Nelson And His Captains: Sketches Of Famous Seamen [Illustrated Edition] by William Henry Fitchett Pdf

Includes 11 portraits NELSON is the only figure amongst the great sea-captains of the Napoleonic war of which the human memory keeps any vivid image. The iron face of Jervis looks out on us for a moment from the smoke of St. Vincent, gloomy, stern, and cynical, and then vanishes! Collingwood, who led down on the Franco-Spanish line at Trafalgar in a fashion so stately, and in advance even of Nelson, and who lies in the great crypt of St. Paul’s beside his famous chief, is, for the general reader, little more than a name. Cornwallis, the hero of the tireless and memorable blockade of Brest, is scarcely even a name. Who remembers aught of Barham, the white-haired veteran—sea-dog, as well as sea-lord—who devised, almost off-hand, the counter-stroke that shattered Napoleon’s sea strategy and made Trafalgar possible? Nelson is the one sea-captain of the Great War who has stamped his image imperishably on the imagination of the English-speaking race. Whether, indeed, Nelson was in a technical sense “the greatest sailor since the world began,” need not be discussed. In the art of taking care of ship and canvas in rough weather some of his own captains probably surpassed him. In the genius that wielded fleets he was supreme! And in the great drama of Napoleonic wars there are —for the man in the street—only three supreme names, that of Napoleon himself, of Wellington, and of Nelson, and Nelson was as great on sea as his two rivals in fame were great on land. This work is an account, not so much of Nelson as of his captains—the men of the Nile and of Trafalgar. “They,” said Nelson, of a group of his captains, “are my children; they serve in my school, and I glory in them.” And we cannot understand the “school” without some clear mental image of the master who stamped his impress so deeply on it.

Nelson and His Captains: Sketches of Famous Seamen by W. Fitchett Pdf

"They are my children; they serve in my school, and I glory in them" - Nelson (of his captains). Nelson's personality, his fame, his triumphs and weaknesses, are well known. Less well known are the lives of his fellow naval commanders who were his comrades and friends. Nelson and his Captains is a biography that steps back from one man to look at the people that supported him and leant him strength. These are the people Nelson owed his life to, and who in turn owed their lives to him. Among the eleven short biographies are: Sir Edward Pellew who famously defeated vicious Algerian pirates. Sir Thomas Hardy, who was Nelson's Flag Captain at the fateful Battle of Trafalgar. Sir James Saumarez whose relationship with Nelson was often tense. Captain Edward Riou who died serving with Nelson on an attack on the Danish fleet. Nelson and his Captains brings together a wide variety of sources, including excerpts from letters and captain's logs to create a clear and vibrant history from the Golden Age of Sail. Praise for Nelson and his Captains 'Thoughtfully and enthusiastically written in a simple yet pleasing, vivacious style' - The American Historical Review W.H. Fitchett (1841-1928) was a minister, educator and writer, who wrote a column for the Spectator magazine. He published works of fiction and non-fiction, including a four-volume collection How England Saved Europe in 1909.

Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ...rolling deeply, could not open her main-deck ports. But she shot so fiercely with her upper-deck guns that Linois was quickly persuaded that this was no commercial-minded Indiaman, and he drew off and left the leaky, but hard-hitting Blenheim with her convoy untroubled. Troubridge's orders were to take over part of the command of Sir Edward Pellew, who was commander-in-chief in India and China; but Pellew objected to the arrangement as impolitic. The dispute was referred to the Admiralty, whose decision proved to be in favour of Pellew, and Troubridge was ordered to hoist his flag as commanderin-chief at the Cape. The battered old Blenheim, meanwhile, had been ashore in the Straits of Malacca, an experience which did not add to her seaworthiness. Her captain, Bissell, declared it to be impossible to keep her afloat till she reached the Cape; but the man who had refitted his ship at sea the day before the battle of Cape St. Vincent, and who kept the Culloden afloat after bumping for nine hours on the rocky shoal of Aboukir island, had learned to scorn sea-risks of every kind. He probably felt he could navigate a sieve to the Cape! And the Blenheim was very much in the condition of a sieve. Such was the confidence in Troubridge's seamanship, however, that many Indian officials returning to England sought berths eagerly in even the leaky and groaning Blenheim, since it flew Troubridge's flag. Troubridge sailed from Madras on January 12, 1807, having under his flag the Java, & captured Dutch frigate nearly as old and unseaworthy as the Blenheim itself, and the Harrier, a brig of war. On February i, less than three weeks afterwards--when the three ships were off the coast of Madagascar--they were caught in a cyclone. The Harrier, a fine..

Nelson and His Captains by Ludovic Kennedy Pdf

Lord Nelson's brilliant naval strategy and unparalleled command gave Britain total supremacy at sea and made him a national hero. Much of his success, however, was also due to the Band of Brothers under his command; the most loyal and dedicated officers that the Royal Navy had ever seen. They included Troubridge, that dear good soul; Hardy, with whom Nelson was always in accord; Berry, his right hand; Fremantle, his staunch supporter; and Hood, gentle and unaffected. Despite their different backgrounds and outlooks, they were united in their devotion to Nelson.

Horatio Nelson's first captain was William Locker who recognised the exceptional talents of the young midshipman who was to become the most famous sailor in history. Thirty-seven years later Admiral Lord Nelson wrote to Locker 'I have been your scholar; it was you who taught me to board a Frenchman by your conduct It is you who always taught me to lay a Frenchman close and you will beat him. My only merit in my profession is being a good scholar'. Captain William Locker's career as a Sea Captain fighting the King's enemies on the high seas makes gripping reading and high drama.

The Last of Nelson's Captains (Classic Reprint) by Augustus Phillimore Pdf

Excerpt from The Last of Nelson's Captains The last of Nelson's Captains was born in 1781, entered the Navy 1793, and died in 1866. As a midshipman, he shared in Lord Howe's actions which resulted in the victor of the "First of June." He saw much active service in the West Indies, both as a midshipman and as a lieutenant, especially during the war at San Domingo. As a commander, he also had much active service in the West Indies, particularly in chasing and in cutting out the enemy's privateers. As a captain, Earl St. Vincent, describing him as "My nephew of whom I am very proud," said he had merited the esteem and regard of every officer he had served under, from his first entrance into the Navy. Lord Nelson described him as always giving him pleasure. Sir John Borlase Warren said he was a real treasure in his squadron. Sir Pulteney Malcolm said he was the best frigate captain in the service. On attaining the higher ranks of the profession, his conduct and judgment elicited the approbation and admiration of every Administration which employed him; especially when on the Coast of Greece in 1828, and during the Civil War in Portugal, 1831 to 1834.
