New England Wild Flowers and Their Seasons (Classic Reprint) by William Whitman Bailey Pdf

Excerpt from New England Wild Flowers and Their Seasons The kindly reception given my Among Rhode Island Wild Flowers has led me, perhaps too rashly, to venture once more afield. In enlarging the scope of the work to include New England, my purpose has never been to mention all, or even a large part, of the owers of this region. I have collected, rather, the notes of many wander ings by hill and dale, on the sea-shore, or on the mountains, and these stand very much as originally written. It is hoped that they will thus seem fresher and more life-like than if worked up anew. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Harper's Guide to Wild Flowers (Classic Reprint) by Mrs. Caroline Alathea Creevey Pdf

Excerpt from Harper's Guide to Wild Flowers This book explains the easiest way Of telling owers and plants. These ways are based upon the new Classification. This Classification is the one presented in the seventh edi tion Of Gray's Manual of Botany, published in 1908. It em bodies the decisions Of the Vienna Congress Of 1905. The Congress came to an agreement respecting the botanical names and Classifications Of American owers, which we hope will not need to be revised. Some Old names, dear to us, have Come back. Greater simplicity as well as perma nency has been aimed for. The first way Of telling owers is by color. It is the simplest means Of identification, and to this the most space is given. Secondly, owers may be identified by their dwelling places or habitats. Thirdly, owers are shown by seasons, the time and order Of their blossoms. This book is a Guide to the owering plants Of the Atlantic seaboard, New England, the Middle States, and, to a limited extent, Of the Southern States. It is interest ing to note the wide latitudinal range Of some plants along the entire Atlantic coast. As the climate grows warmer, plants ascend the mountains, and New Eng land vegetation reappears two thousand feet high in Vir ginia. Plants which are local, and but seldom found, the size Of this book excludes. Plant immigrants, unless well established, are not enumerated. Taking New York as the center of a wide circle, any per son possessing no knowledge Of botany (except such as may be acquired from the Explanation Of Technical Terms) may identify any ower and learn something Of its story. There is every reason to believe that there is need Of a book complete in its means of identification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Flower Guide by Chester Albert Reed Pdf

Excerpt from Flower Guide: Revised and With New Illustrations; Wild Flowers East of the Rockies A plant is a wonderful organism, yet how few of us realize it as we casu ally glance at the flowers growing by the wayside. We see a beautiful flower; we know that in the course of time it withers and fades away; and we know that the next year the plant grows up again, sends forth its buds, which at the proper time unfold their petals, and so the cycle continues year after year, while we give little thought to the change that occurs. The cause and its effect. Volumes might be written, and a great many have been since the time of Dar win, upon the many interesting processes by which various flowers are propo gated. As this book is confined chiefly to the identification of flowers, we will give but a few illustrations between flowering seasons, We see in most flowers a thing of beauty; their real and. To them, most important functions is to pro duce seeds to perpetuate the species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our Early Wild Flowers by Harriet L. Keeler Pdf

Excerpt from Our Early Wild Flowers: A Study of the Herbaceous Plants Becoming in Early Spring in the Northern States Spring greatly influences the opening of the flowers; but really this influence is much less than one might think it would be; the spring flowers are very much like the spring birds, they appear when they are due with very little regard to the immediate weather; they obey the summons of the sun. They may not come so abundantly, but they come on time. By April 20, in the Middle West, the earliest flowers are past and the full flora well under way. In New England the season is later. Native Plants for New England Gardens by New England Wild Flower Society Pdf

Native plants are drought tolerant, disease resistant, wildlife friendly, and environmentally sound. Experts increasingly encourage gardeners to use natives exclusively. This handy and practical guide focuses on 100 great native flowers, ground covers, shrubs, ferns, and grasses that will thrive in New England gardens. The presentation is aimed at gardeners, who want concise, practical information. It will also include material on the importance and desirability of using native plants. The heart of this book is 100 two-page spreads, one for each species. The spreads will include facts about the plant of use to a gardener (not a botanist)—where it grows best, when it blooms, the soil conditions in which it thrives, its appeal to wildlife, sunlight requirements, how high it grows, how to propagate it, and how to avoid any problems particular to the species. Each spread will also feature two color photos.

Nantucket Wild Flowers (Classic Reprint) by Alice O. Albertson Pdf

Excerpt from Nantucket Wild Flowers This book attempts to be a companion for any one who desires to be more intimate with the wild flowers on Nantucket. Undeniably, the natural setting of the island's wild flowers casts an abiding spell, most deeply felt on "the Commons" (the heathland), where the majority of the wild flowers grow. This allurement may be born of vast and open spaces, where an air of elusive mystery, under the magnifying influence of a salt atmosphere, hangs about the low and rolling hills. Or it may be due to a vicarious joy in the triumph of flowers that have to fight for existence. Yet the very elements that make the fight necessary - salt winds and unhampered sunshine - are known to be influences also in creating intensity of colour in flowers and grasses. And beauty of colouring is, unquestionably, one of the strongest bonds between the Commons and us. Even in winter colour is by no means lacking. The lustrous Mealy-plum Vine carpets all the dry ground, and "Evergreen" bushes are abundant in the swamps. Later, the Commons in certain places arc covered with Mayflowers or the eye rests on an endless carpet of the Barren Heath (Hudsonia), dazzlingly yellow, or "Over hill, over dale, Thorough bush, thorough brier," are flaunted the most brilliant crimsons and yellows and purples. A veiling haze and changing lights save this profuseness of colour from barbaric crudity, softening outlines and colours. Still another factor in making Nantucket a happy hunting-ground for those interested in flowers is the geographical location. As Prof. Asa Gray once declared, nothing is a surprise from Nantucket.
