Near-earth Electromagnetic Environment and Natural Hazards Disturbances by Zeren Zhima,Angelo De Santis,Mirko Piersanti,Xuhui Shen, Chao Xiong ,Lin Jian Pdf

Natural hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis, have threatened human communities throughout recorded history. Scientists still face a long-term challenge to reveal the natural hazards' preparation process and precisely predict their occurrences. With space technology development, in the early 1980s, some satellites recorded abnormal electromagnetic emissions, plasma density irregularities, and energetic particle precipitations over active seismic fault zones, volcanic belts, or tsunamis coast. Since then, continuous efforts have been paid to the rock-rupture-processing experiment, ground-space comparative studies. Especially for earthquake science, the electromagnetic precursors might be the most promising tool for the short-term (timescale of hours, days, and weeks) earthquake prediction. In late 2004, France launched the DEMETER (Detection of Electromagnetic (EM) Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) satellite, which successfully operated from 2004 to 2010. In Febr. 2018, China launched the first seismo-electromagnetism satellite (China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, CSES) aimed for earthquake monitoring from space.

Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Space Studies Board Pdf

We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space (National Academies Press, 2018) provides detailed guidance on how relevant federal agencies can ensure that the United States receives the maximum benefit from its investments in Earth observations from space, while operating within realistic cost constraints. This short booklet, designed to be accessible to the general public, provides a summary of the key ideas and recommendations from the full decadal survey report.

An Assessment of Natural Hazards and Disasters in Canada by David Etkin,C.E. Haque,Gregory R. Brooks Pdf

The problems and issues of natural hazards and disasters, both globally and in Canada, are becoming increasingly important since the costs of extreme natural events have been escalating, and significant vulnerabilities exist in Canadian society. Without thoughtful and effective mitigation, these costs and human suffering are likely to continue to increase. An assessment of knowledge, research, and practice in risk, hazards and disasters fields is a fundamental step towards the goal of prevention and mitigation. This book on natural hazards and disasters in Canada is the first comprehensive interdisciplinary publication on this subject, and is the result of a national assessment on this topic. A variety of papers from the physical and social sciences explores both the risks associated with these hazards, and adaptive strategies that can be used to reduce those risks. Audience: This excellent collection of papers is intended for academics, professionals and practitioners involved in hazard reduction activities who wish to obtain a better understanding of Canadian natural hazards.

A Practical Introduction to Homeland Security by Bruce Oliver Newsome,Jack A. Jarmon Pdf

This text provides students with a practical introduction to the concepts, structure, politics, law, hazards, threats, and practices of homeland security everywhere, focusing on US “homeland security,” Canadian “public safety,” and European “domestic security.” It is a conceptual and practical textbook, not a theoretical work. It is focused on the knowledge and skills that will allow the reader to understand how homeland security is and should be practiced. Globalization, population growth, migration, technology, aging infrastructure, and the simple trend to higher expectations are making homeland security more challenging. Yes, homeland security really is a global problem. The hyperconnectivity of today’s world has reduced the capacity of the United States to act unilaterally or to solve homeland risks from within the borders alone. Newsome and Jarmon explain the relevant concepts, the structural authorities and responsibilities that policymakers struggle with and within which practitioners must work, the processes that practitioners and professionals choose between or are obliged to use, the actual activities, and the end-states and outputs of these activities. Moreover, this book presents the concept of homeland security as an evolving experience rather than an artifact of life since 2001. It is a profession that requires some forming from the ground up as well as the top down.

Extreme Events and Natural Hazards by A. Surjalal Sharma,Armin Bunde,Vijay P. Dimri,Daniel N. Baker Pdf

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 196. Extreme Events and Natural Hazards: The Complexity Perspective examines recent developments in complexity science that provide a new approach to understanding extreme events. This understanding is critical to the development of strategies for the prediction of natural hazards and mitigation of their adverse consequences. The volume is a comprehensive collection of current developments in the understanding of extreme events. The following critical areas are highlighted: understanding extreme events, natural hazard prediction and development of mitigation strategies, recent developments in complexity science, global change and how it relates to extreme events, and policy sciences and perspective. With its overarching theme, Extreme Events and Natural Hazards will be of interest and relevance to scientists interested in nonlinear geophysics, natural hazards, atmospheric science, hydrology, oceanography, tectonics, and space weather.
