Natural Visions by Finis Dunaway Pdf

Walden Pond. The Grand Canyon.Yosemite National Park. Throughout the twentieth century, photographers and filmmakers created unforgettable images of these and other American natural treasures. Many of these images, including the work of Ansel Adams, continue to occupy a prominent place in the American imagination. Making these representations, though, was more than a purely aesthetic project. In fact, portraying majestic scenes and threatened places galvanized concern for the environment and its protection. Natural Visions documents through images the history of environmental reform from the Progressive era to the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, showing the crucial role the camera played in the development of the conservation movement. In Natural Visions, Finis Dunaway tells the story of how visual imagery—such as wilderness photographs, New Deal documentary films, and Sierra Club coffee-table books—shaped modern perceptions of the natural world. By examining the relationship between the camera and environmental politics through detailed studies of key artists and activists, Dunaway captures the emotional and spiritual meaning that became associated with the American landscape. Throughout the book, he reveals how photographers and filmmakers adapted longstanding traditions in American culture—the Puritan jeremiad, the romantic sublime, and the frontier myth—to literally picture nature as a place of grace for the individual and the nation. Beautifully illustrated with photographs by Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, and a host of other artists, Natural Visions will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in American cultural history, the visual arts, and environmentalism.

Natural Light by Anonim Pdf

From frosted mountain peaks to the low-lying farmlands of the Fraser Valley, from the Sahara-like sand dunes of Farwell Canyon to the dripping, moss-bedecked rainforests of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia is a province of startling contrasts. Its beauty has inspired many photo collections, but none quite like David Nunuk's. Natural Light is a spectacular, jaw-dropping collection of Nunuk's best photographs of British Columbia in all its moods, accompanied by his often wry observations about the settings and his unorthodox methods of capturing them. In the tradition of Wade Davis, Nunuk writes about his experience hiking into an area, planning a shot and digging in patiently until the light and weather co-operate to make the perfect picture. He becomes intimate with the subtle variants in a landscape over an hour, a day, a month or a minute before he captures the images with his camera. His pictures are composed with a naturalist's eye for scientific detail and an outdoorsman's affection and respect for nature. From the warm Mediterranean tones of an Okanagan vineyard to the crystalline twinkle of an ice cave, the striking radiance of Natural Light makes this luxuriously produced, oversize coffee-table book the perfect gift for lovers of outdoor photography, naturalists, armchair travellers or anyone who wants to see BC in a dramatic new--and entirely natural--light.

New Visions of Nature by Martin A. M. Drenthen,F.W. Jozef Keulartz,James Proctor Pdf

"New Visions of Nature" focuses on the emergence of these new visions of complex nature in three domains. The first selection of essays reflects public visions of nature, that is, nature as it is experienced, encountered, and instrumentalized by diverse publics. The second selection zooms in on micro nature and explores the world of contemporary genomics. The final section returns to the macro world and discusses the ethics of place in present-day landscape philosophy and environmental ethics. The contributions to this volume explore perceptual and conceptual boundaries between the human and the natural, or between an ‘out there’ and ‘in here.’ They attempt to specify how nature has been publicly and genomically constructed, known and described through metaphors and re-envisioned in terms of landscape and place. By parsing out and rendering explicit these divergent views, the volume asks for a re-thinking of our relationship with nature.

A Scientific Inquiry Into the Nature of God, the Spiritual, and Near Death Experiences by Stephen Blaha Pdf

Who is God? What is His nature? Is there a scientific approach to understanding God? Can we apply modern scientific thinking to God in the same way that theologians apply classical reasoning to God? Are there spiritual phenomena? Can we rationally analyze them? How do we interpret the apparently spiritual nature of Near Death Experiences? Can we explain how a blind person undergoing a Near Death Experience "sees" the operating table with his/her mind and can describe the people there afterwards? All of these questions are addressed in a clear straightforward way in this well-written book. A profound book that will appeal to thoughtful readers.

In Disguise by John O'Loughlin Pdf

If John O'Loughlin is 'In Disguise' here it's because, these days, he does not see himself primarily as a poet but, rather, as a philosopher, if a self-taught one, who once wrote poems, many of which were of a philosophical order and thus an alternative or formative approach to his philosophy-proper. The 180 or so poems collected together here are all readerly, or capable of being read, as opposed, like the bulk of Mr O'Loughlin's abstract poetry, to being contemplated (because non-readerly), and have accordingly been described as verse (whether 'rhymed' or 'free') to distinguish them from anything abstract, or non-readerly. 'Lyric' might suffice as a more conventional description, but, frankly, that would hardly apply to the majority of the poems in this collection which, as stated, are distinctly philosophical and the product, in consequence, of a disguised philosopher, a philosopher in disguise.

Trees by John O'Loughlin Pdf

Despite the seeming simplicity of its title, TREES is anything but simple, since arguably the deepest and most politically radical of all John O'Loughlin's volumes of poetry, extending beyond as well as summing up earlier themes with an ideological conviction that points towards a whole new approach to culture and, hence, civilization.

Visions of Nature by Riyan J. G. van den Born,W. T. de Groot,Rob H. J. Lenders Pdf

"Visions of nature" are the ideas that people hold of what nature is and how we should relate to it. These visions are important for the design of democratically grounded landscape and nature policies. These contributions were presented at an expert meeting at Radboud University, June 2001
