Neighbors, Strangers, Witches, and Culture-Heroes by Susan Rasmussen Pdf

This book examines alleged “superhuman” powers predominantly associated with smith/artisans in five African societies. It discusses their ritual and social roles, mythico-histories, symbols surrounding their art, and changing relationships between these specialists and their patrons. Needed but also feared, these smith/artisans work in traditionally hereditary occupations and in stratified but negotiable relationships with their rural patron families. Many of them now also work for new customers in an expanding market economy, which is still characterized by personal, face-to-face interactions. Rasmussen maintains that a framework integrating anthropological theories of witchcraft, alterity, symbolism, and power is fundamental to understanding local accusations and tensions in these relationships. She also argues that it is critical to deconstruct and disentangle guilt, blame, and envy—concepts that are often conflated in anthropology at the expense of falsely accused “witch” figures. The first portion of this book is an ethnographic analysis of smith/artisans in Tuareg society, and draws on primary source data from this author’s long-term social/cultural anthropological field research in Tuareg (Kel Tamajaq) communities of northern Niger and Mali. The latter portion of the book is a cross-cultural comparison, and it re-analyzes the Tuareg case, drawing on secondary data on ritual powers and smith/artisans in four other African societies: the Amhara of Ethiopia, the Bidan (Moors) of Mauritania, the Kapsiki of Cameroon, and the Mande of southern Mali. In the concluding analysis, there is discussion of similarities and differences between these cases, the social consequences of ritual knowledge and power in each community, and their wider implications for anthropology of religion, human rights, and African studies.

Sunlight by Hugh Anthony Levine Pdf

“How odd, she reflected, to need to protect ourselves against something we cannot live without, the sun; something millions of miles away yet can harm us. Even kill us . . .” This innovatively crafted novel tracks the lives of a girl and boy who as next-door neighbors and lifelong friends confront sunlight in a way that wins the attention of the federal government at its highest levels and impacts modern aviation. Both of them face adversities threatening but not derailing their life quests, while readers take a fact-driven flight with them that begins in a tiny hamlet in rural New Jersey and touches down in the Colorado Rockies, war-torn Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Arizona, Maryland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Oval Office of the President of the United States. Sunlight spans the half-century-plus from 1946 to 2001, recounting real events of that tumultuous era through fictional characters so realistic and credible that readers may need to remind themselves they are holding a novel. Shining throughout is the author’s skill, honed during decades as a trial lawyer, at weaving an engrossing plot tapestry threaded with flying both in combat and for sport, as well as dreams and romance, success and tragedy, triumph and misgivings, lessons both taught and learned.

Judaism Is About Love by Shai Held Pdf

A profound, startling new understanding of Jewish life, illuminating the forgotten heart of Jewish theology and practice: love. A dramatic misinterpretation of the Jewish tradition has shaped the history of the West: Christianity is the religion of love, and Judaism the religion of law. In the face of centuries of this widespread misrepresentation, Rabbi Shai Held—one of the most important Jewish thinkers in America today—recovers the heart of the Jewish tradition, offering the radical and moving argument that love belongs as much to Judaism as it does to Christianity. Blending intellectual rigor, a respect for tradition and the practices of a living Judaism, and a commitment to the full equality of all people, Held seeks to reclaim Judaism as it authentically is. He shows that love is foundational and constitutive of true Jewish faith, animating the singular Jewish perspective on injustice and protest, grace, family life, responsibilities to our neighbors and even our enemies, and chosenness. Ambitious and revelatory, Judaism Is About Love illuminates the true essence of Judaism—an act of restoration from within.

Strangers, Neighbors, Friends by Kelly James Clark,Aziz Abu Sarah,Nancy Fuchs Kreimer Pdf

From 9/11 to Israel-Palestine to ISIS, the fear of the religious stranger is palpable. Conservative talk show hosts and liberal public intellectuals are united in blaming religion, usually Islam, for the world’s instability. If religion is part of the problem, it can and should be part of the solution. Strangers, Neighbors, Friends—co-authored by a Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew—aims to inform and inspire Abraham’s children that God calls us to extend our love beyond family and fellow believer to the stranger.

God Gets Everything God Wants by Katie Hays Pdf

A gospel of hope, inclusion, and defiance If God gets everything God wants, and if what God wants is you, can anything stand in God’s way? Too many Christians have been taught that core aspects of who they are—their gender, their sexual orientation, their politics, their skepticism—prevent God from loving them fully. For these individuals, church has been a painful experience of exclusion, despite the reality that Jesus was the embodiment of God’s radical inclusion. Katie Hays invites weary Christians, former Christians, and the Christ-curious to take another look at God through the testimony of our biblical ancestors and to reimagine the church as a community of beautiful, broken, and burdened people doing their best to grow into their baptisms together. Hays insists that yes, God does get everything God wants, and—even better—we’re invited to want what God wants, too, and want it “more and more and more, until life feels abundant and eternal and delicious and drunken with possibility.” This is a message of stouthearted faith anchored in wonder—not false certainty. Atheists are welcome. Those who feel uneasy inside a church are welcome. Those still angry at other Christians are welcome. Because no matter what we’ve experienced, the God who still adores this world is the God of hope, inclusion, and defiance of the powers that be. And for those who are willing to collaborate in “the painstaking work of examining our Christian faith and sorting it out—the good stuff from the harmful stuff, the stuff with integrity from the stuff we simply inherited from family or church or . . . the cultural air we’re breathing”—there await life-giving possibilities found nowhere else.

Agape and Hesed-Ahava by David L. Goicoechea Pdf

Goicoechea presents his third volume in a series on agape. In this book he shows in four ways how the agape of Jesus fulfills the ahava and hesed of the Hebrew Bible. First, he shows existentially how he learned and lived this for six years in a Benedictine Minor Seminary and then for three years in a Sulpician Major Seminary. Second, he demonstrates how ahava or our love for God and neighbor and hesed or God's love for us develop through the Hebrew Bible. Goicoechea argues that St. Matthew's Gospel explains the fulfilment of ahava and hesed with Jesus' agape. He concludes by drawing attention to how Levinas and Derrida, two Jewish postmodern philosophers, treat Jewish and Christian love.

Brain Magick by Philip H. Farber Pdf

How powerful, seductive, or mythical would you like your life to be? The ultimate goal of invocation is to infuse your life with more excitement, purpose, and passion. Recent discoveries in neuroscience suggest that the magical practices of evocation and invocation are based in natural brain functions—this book is the first to present a theory of magick based on the new research. Brain Magick is packed full of exercises (more than 70) that illustrate the principles of neuroscience and magick, and has everything you need to quickly develop skill in the art of invocation. This easily practiced form of ritual technology is appropriate for complete novices and magical adepts alike. If you are familiar with any kind of magick—Wiccan, Thelemic, Golden Dawn, Goetic, Chaos, or Hermetic—this book will provide opportunities to consider your practice in a new light, and take your magical experiences to a new level. Even if you've never practiced any magick before, you'll be able to start immediately. Praise: "Farber begins by asking, 'How much do you want your own story to rock?' then with an exuberant 'Woohoo' proceeds to hand us sane and practical tools and exercises to become a true superstar in the only world that really matters ... our own brain.
