Neural Network Computing for the Electric Power Industry by Dejan J. Sobajic Pdf

Power system computing with neural networks is one of the fastest growing fields in the history of power system engineering. Since 1988, a considerable amount of work has been done in investigating computing capabilities of neural networks and understanding their relevance to providing efficient solutions for outstanding complex problems of the electric power industry. A principal objective of a power utility is to provide electric energy to its customers in a secure, reliable and economic manner. Toward this aim, utility personnel are engaged in a variety of activities in areas of supervisory control and monitoring, evaluation of operating conditions, operation planning and scheduling, system development, equipment testing, etc. Over the past decades significant advances have been made in the development of new concepts, design of hardware and software systems, and implementation of solid-state devices which all contributed to the steadily improving power system performance that we are experiencing today. Advanced information processing technologies played an important role in these development efforts. Members of the Special Interest Group for Power Engineering of the INNS recognized the need for bringing together leading researchers in the field of neurocomputing with experts from power utilities and manufacturing companies to assess the current state of affairs and to explore the directions of further research and practice. This book is based on The Summer Workshop on Neural Network Computing for the Electric Power Industry which brought together approximately forty specialists with backgrounds in power engineering, system operation and planning, neural network theory and AI systems design. An informal and highly inspiring atmosphere of the workshop facilitated open discussion and exchange of expertise between the participants.

Market Operations in Electric Power Systems by Mohammad Shahidehpour,Hatim Yamin,Zuyi Li Pdf

An essential overview of post-deregulation market operations inelectrical power systems Until recently the U.S. electricity industry was dominated byvertically integrated utilities. It is now evolving into adistributive and competitive market driven by market forces andincreased competition. With electricity amounting to a $200 billionper year market in the United States, the implications of thisrestructuring will naturally affect the rest of the world. Why is restructuring necessary? What are the components ofrestructuring? How is the new structure different from the oldmonopoly? How are the participants strategizing their options tomaximize their revenues? What are the market risks and how are theyevaluated? How are interchange transactions analyzed and approved?Starting with a background sketch of the industry, this hands-onreference provides insights into the new trends in power systemsoperation and control, and highlights advanced issues in thefield. Written for both technical and nontechnical professionals involvedin power engineering, finance, and marketing, this must-haveresource discusses: * Market structure and operation of electric power systems * Load and price forecasting and arbitrage * Price-based unit commitment and security constrained unitcommitment * Market power analysis and game theory applications * Ancillary services auction market design * Transmission pricing and congestion Using real-world case studies, this timely survey offers engineers, consultants, researchers, financial managers, university professorsand students, and other professionals in the industry acomprehensive review of electricity restructuring and how itsradical effects will shape the market.

Engineering Intelligent Hybrid Multi-Agent Systems by Rajiv Khosla Pdf

Engineering Intelligent Hybrid Multi-Agent Systems is about building intelligent hybrid systems. Included is coverage of applications and design concepts related to fusion systems, transformation systems and combination systems. These applications are in areas involving hybrid configurations of knowledge-based systems, case-based reasoning, fuzzy systems, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, and in knowledge discovery and data mining. Through examples and applications a synergy of these subjects is demonstrated. The authors introduce a multi-agent architectural theory for engineering intelligent associative hybrid systems. The architectural theory is described at both the task structure level and the computational level. This problem-solving architecture is relevant for developing knowledge agents and information agents. An enterprise-wide system modeling framework is outlined to facilitate forward and backward integration of systems developed in the knowledge, information, and data engineering layers of an organization. In the modeling process, software engineering aspects like agent oriented analysis, design and reuse are developed and described. Engineering Intelligent Hybrid Multi-Agent Systems is the first book in the field to provide details of a multi-agent architecture for building intelligent hybrid systems.

Models of Neurons and Perceptrons: Selected Problems and Challenges by Andrzej Bielecki Pdf

This book describes models of the neuron and multilayer neural structures, with a particular focus on mathematical models. It also discusses electronic circuits used as models of the neuron and the synapse, and analyses the relations between the circuits and mathematical models in detail. The first part describes the biological foundations and provides a comprehensive overview of the artificial neural networks. The second part then presents mathematical foundations, reviewing elementary topics, as well as lesser-known problems such as topological conjugacy of dynamical systems and the shadowing property. The final two parts describe the models of the neuron, and the mathematical analysis of the properties of artificial multilayer neural networks. Combining biological, mathematical and electronic approaches, this multidisciplinary book it useful for the mathematicians interested in artificial neural networks and models of the neuron, for computer scientists interested in formal foundations of artificial neural networks, and for the biologists interested in mathematical and electronic models of neural structures and processes.
