Covered Bridges of New England by Jeffrey E Blackman Pdf

During the nineteenth and the early part of the twentieth centuries, the erection of nearly one thousand covered bridges was recorded in New England's archives. However, the ravages of time, storms, floods, neglect, and vandals have reduced the remaining historic, authentic covered bridges to fewer than two hundred. While the majority of these bridges are in the states of Vermont and New Hampshire, wonderful examples of covered bridges can be found in all six of the New England states.

America's Covered Bridges by Terry E. Miller,Ronald G. Knapp Pdf

As many as 15,000 covered bridges were built in North America over the past 200 years. Fewer than 1,000 remain. In America's Covered Bridges, authors Terry E. Miller and Ronald G. Knapp tell the fascinating story of these bridges, how they were built, the technological breakthroughs required to construct them and above all the dedication and skill of their builders. Each wooden bridge, whether still standing or long gone, has a story to tell about the nature of America at the time—not only about its transportational needs, but the availability of materials and the technological prowess of the people who built it. Illustrated with some 550 historical and contemporary photos, paintings, and technical drawings of nearly 400 different covered bridges, America's Covered Bridges offers five readable chapters on the history, design and fate of America's covered bridges, plus related bridges in Canada. Most of the contemporary photography is by master photographer A. Chester Ong of Hong Kong. 55 photo essays on the most iconic bridges including: Cornish-Windsor Bridge between Vermont and New Hampshire Porter-Parsonsfield Bridge, Maine East Paden and West Paden (Twin Bridges), Pennsylvania Philippi Bridge, West Virginia Hortons Mill Bridge, Alabama Medora Bridge, Indiana Rock Mill Bridge, Ohio Knight's Ferry Bridge, California Perrault Bridge, Quebec, Canada Hartland Bridge, New Brunswick, Canada Over time, wooden bridges eventually gave way to ones made of iron, steel and concrete. An American icon, many covered bridges became obsolete and were replaced—others simply decayed and collapsed. Many more were swept away by natural disasters and fires. America's Covered Bridges is absolutely packed with fascinating stories and information passionately told by two leading experts on this subject. The book will be of tremendous interest to anyone interested in American history, carpentry and technological change.

A Few New England Covered Bridges by Jacqueline Lee Dagenais Pdf

This book includes the three Historic Covered Bridges in Connecticut, along with the oldest covered bridge in Maine, and a few other covered bridges we found in our travels. Photos of all, my comments on how and why these pictures came about and a few Facts about each. This book came about because my brother John who had moved to California from Connecticut over 50 years ago and was unable to view my photos on line. And then the Forestville, Ct postman, Tom, told me about the Comstock Bridge, which I did not know about and that made my book complete. My son-in-law also picked up on my enthusiasm for pictures of covered bridges and he also made a couple of contributions to this book. It has been a fun project in my 82nd year. Enjoy !

Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges by Fred J. Moll Pdf

This book invites the reader to step back in time and imagine the days when ancestors traveled through wooden spans to reach their daily destinations. Starting in the early 1800s, Pennsylvania's rich forests provided natural material for the construction of more than 1,500 covered bridges across the state. The first covered bridge was built in 1805. Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges looks at the earliest covered bridges as well as those that have survived modern progress. Images also show rare railroad covered bridges that have been saved from destruction over the years.

Covered Bridges by Joseph D Conwill Pdf

Covered Bridges are historic pieces of American and Canadian rural history, gracing the countryside from Oregon to Tennessee and from California to New Brunswick and across Canada. In this lavishly illustrated volume Joseph D. Conwill recounts the rich, romantic history of covered bridges as they developed from early timber bridges, born out of the traditions of Medieval times, into modernized structures designed for the motorized traffic of the early twentieth century. Reflecting on the efforts to keep covered bridges in service as the face of the rural landscape is transformed, and the challenge of preserving their historic character while making them safe for modern traffic, Conwill guides the reader across the diverse range of covered bridges to be found throughout the North America.

Massachusetts Covered Bridges by John S. Burk Pdf

From hidden valleys in the Berkshire Hills to the North Shore, 275 documented highway and railroad covered bridges have been constructed in Massachusetts from the early 19th century onward, a figure that often comes as a surprise to those who traditionally associate these unique structures with northern New England. All but a small handful of these are long gone, lost to modern replacements, fires, wear, and the region’s notorious weather, especially the devastating storms of the late 1930s. The bridges came in all shapes and sizes, from diminutive 50-foot spans to multitiered structures of nearly 900 feet that crossed the Merrimack and Connecticut Rivers and were stout enough to support railroads across their roofs.

An Encyclopaedia of World Bridges by David McFetrich Pdf

Bridges are one of the most important artefacts constructed by man, the structures having had an incalculable effect on the development of trade and civilisation throughout the world. Their construction has led to continuing advances in civil engineering technology, leading to bigger spans and the use of new materials. Their failures, too, whether from an inadequate understanding of engineering principles or as a result of natural catastrophes or warfare, have often caused immense hardship as a result of lost lives or broken communications. In this book, a sister publication to his earlier An Encyclopaedia of British Bridges (Pen & Sword 2019), David McFetrich gives brief descriptions of some 1200 bridges from more than 170 countries around the world. They represent a wide range of different types of structure (such as beam, cantilever, stayed and suspension bridges). Although some of the pictures are of extremely well-known structures, many are not so widely recognisable and a separate section of the book includes more than seventy lists of bridges with distinctly unusual characteristics in their design, usage and history.

Spanning Time by Irene E. DuPont Pdf

This book introduces the first complete photographic collection of New Hampshire covered bridges (1983¿2017). Each photograph is produced using an early photographic technique,¿silver print¿, and is hand-colored in Marshall Oils, giving them the look of bygone days. The book is inspired by the era going back to the 1800s when the White Mountains began to occupy a special place in the history of America. Men discovered the picturesque highlands of the mountains, which formed a relatively compact geographic area and chain with the Appalachian Mountains¿the glacier-worn peaks dominated by the Old Man of the Mountain, Indian Head, and Mount Washington. The bridges are listed by number (assigned by the state), the name of town in which the bridge is located, and the name by which the bridge is generally known. All include a location, as these seem to be a favorite to find.

Covered Bridges in the New England States by Warren H. White Pdf

Covered bridges are gaining attention as states and counties are making large investments in the repair and preservation of existing covered bridges, offering tours and building new ones. This work documents all extant covered bridges--vehicle, railroad and pedestrian--in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The book is arranged by state, then by county and bridge name, using the most commonly known or locally used name. All other known names will be included for each bridge, cross-referenced in the index. Each state is prefaced with a brief synopsis of its bridges, past and present, including bridge types, truss types and geographic location. To be included, a bridge must have been originally built as, or intended to be, a true covered bridge, meaning that it is used as a means of traveling over an obstacle, usually water, not attached to buildings solely for access to the building or between buildings, and has a covered portion at least ten feet in length. Richly illustrated.
