Preventable by Devi Sridhar Pdf

**THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER | BBC RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK** The definitive story of COVID-19 and how global politics shape our health - from a world-leading expert and the pandemic's go-to science communicator Professor Devi Sridhar has risen to prominence for her vital roles in communicating science to the public and speaking truth to power. In Preventable she highlights lessons learned from outbreaks past and present in a narrative that traces the COVID-19 pandemic - including her personal experience as a scientist - and sets out a vision for how we can better protect ourselves from the inevitable health crises to come. In gripping and heartfelt prose, Sridhar exposes the varied realities of those affected and puts you in the room with key decision makers at crucial moments. She vibrantly conveys the twists and turns of a plot that saw: deadlier varients emerge (contrary to the predictions of social media pundits who argued it would mutate to a milder form); countries with weak health systems like Senegal and Vietnam fare better than countries like the US and UK (which were consistently ranked as the most prepared); and the quickest development of game-changing vaccines in history (and their unfair distribution) Combining science, politics, ethics and economics, this definitive book dissects the global structures that determine our fate, and reveals the deep-seated economic and social inequalities at their heart - it will challenge, outrage and inspire. 'A brutally compelling reminder that if voices like Devi's had been listened to, so many more could have lived' OWEN JONES 'One of the most brilliant scientists in the world who has been proven consistently right in this crisis' PIERS MORGAN 'Excellent . . . Fair, clear and compelling' NICOLA STURGEON 'Those who have found Professor Devi Sridhar's expertise and calm advice invaluable since the arrival of Covid-19 will be glad to know that she has written Preventable' RACHEL COOKE, Guardian, Non-fiction to look out for in 2022

Ethical Human Rights by ANTHONY RAVLICH Pdf

This book provides a new plan for the world - an ethical approach to human rights, development and globalization which is firmly based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and unlike the prevailing ideologies has no human rights omissions. In author’s view, so the considerable majority of State leaderships can avoid accountability many human rights are omitted from international law. But the author considers the UN and States cannot claim the Universal Declaration as its authority when it leaves out so many human rights which he describes as a UN ‘hidden’ collectivist agenda. On 10 December 2008 at the UN, and hidden behind a global iron curtain, neoliberal absolutism, was created to replace neoliberalism. Both ideologies are found to stem from the UN ‘hidden’ collectivist agenda and result in the gross neglect of many. In the author’s view, neoliberal absolutism resulted in a major rebalance of ideological and economic power from the West to the Rest. In addition, exploitation was permitted by omission under international law resulting in the global financial crisis in 2008. In the author’s view, the UN’s ‘hidden’ collectivist agenda constitutes a global crime against humanity and the West should and would be justified in boycotting the UN until it is removed.

Desisting Sisters by Úna Barr Pdf

This book provides an important, critical, feminist perspective on desistance theory and practice. It is built around 23 original, narrative interviews with women and the staff of the community projects they attended, as well as a year of observations at Northshire Women’s Centres. The book is concerned with outlining a feminist approach to desistance which recognises that the majority of women in the criminal justice system come from backgrounds of abuse, economic disadvantage and have alcohol, drug and mental health issues. The book is also be concerned with challenging the dichotomy of narratives of victimisation and survival while recognising that women have agency. In doing so, Desisting Sisters contests the neoliberal and patriarchal approach to desistance which promotes women's role as care givers and unpaid volunteer workers. Ultimately, Barr contends that women's desistance can resist neo-liberal, patriarchal constructs, much in the same way that feminist criminology has contended that women's offending more generally, often does. This book will be of particular use and interest to those studying modules on both traditional and critical criminology, criminal justice, psychology, sociology and social work courses.

Hunting by Kathryn M. Hunter Pdf

This rich and vivid, highly illustrated social history gives an insight into the world of the New Zealand hunter. Hunting is central to many New Zealanders' lives - whether it's to feed their families, earn a living or to explore the country's amazing wilderness. Hunting: A New Zealand history describes how hunting was essential to the successful colonization of this country. It has helped to build communities and families, and hunting knowledge has been handed down from generation to generation. Cutting across racial and class differences, hunting is intrinsic to the way New Zealanders view the natural world and the way we've experienced, closely observed and understood the bush. Hunting ties New Zealand to the world, yet the particular shape of hunting here makes it remarkably distinctive. If there is a 'national culture' in New Zealand, then hunting and hunters are at its core.
