Phantom Parks by Donald Richard Searle Pdf

Phantom Parks is a hard-hitting and passionate examination of why our national parks are failing to protect the wild - and what must be done to reverse this trend. Having travelled throughout most of Canada`s national park system, Rick Searle concludes that there is no one single cause to the current ecological crisis, rather it is about a slow death of a thousand cuts. The wild within our parks is being threatened and drained away by a variety of causes: the lobby for growth and development of park facilities to accommodate ever-increasing demands for recreation and tourism; adjacent land use such as farming, logging and mining, which contribute to the parks becoming islands of extinction; global pressures such as acid rain, climate change and the long-range transportation of pollutants. There are solutions to the crisis, however. Maintaining the wildness of the national parks now requires radical changes in the way we perceive and use them. There is hope, but we must act quickly. Phantom Parks is a book we can only ignore at our peril. (2000)

National Parks in Crisis by Wendy Hart Beckman Pdf

Mention "national parks," and most people think of majestic mountains, bears, forest fires, and spouting geysers. But the national park system includes much more -- the Statue of Liberty, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, and the Grand Canyon. The parks were established to keep areas of natural and cultural significance "unimpaired for future generations." In National Parks in Crisis: Debating the Issues, Wendy Hart Beckman explores historical issues, from the building of dams to the control of wildlife. And she outlines the questions facing the parks today: How can pollution be controlled? What are the interests of different cultural groups? How can people enjoy the parks without spoiling the experience -- for today's visitors and for the visitors of tomorrow? Book jacket.

America's National Parks and Their Keepers by Ronald A. Foresta Pdf

First Published in 2011. This book is a study of an expanding National Park System; it is also a study of the bureaucracy that shaped it, how it grew, and the stresses it faces. As Dr. Foresta shows, the Park Service is no stranger to controversy and change. One of the Service's strengths has been its pragmatism and adaptability, but current guidelines are hard to come by and the decisions of the future will be neither simple nor easy. This study is valuable not only for its analysis but for the informed, revealing picture it presents of an agency and a system that have enriched the lives of countless citizens and visitors to this country.

Crisis Management Challenges in Kaliningrad by Eugene Krasnov,Anna Karpenko Pdf

Crisis Management Challenges in Kaliningrad captures the evolving nature of the types of crises faced by a society as it transforms and evolves. Once the westernmost bastion of the Soviet Union and now the westernmost part of the Russian Federation, the Kaliningrad Oblast remains cut off from direct land communication with mainland Russia and provides a condensed, real-life laboratory in which to observe changing political, technological and economic priorities in Post-Soviet society. Expert contributors from the region chart the tensions, problems and opportunities created by the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991 and examine the change in status and situation of the Kaliningrad Oblast. By looking at a selection of economic, environmental and social crises a historical link between the Soviet and Post-Soviet eras is formed and rigorously examined.

Managing the Climate Crisis by Jonathan Barnett,Matthijs Bouw Pdf

Natural disasters from heat waves to coastal and river flooding will inevitably become worse because of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. Managing them is possible, but planners, designers, and policymakers need to advance adaptation and preventative measures now. Managing the Climate Crisis: Designing and Building for Floods, Heat, Drought and Wildfire by design and planning experts Jonathan Barnett and Matthijs Bouw is a practical guide to addressing this urgent national security problem. Barnett and Bouw draw from the latest scientific findings and include many recent, real-world examples to illustrate how to manage seven climate-related threats: flooding along coastlines, river flooding, flash floods from extreme rain events, drought, wildfire, long periods of high heat, and food shortages.

National Parks Beyond the Nation by Adrian Howkins,Jared Orsi,Mark Fiege Pdf

“The idea of a national park was an American invention of historic consequences marking the beginning of a worldwide movement,” the U.S. National Park Service asserts in its 2006 Management Policies. National Parks beyond the Nation brings together the work of fifteen scholars and writers to reveal the tremendous diversity of the global national park experience—an experience sometimes influencing, sometimes influenced by, and sometimes with no reference whatever to the United States. Writer and historian Wallace Stegner once called national parks “America’s best idea.” The contributors to this volume use that exceptionalist claim as a starting point for thinking about an international history of national parks. They explore the historical interactions and influences—intellectual, political, and material—within and between national park systems in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia, Antarctica, Brazil, and other countries. What is the role of science in the history of these preserves? Of politics? What purposes do they serve: Conservation? Education? Reverence toward nature? Tourist pleasure? People have thought differently about national parks at different times and in different places; and neat physical boundaries have been disrupted by wandering animals, human movements, the spread of disease, and climate change. Viewing parks around the world, at various scales and across national frontiers, these essays offer a panoptic view of the common and contrasting cultural and environmental features of national parks worldwide. If national parks are, as Stegner said, “absolutely American,” they are no less part of the world at large. National Parks beyond the Nation tells us as much about the multifarious and changing ideas of nature and culture as about the framing of those ideas in geographic, temporal, and national terms.

American Green by Stephen A. Germic Pdf

In this work of interdisciplinary scholarship, Stephen A. Germic reveals how America's first parks, both urban and 'wilderness,' were created and organized to mitigate the most threatening social and economic crises in the nineteenth century outside of the Civil War. Germic analyzes the intentionally disguised relationship between the constructed 'nature' of Central Park, Yosemite, and Yellowstone and the expanding but crisis-prone capitalist state. American Green demonstrates how the fundamental function of these parks was economic and political—in the service of maintaining a consensus regarding national identity. The organization and control of 'natural' space, Germic argues, is inseparable from its function as a capitalist instrument. This instrumentalism served not only to define, constitute, and segregate social groups, but also to promote racial and ethnic identifications above those based on class interest. Providing a fresh insight into United States labor, cultural and environmental history, this book is an important contribution to our understanding of American parks and the complex meaning of American public space.
