionary of Manitoba Biography fills this gap, with biographical sketches of over 1700 Manitobans who have made an impact in politics, the arts, sports, commerce, agriculture, and society. It is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and general readers interested in Canadian history. Particular emphasis has been placed on reflecting Manitoba's ethnic and social diversity, and on including men and women who were notable in their own day but have now been forgotten. Many entries also refer the reader to additional references for further reading. More than a reference book, Dictionary of Manitoba Biography is also a fascinating work of history in its own right, which presents the full and colourful scope of over 300 years of people in Manitoba history and social life, from premiers and mayors to nightclub owners and sports heroes.

The Last Wilderness by Peter Browning Pdf

North of the sixtieth parallel, east of Great Slave Lake, and west of Hudson Bay is a vast sweep of pure, unspoiled land. It is the least accessible region in North America, a wilderness that has been seen by few and traversed by fewer still, and is inhabited by no one. There is only the land, carved and molded by the glaciers: scoured boulders, ridges and low hills of white sand, the sparkling waters of myriad lakes. In 1964 Peter Browning and John Blunt went by canoe from northern Saskatchewan to the village of Snowdrift on Great Slave Lake. They started in early June, and traveled 600 miles on lakes and rivers and across agonizing portages through a land devoid of other people. They saw no one else for 74 days. During their long journey they suffered storms, hordes of insects, exhausting labor and hunger. They were rewarded by being totally independent amidst the beauty and serenity of the last great wilderness in North America. Included in this modern odyssey are 59 striking photographs of the virgin lakes and forests and tundra of the Northwest Territories. -- back cover.

The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Literature by Cynthia Conchita Sugars Pdf

The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Literature provides a broad-ranging introduction to some of the key critical fields, genres, and periods in Canadian literary studies. The essays in this volume, written by prominent theorists in the field, reflect the plurality of critical perspectives, regional and historical specializations, and theoretical positions that constitute the field of Canadian literary criticism across a range of genres and historical periods. The volume provides a dynamic introduction to current areas of critical interest, including (1) attention to the links between the literary and the public sphere, encompassing such topics as neoliberalism, trauma and memory, citizenship, material culture, literary prizes, disability studies, literature and history, digital cultures, globalization studies, and environmentalism or ecocriticism; (2) interest in Indigenous literatures and settler-Indigenous relations; (3) attention to multiple diasporic and postcolonial contexts within Canada; (4) interest in the institutionalization of Canadian literature as a discipline; (5) a turn towards book history and literary history, with a renewed interest in early Canadian literature; (6) a growing interest in articulating the affective character of the literary - including an interest in affect theory, mourning, melancholy, haunting, memory, and autobiography. The book represents a diverse array of interests -- from the revival of early Canadian writing, to the continued interest in Indigenous, regional, and diasporic traditions, to more recent discussions of globalization, market forces, and neoliberalism. It includes a distinct section dedicated to Indigenous literatures and traditions, as well as a section that reflects on the discipline of Canadian literature as a whole.
