The Metallurgy of the Non-Ferrous Metals (Classic Reprint) by William Gowland Pdf

Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Non-Ferrous Metals In the present volume an effort has been made to supply students and metallurgists with a concise treatise dealing with the principles on which the various processes which concern the non-ferrous metals are based, and with the manner in which the processes are carried out in typical modern works. The general plan followed is to consider under the name of each metal (1) its physical and chemical properties; (2) the alloy of which it is the chief constituent; (3) the composition and applications of commercial brands, and the effects of substances which interfere with those applications; (4) the chief ores and the processes by which the metal is extracted from them or other sources, and refined or made suitable for industrial or other purposes; (5) the principles and conditions on which the success of these processes depend; (6) the furnaces and appliances employed in the processes, and the chemical changes and reactions which occur in the operations; (7) examples of actual practice followed at the present time in important extraction works. Much that is not essential and processes which are obsolete have been omitted, while those which are falling into disuse are only briefly described. In the chapters dealing with gold, silver, copper, and lead special care has been taken to keep pace with the progress which has been made in the metallurgy of these metals, and it is believed that no important modern successful process has been omitted. Many of the illustrations are original, and a considerable number of the others have been selected from papers by well-knowrn metallurgists, the sources in all cases being acknowledged. The aim of the book is not only to help the student, but the author has also in view a wider circle than those merely who are going through a course of metallurgical training, and hopes that others who are actually engaged in practical work may find its pages worth consulting. EMC ’91: Non-Ferrous Metallurgy—Present and Future by Jean Vereecken Pdf

This volume contains the papers that will be presented at 'EMC '91 '-the European Metals Conference-to be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 15 to 20 September 1991, and organized by Benelux Metallurgie, GDMB (Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhutten und Bergleute) and IMM (the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy). 'EMC '91' is the first of an intended major series organized at the European level with the aim of bringing together all those who are involved with the extraction and processing of non-ferrous metals-European metallurgists and their international colleagues-to provide them with the opportunity to exchange views on the state and evolution of their industry. The programme covers all the different aspects of the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals from mining to fabricated products. Particular attention is being paid to the European non -ferrous industry with respect to changes in demand, the technology used, pressures on the environment and the competitive position of manufacturers. The contributions of the plenary lecturers (copies of which will appear in the IMM journal Minerals Industry International in 1991-92) and the many authors are gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are also due to the referees of the papers, the sponsors, the companies that have allowed registrants to visit their operations, the chairmen of the technical sessions and the staffs of the organizing bodies for their efficient administrative work. The Complete Book on Non-Ferrous and Precious Metals with Electroplating Chemicals by Dr. H. Panda Pdf

Non-ferrous metals are those which don’t have any iron content. These are specified for structural applications requiring reduced weight, higher strength, nonmagnetic properties, higher melting points, or resistance to chemical, atmospheric corrosion and also for electrical and electronic applications. A precious metal is a rare, naturally occurring metallic chemical element of high economic value. Although they have industrial uses, they are better known for their uses in art, jewellery and coinage. Depending on the end use, metals can be simply cast into the finished part, or cast into an intermediate form, such as an ingot, then worked, or wrought, by rolling, forging, extruding, or other deformation process. Electroplating is a procedure that uses electrolysis to apply a thin layer of a metal over the surface of another metal. Electroplating chemicals are used to change the surface properties of an object such as abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, etc. This chemical is widely demanded in automotive, electronics, telecommunications, aerospace and precision engineering industries. This handbook explains different extraction and production processes with flow diagrams of various non ferrous and precious metals. Major contents of the book are Silver, Gold, Copper, Complex salts of copper, silver and gold, magnesium, chromium, platinum group of metals, nickel, zinc, lead, aluminium, mercury, cobalt, sodium, sodium chloride, soda ash, sodium sulfate, glauber salt, hydrochloric acid, sodium silicate, sodium sulfides, sodium thiosulfate, sodium bisulfate, anhydrous, sodium hyposulfite, liquid chlorine, hydrides of boron, silicon, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, hydrazine, hydrogen cyanide, melamine, amines, aniline, isocyanates, phosphorus, tin, ferroalloys, manganese, bismuth, cerium, phosphoric acid, tungsten, niobium and tantalum etc. It will be a standard reference book for professionals, entrepreneurs, engineers, those studying and researching in this important area and others interested in the field of non ferrous, precious metals and electroplating chemicals.
