Natural Philosophy by Le Roy C. Cooley Pdf

Excerpt from Natural Philosophy: For Common and High Schools The great aim of this little book is to present the most elementary facts of Natural. Philosophy, in such a way as to exercise the child constantly in observing phenomena and in drawing inferences from what he observes. Whenever a child is old enough to ask such questions, as, "What makes the thunder," or, "Where does the rain come from," or to exclaim "How pretty the clouds are this evening," it is old enough to begin the study of natural philosophy. When such questions are asked the mind is awake to see the phenomena of nature, and is ready to receive instruction. They show the presence of a desire to know, and the absence of power to learn without assistance; and in this way they lead us to believe that the time has come when the work of instruction should begin. Moreover, the study of natural philosophy is easy, and interesting to young pupils, because, when properly presented, it brings new sights to the eye, and new sounds the ear, in a way to be especially pleasant to children. The simplest experiments awaken enthusiasm in the mind of a child, and such as be may he able to repeat by himself are the source of the greatest delight. Natural Philosophy by William James Rolfe Pdf

Excerpt from Natural Philosophy: For High Schools and Academies The authors were led to prepare this series mainly that they might provide themselves with text-books containing an elementary view of the present state of the Physical Sciences. The general plan and method of the Course were worked out by Mr. Gillet, and thoroughly tested in the class-room by oral teaching, before there was any thought of publishing the books. The authors felt, from experience, that the elementary textbooks on Physics now in use are, as a class, deficient in two important particulars. First, they are sadly behind the times; and, secondly, they fail to give any systematic development of leading principles. A great revolution has taken place during the last twenty-five years in the departments of Chemistry, Electricity, and Heat In Chemistry this revolution has been so complete that the present theories of the science are currently known as "Modern Chemistry." The hypothesis of electric fluids has been swept away, and Heat has been shown to be a mode of molecular motion. It is but recently that Helmholtz has given the correct explanation of the formation of the vowel sounds, of resultants, and of dissonance; and that Tyndall and others have investigated the subject of sounding and sensitive flames. In Optics, too, the cause of long and short sightedness, and the way in which the eye adjusts itself for near and distant objects, have been correctly understood only within a few years. In Astronomy, also, the analysis of solar and stellar light by means of the spectroscope has led to discoveries of the highest interest; while recent investigation has thrown much light upon the nature of the photosphere and spots of the sun. Popularizing Science and Technology in the European Periphery, 1800–2000 by Dr Agustí Nieto-Galan,Dr Enrique Perdiguero,Dr Faidra Papanelopoulou Pdf

The vast majority of European countries have never had a Newton, Pasteur or Einstein. Therefore a historical analysis of their scientific culture must be more than the search for great luminaries. Studies of the ways science and technology were communicated to the public in countries of the European periphery can provide a valuable insight into the mechanisms of the appropriation of scientific ideas and technological practices across the continent. The contributors to this volume each take as their focus the popularization of science in countries on the margins of Europe, who in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries may be perceived to have had a weak scientific culture. A variety of scientific genres and forums for presenting science in the public sphere are analysed, including botany and women, teaching and popularizing physics and thermodynamics, scientific theatres, national and international exhibitions, botanical and zoological gardens, popular encyclopaedias, popular medicine and astronomy, and genetics in the press. Each topic is situated firmly in its historical and geographical context, with local studies of developments in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden. Popularizing Science and Technology in the European Periphery provides us with a fascinating insight into the history of science in the public sphere and will contribute to a better understanding of the circulation of scientific knowledge.
