Next Time We Strike by Allan Powell Pdf

May 1, 1900 turned into a day of horror at Scofield, Utah, where a mine explosion killed two hundred men. In the traumatic days that followed, the surviving miners began to understand that they, too, might be called to make this ultimate sacrifice for mine owners. The time for unionization in Utah was at hand. A sensitive and in-depth portrayal of the efforts to unionize Utah's coal miners, The Next Time We Strike explores the ethnic tensions and nativistic sentiments that hampered unionization efforts even in the face of mine explosions and economic exploitation. Powell utilizes oral interviews, coal company reports, newspapers, letters, and union records to tell the story from the miners' perspective.

We’re Going to Run This City by Stefan Epp-Koop Pdf

Stefan Epp-Koop’s "We’re Going to Run This City: Winnipeg’s Political Left After the General Strike" explores the dynamic political movement that came out of the largest labour protest in Canadian history and the ramifications for Winnipeg throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Few have studied the political Left at the municipal level—even though it is at this grassroots level that many people participate in political activity. Winnipeg was a deeply divided city. On one side, the conservative political descendants of the General Strike’s Citizen’s Committee of 1000 advocated for minimal government and low taxes. On the other side were the Independent Labour Party and the Communist Party of Canada, two parties rooted in the city’s working class, though often in conflict with each other. The political strength of the Left would ebb and flow throughout the 1920s and 1930s but peaked in the mid-1930s when the ILP’s John Queen became mayor and the two parties on the Left combined to hold a majority of council seats. Astonishingly, Winnipeg was governed by a mayor who had served jail time for his role in the General Strike.

The Red Thread by Jacob A. Zumoff Pdf

This book tells the story of 15,000 wool workers who went on strike for more than a year, defying police violence and hunger. The strikers were mainly immigrants and half were women. The Passaic textile strike, the first time that the Communist Party led a mass workers’ struggle in the United States, captured the nation’s imagination and came to symbolize the struggle of workers throughout the country when the labor movement as a whole was in decline during the conservative, pro-business 1920s. Although the strike was defeated, many of the methods and tactics of the Passaic strike presaged the struggles for industrial unions a decade later in the Great Depression.

The Strike Zone by R. Mark Janacek Pdf

It takes place every day - business professionals evaluate the performance of an individual, a department or team, and perhaps even an entire company. However, for many managers, the process of evaluating performance is a dreaded corporate ritual that fails to cut to the chase and answer the question: “Did the performer achieve the objective, or not?” For nearly 35 years as a national and international management consultant, Mark Janacek has helped Fortune 500 organizations around the globe to improve individual, team and corporate performance. An avid and lifelong baseball fan, Janacek applies the simplicity of calling balls, strikes and outs against the strike zone as a model for evaluating performance in the business setting. The Strike Zone provides both a practical set of techniques, as well as a strong philosophical foundation for simplifying and strengthening the evaluation process across the entire business enterprise. For over three decades Janacek observed the hand-wringing frustration of both managers and staff struggling with evaluation systems failing to identify and truly reward excellence in performance, while correctly indicting poor performers that weigh down the organization. The Strike Zone is designed to reverse this agonizing trend, and vector corporate cultures to perform as never before. Janacek liberates well-meaning HR departments and company executives as he uncovers the ten most common evaluation traps found in many organizations. The Strike Zone provides specific, hard-hitting strategies to avoid them. Janacek’s cutting edge approach makes The Strike Zone a must-read for everyone competing in the business setting. Regardless of your position - owner, executive, manager, team leader, or individual contributor – The Strike Zone will surely engage you with keen insights, great depth of thought, and ignite those long lost passions for excellence.

Writing Red by Charlotte Nekola,Paula Rabinowitz Pdf

This comprehensive collection of fiction, poetry, and reportage by revolutionary women of the 1930s lays to rest the charge that feminism disappeared after 1920. Among the thirty-six writers are Muriel Rukeyser, Margaret Walker, Josephine Herbst, Tillie Olsen, Tess Slesinger, Agnes Smedley, and Meridel Le Sueur. Other voices may be new to readers, including many working-class Black and white women. Topics covered range from sexuality and family relationships, to race, class, and patriarchy, to party politics. Toni Morrison writes that the anthology is “peopled with questioning, caring, socially committed women writers.”

To Elinor by Jane Beaton Bartow Pdf

Darrow fell in love with Elinor at first sight. But she was already engaged. To two men. He joined the Merchant Marine to train as a radio operator. His letters from Gallups Island and then the war charmed her, but Elinor had changed. Women entered the working world--as boatbuilders and micrometer testers and even riveters and movie stars--and she wanted to become Something Big. Marriage wasnt for her. Darrows letters kept coming. . . . . . the same letters my sister and I discovered in a large photo box after our parents deaths. Their romance was interrupted by the war and by the fledgling dreams of a woman, a Bishops daughter, who wanted to do something more than carry on the traditional roles women had in the forties. The tale of this romance is in both voices--Elinors from the homefront and Darrows from the war.
