Shell Structures: Theory and Applications by Wojciech Pietraszkiewicz,Jaroslaw Gorski Pdf

Shells are basic structural elements of modern technology and everyday life. Examples are automobile bodies, water and oil tanks, pipelines, aircraft fuselages, nanotubes, graphene sheets or beer cans. Also nature is full of living shells such as leaves of trees, blooming flowers, seashells, cell membranes, the double helix of DNA or wings of insects. In the human body arteries, the shell of the eye, the diaphragm, the skin or the pericardium are all shells as well. Shell Structures: Theory and Applications, Volume 3 contains 137 contributions presented at the 10th Conference “Shell Structures: Theory and Applications” held October 16-18, 2013 in Gdansk, Poland. The papers cover a wide spectrum of scientific and engineering problems which are divided into seven broad groups: general lectures, theoretical modelling, stability, dynamics, bioshells, numerical analyses, and engineering design. The volume will be of interest to researchers and designers dealing with modelling and analyses of shell structures and thin-walled structural elements.

Mechanics and Physics of Structured Media: Asymptotic and Integral Methods of Leonid Filshtinsky provides unique information on the macroscopic properties of various composite materials and the mathematical techniques key to understanding their physical behaviors. The book is centered around the arguably monumental work of Leonid Filshtinsky. His last works provide insight on fracture in electromagnetic-elastic systems alongside approaches for solving problems in mechanics of solid materials. Asymptotic methods, the method of complex potentials, wave mechanics, viscosity of suspensions, conductivity, vibration and buckling of functionally graded plates, and critical phenomena in various random systems are all covered at length. Other sections cover boundary value problems in fracture mechanics, two-phase model methods for heterogeneous nanomaterials, and the propagation of acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic waves in a one-dimensional periodic two-component material. Covers key issues around the mechanics of structured media, including modeling techniques, fracture mechanics in various composite materials, the fundamentals of integral equations, wave mechanics, and more Discusses boundary value problems of materials, techniques for predicting elasticity of composites, and heterogeneous nanomaterials and their statistical description Includes insights on asymptotic methods, wave mechanics, the mechanics of piezo-materials, and more Applies homogenization concepts to various physical systems

Shell and Membrane Theories in Mechanics and Biology by Holm Altenbach,Gennadi I. Mikhasev Pdf

This book presents the latest results related to shells characterize and design shells, plates, membranes and other thin-walled structures, a multidisciplinary approach from macro- to nanoscale is required which involves the classical disciplines of mechanical/civil/materials engineering (design, analysis, and properties) and physics/biology/medicine among others. The book contains contributions of a meeting of specialists (mechanical engineers, mathematicians, physicists and others) in such areas as classical and non-classical shell theories. New trends with respect to applications in mechanical, civil and aero-space engineering, as well as in new branches like medicine and biology are presented which demand improvements of the theoretical foundations of these theories and a deeper understanding of the material behavior used in such structures.

Vibration and Nonlinear Dynamics of Plates and Shells by Meilan Liu ,Cho W. S. To Pdf

This e-book focuses on the vibrational and nonlinear aspects of plate and shell structure dynamics by applying the finite element model. Specifically, shell finite elements employed in the computational studies included in this book are the mixed formulation based lower order flat triangular shell finite elements. Topics in the book are covered over nine chapters, including the theoretical background for the vibration analysis of plates and shells, vibration analysis of plate structures, shells with single curvature, shells with double curvatures, and box structures (single-cell and double-cell) and the theoretical development for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of plate and shell structures. In addition to presenting the steps in the derivations of the consistent element stiffness and mass matrices, constitutive relations of elastic materials and elasto-plastic materials with isotropic strain hardening, yield criterion, return mapping, configuration and stress updating strategies, and numerical algorithms are presented and discussed. The book is a suitable reference for advanced undergraduates and post-graduate level engineering students, research engineers, and scientists working in the field of applied physics and engineering.

Classical Continuum Mechanics by Karan S. Surana Pdf

This book provides physical and mathematical foundation as well as complete derivation of the mathematical descriptions and constitutive theories for deformation of solid and fluent continua, both compressible and incompressible with clear distinction between Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions as well as co- and contra-variant bases. Definitions of co- and contra-variant tensors and tensor calculus are introduced using curvilinear frame and then specialized for Cartesian frame. Both Galilean and non-Galilean coordinate transformations are presented and used in establishing objective tensors and objective rates. Convected time derivatives are derived using the conventional approach as well as non-Galilean transformation and their significance is illustrated in finite deformation of solid continua as well as in the case of fluent continua. Constitutive theories are derived using entropy inequality and representation theorem. Decomposition of total deformation for solid and fluent continua into volumetric and distortional deformation is essential in providing a sound, general and rigorous framework for deriving constitutive theories. Energy methods and the principle of virtual work are demonstrated to be a small isolated subset of the calculus of variations. Differential form of the mathematical models and calculus of variations preclude energy methods and the principle of virtual work. The material in this book is developed from fundamental concepts at very basic level with gradual progression to advanced topics. This book contains core scientific knowledge associated with mathematical concepts and theories for deforming continuous matter to prepare graduate students for fundamental and basic research in engineering and sciences. The book presents detailed and consistent derivations with clarity and is ideal for self-study.
