The Allure of Toxic Leaders by Jean Lipman-Blumen Pdf

Toxic leaders, both political, like Slobodan Milosevic, and corporate, like Enron's Ken Lay, have always been with us, and many books have been written to explain what makes them tick. Here leadership scholar Jean Lipman-Blumen explains what makes the followers tick, exploring why people will tolerate--and remain loyal to--leaders who are destructive to their organizations, their employees, or their nations. Why do we knowingly follow, seldom unseat, frequently prefer, and sometimes even create toxic leaders? Lipman-Blumen argues that these leaders appeal to our deepest needs, playing on our anxieties and fears, on our yearnings for security, high self-esteem, and significance, and on our desire for noble enterprises and immortality. She also explores how followers inadvertently keep themselves in line by a set of insidious control myths that they internalize. For example, the belief that the leader must necessarily be in a position to "know more" than the followers often stills their objections. In addition, outside forces--such as economic depressions, political upheavals, or a crisis in a company--can increase our anxiety and our longing for charismatic leaders. Lipman-Blumen shows how followers can learn critical lessons for the future and survive in the meantime. She discusses how to confront, reform, undermine, blow the whistle on, or oust a toxic leader. And she suggests how we can diminish our need for strong leaders, identify "reluctant leaders" among competent followers, and even nurture the leader within ourselves. Toxic leaders charm, manipulate, mistreat, weaken, and ultimately devastate their followers. The Allure of Toxic Leaders tells us how to recognize these leaders before it's too late.

For the Record by Don Tolle Pdf

"For the Record is a personal, compelling story of the real world of music." - Forward Clarion Reviews "An eloquent story of a music man who faced and overcame the challenges that life threw at him." - Kirkus Reviews A student of records from my earliest days, I studied them in minute detail on the 45 rpm records that were the industry standard of the day. I was curious about anything and everything. They came in sleeves to protect them from scratches, and pictures of the artist, fan club information, plugs for the album, and various other tidbits of information usually adorned the sleeves. I internalized the music first before absorbing all the information contained on the labels: the artist, songwriters, titles, song lengths, publishing companies, producers, copyright information, and so on. Nothing escaped my attention. I don't know how I deciphered all of this, but I did to a large degree. My record collection, though small, likely never numbering more than twenty at any given time, was my most prized possession, and I pored over the records endlessly for any scrap of information I might have missed previously. An opportunity to view a friend's collection was always a cause for celebration, and an hour in a record shop was heaven. I had no particular plan in mind, as I didn't know enough to have a plan. But I knew I wanted to make music, and thus, the seeds of my future were sown in the fertile fields of my imagination at an early age. With a lifelong love of music dating back to his childhood, author Don Tolle dreamed about achieving fame as a recording artist. But it was in 1973, after a tour in Vietnam, that he finally took the leap, picked up the telephone, and called record companies about his songs. It was a fateful day in his career, one that reverberates even today. In For the Record, Tolle shares his career as a music man, beginning in the record business of the wide-open 1970s, when everything seemed possible. The story follows his career from its beginnings in an entry-level position at a record company to his eventual founding of a record company and production of his own hit records, winning multiple awards in the process. Tolle also shares the story of his precipitous fall from the summit of success. For the Record describes his walk through the long shadows of the valley, where he wandered lost and alone before staging a remarkable comeback that ultimately led to his greatest triumph and the realization of the misplaced, but not forgotten, dream of his youth. Filled with the experiences, memories, revelations, and reflections of an amazing career during the golden age of the music business, this memoir offers an insider's view of the music world filled with unique personalities.

Parenting the Guardian Class by Jonathan I. Cloud Pdf

It has been a continuous struggle with myself as to whether I should write this journal. I was frustrated and needed to ascertain some way of keeping my sanity. It finally dawned on me that on the occasions when I was very frustrated, writing thoughts down might become a way to alleviate some of that stress. In writing this journal, I hoped to shed some light on the employees' and their perceptions and how they contributed to some of the problems at United Airlines. In the years I worked at United Airlines, I made some of the best friends I will ever have. I do not want you to think all the time I spent at United was negative. It was not. I have had some very good times and enjoyed working for them. Through all the challenges I faced, the good times far outweigh the bad. I always believed in doing things to enhance the work environment, and make it a fun experience for everyone so that it did not feel like being on a job. Therefore, I helped organize, plan, and create that atmosphere, through functions such as potlucks, and steak barbecues. In addition, I would bring in bagels, cakes, cookies etc. for the whole shop. We had a lot of fun. United had some of the best people you could ever imagine working for them, we were all like family! I had no intention of doing anything with these writings; it was simply a catharsis for me. When I retired there were so many things going on with United I decided at that point maybe I should publish my journal. A lot of the things that happened were events I was afraid would happen And did, such as the loss of so many jobs.

The Patriot's History Reader by Larry Schweikart,Michael Allen,Dave Dougherty Pdf

An original collection of the most influential documents in American history, from the bestselling author of A Patriot's History of the United States. Since 2005, A Patriot's History of the United States has become a modern classic for its defense of America as a unique country founded on principles of justice, equality, and freedom for all. The Patriot's History Reader continues this tradition by going back to the original sources-the documents, speeches, and legal decisions that shaped our country into what it is today. The authors explore both oft-cited documents-the Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, and Roe v. Wade--as well as those that are less famous. Among these are George Washington's letter to Alexander Hamilton, which essentially outline America's military strategy for the next 150 years, and Herbert Hoover's speech on business ethics, which examines the government's role in regulating private enterprise. By helping readers explore history at its source, this book sheds new light on the principles and personalities that have made America great.

A Vision So Noble by Daniel Ford Pdf

John Boyd was arguably the greatest American military theorist since the sea power strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan at the turn of the 20th Century. Best known for his formulation of the OODA Loop as a model for competitive decision making, Colonel Boyd was also an original thinker in developing tactics for air-to-air combat, designing warplanes, and the fluid, mobile warfare known to the Germans as blitzkrieg and to modern armies as "maneuver warfare." As much as anyone, John Boyd was the architect of the two great campaigns against Saddam Hussein's Iraq, both the 1991 liberation of Kuwait and the 2003 "March Up" to Baghdad by the U.S. Army and Marines. But what of the costly, drawn-out insurgency that baffled the invaders once Baghdad had fallen? In this short book, Daniel Ford applies Boyd's thinking to the problem of counter-insurgency. Unlike the U.S. military in 2003, it turns out that Boyd had indeed put considerable thought into what might transpire after an effective "blitz" campaign. Indeed, he found many similarities between "blitzers" and what he preferred to call guerrillas, and he thought that they might be defeated by turning their own tactics against them. This is an expanded version of a dissertation submitted in the War Studies program at King's College London.

This Noble Land by James A. Michener Pdf

In such modern classics as Chesapeake, Centennial, Hawaii, Alaska, and Texas, James A. Michener proved time and again that his understanding of and love for his country was unparalleled. This Noble Land is Michener’s most personal statement about America, an examination of the issues that threaten to fragment and undermine the nation—racial conflict, the widening gulf between rich and poor, the decline of education, the inadequacies of our health care system—as well as a thought-provoking prescription for sustaining our “outstanding success.” Infused with the wisdom and passion of a lifetime, This Noble Land stands as a wake-up call for a troubled era. Praise for This Noble Land “A book-length essay on the often worrying, often inspiring course of America in the nine decades of Michener’s life.”—The Washington Post “Michener is more interested in fixing the problems than in fixing the blame.”—The Dallas Morning News “Michener’s are the beach books that, unlike most other beach books, leave you smarter than you were when you started reading. Each delivers the product of all that research, doled out to the reader at just the right rate. You know right away who the bad guys are—the petty ones, the stingy ones. The heroes are generous and energetic and smart and, above all, unprejudiced. The real-life villains in This Noble Land are the people Michener perceives as ‘petty, mean and vengeful.’”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Stirring . . . an admirable effort to define what has made our country great and how to preserve what is best about it.”—Kirkus Reviews
