Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Newspaper Reporting and Correspondence by Grant Milnor Hyde Pdf

Excerpt from Newspaper Reporting and Correspondence: A Manual for Reporters, Correspondents, and Students of Newspaper Writing The purpose of this book is to instruct the pros pective newspaper reporter in the way to write those stories which his future paper will call upon him to write, and to help the young cub reporter and the struggling correspondent past the perils of the copy reader's pencil by telling them how to write clean copy that requires a minimum of editing. It is not concerned with the why of the newspaper business - the editor may attend to that - but with the how of the reporter's work. And an ability to write is believed to be the reporter's chief asset. There is no space in this book to dilate upon newspaper or ganization, the work of the business office, the writ ing of advertisements, the principles of editorial writing, or the how and why of newspaper policy and practice, as it is. These things do not concern the reporter during the first few months of his work, I and he will learn them from experience when he needs them. Until. Then, his usefulness depends} solely upon his ability to get news and to write it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Newspaper Reporting and Correspondence by Grant Milnor Hyde Pdf

Unlike almost any other profession, that of a newspaper reporter combines two very different activities—the gathering of news and the writing of news. Part of the work must be done in the office and part of it outside on the street. At his desk in the office a reporter is engaged in the literary, or pseudo-literary, occupation of writing news stories; outside on the street he is a detective gathering news and hunting for elusive facts to be combined later into stories. Although the two activities are closely related, each requires a different sort of ability and a different training. In a newspaper office the two activities are rarely separated, but a beginner must learn each duty independent of the other. This book will not attempt to deal with both; it will confine itself mainly to one phase, the pseudo-literary activity of writing news stories. However, introductory to the discussion of the writing of newspaper stories, we may glance at the other side of the newspaper writer's work—the gathering of the news. Where the newspaper gets its news and how it gets its news can be learned only by experience, for it differs in different cities and with different papers. But an outline of the background of news-gathering may assist us in writing the news after it is gathered and ready for us to write.

The Writing of News by Charles G. Ross Pdf

Excerpt from The Writing of News: A Handbook With Chapters on Newspaper Correspondence and Copy Reading In preparing this volume the author has had in mind the needs not only of students in schools of journalism, but of others who may desire a concise statement of the principles that govern the art of news writing as practiced by the American newspaper. It is hoped the book will prove helpful either as a laboratory guide in the school room or as a text book for home use. As the title indicates, the book deals with one phase of journalism, the presentation of the news story, more especially with the writing of the story - the reporter's part in the day's work. No attempt has been made to go into other aspects of journalism - the writing of editorials, the administrative features of the work, the delicate adjustment that every newspaper must make between its business and news departments except in so far as they bear directly upon the subject in hand. The term journalism is broadly used here to mean all branches of newspaper endeavor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Special Correspondence and the Newspaper Press in Victorian Print Culture, 1850–1886 by Catherine Waters Pdf

This book analyses the significance of the special correspondent as a new journalistic role in Victorian print culture, within the context of developments in the periodical press, throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. Examining the graphic reportage produced by the first generation of these pioneering journalists, through a series of thematic case studies, it considers individual correspondents and their stories, and the ways in which they contributed to, and were shaped by, the broader media landscape. While commonly associated with the reportage of war, special correspondents were in fact tasked with routinely chronicling all manner of topical events at home and abroad. What distinguished the work of these journalists was their effort to ‘picture’ the news, to transport readers imaginatively to the events described. While criticised by some for its sensationalism, special correspondence brought the world closer, shrinking space and time, and helping to create our modern news culture.
