Usage-Driven Database Design by George Tillmann Pdf

Design great databases—from logical data modeling through physical schema definition. You will learn a framework that finally cracks the problem of merging data and process models into a meaningful and unified design that accounts for how data is actually used in production systems. Key to the framework is a method for taking the logical data model that is a static look at the definition of the data, and merging that static look with the process models describing how the data will be used in actual practice once a given system is implemented. The approach solves the disconnect between the static definition of data in the logical data model and the dynamic flow of the data in the logical process models. The design framework in this book can be used to create operational databases for transaction processing systems, or for data warehouses in support of decision support systems. The information manager can be a flat file, Oracle Database, IMS, NoSQL, Cassandra, Hadoop, or any other DBMS. Usage-Driven Database Design emphasizes practical aspects of design, and speaks to what works, what doesn’t work, and what to avoid at all costs. Included in the book are lessons learned by the author over his 30+ years in the corporate trenches. Everything in the book is grounded on good theory, yet demonstrates a professional and pragmatic approach to design that can come only from decades of experience. Presents an end-to-end framework from logical data modeling through physical schema definition. Includes lessons learned, techniques, and tricks that can turn a database disaster into a success. Applies to all types of database management systems, including NoSQL such as Cassandra and Hadoop, and mainstream SQL databases such as Oracle and SQL Server What You'll Learn Create logical data models that accurately reflect the real world of the user Create usage scenarios reflecting how applications will use a new database Merge static data models with dynamic process models to create resilient yet flexible database designs Support application requirements by creating responsive database schemas in any database architecture Cope with big data and unstructured data for transaction processing and decision support systems Recognize when relational approaches won’t work, and when to turn toward NoSQL solutions such as Cassandra or Hadoop Who This Book Is For System developers, including business analysts, database designers, database administrators, and application designers and developers who must design or interact with database systems

Component Database Systems by Klaus R. Dittrich,Andreas Geppert Pdf

Component Database Systems is a collection of invited chapters by the researchers making the most influential contributions in the database industry's trend toward componentization This book represents the sometimes-divergent, sometimes-convergent approaches taken by leading database vendors as they seek to establish commercially viable componentization strategies. Together, these contributions form the first book devoted entirely to the technical and architectural design of component-based database systems. In addition to detailing the current state of their research, the authors also take up many of the issues affecting the likely future directions of component databases. If you have a stake in the evolution of any of today's leading database systems, this book will make fascinating reading. It will also help prepare you for the technology that is likely to become widely available over the next several years. * Is comprised of contributions from the field's most highly respected researchers, including key figures at IBM, Oracle, Informix, Microsoft, and POET. * Represents the entire spectrum of approaches taken by leading software companies working on DBMS componentization strategies. * Covers component-focused architectures, methods for hooking components into an overall system, and support for component development. * Examines the component technologies that are most valuable to Web-based and multimedia databases. * Presents a thorough classification and overview of component database systems.

Databases and Information Systems by Albertas Caplinskas Pdf

Modern databases and information systems essentially differ from their predecessors. Ontology-based and knowledge-based approaches to system development, UML based IS development methodologies, XML databases and heterogeneous information models have come to the fore. All these fundamental aspects are discussed in this book. This publication contains a collection of 22 high quality papers written by 44 authors. These articles present original results in modern database technologies, database applications, data warehousing, data mining, ontologies, and modern information systems. Special emphasis is put on multimedia database systems, heterogeneous data integration methods, view optimizations, ontology engineering tools, modeling and model transformations (MDA). Theoretical aspects as well as technical development issues are considered. The intended audience for this book is researchers, advanced students and practitioners who are interested in advanced topics on databases and information systems.

Advances in Databases and Information Systems by Johann Eder,Ivan Rozman,Tatjana Welzer Pdf

The 3rd Eastern European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS’99) took place on 13-16- September 1999, in Maribor, Slovenia. It was organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD, the Moscow chapter of ACM SIGMOD, Slovenian Society Informatika, and the Slovenian Ministry of Technology. The aim of the ADBIS series of conferences is to provide a forum for the exchange of scientific achievements and experiences using innovative methods and approaches between the research communities of Central and Eastern Europe and the rest of the world in the area of databases and information systems. The 1999 conference continues the series of ADBIS events held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Poznan. The ADBIS steering committee has the ambition to make the ADBIS conference the premiere database and information systems conference in Central and Eastern Europe, to increase interaction and collaboration between researchers from East and West, and to provide an internationally recognized forum for the presentation of research and experiences in all aspects of modern database technology and information systems. To achieve these goals an international program committee selected 26 full research papers in a rigorous reviewing process from a total of 94 submissions from 33 different countries. This high number of submissions from so many different areas shows the truly worldwide recognition of and interest in the ADBIS series.

Tools and Algorithms for the Construction of Analysis of Systems by W. Rance Cleaveland Pdf

ETAPS’99 is the second instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprises ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), four satellite workshops (CMCS, AS, WAGA, CoFI), seven invited lectures, two invited tutorials, and six contributed tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Dieren t blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

Next Generation Information Technologies and Systems by Ron Y. Pinter,Shalom Tsur Pdf

The Next Generation Information Technologies and Systems (NGITS) wo- shop series is a biannual event held in Israel since 1993. Like its predecessors, NGITS’99 brings together active members of the international research com- nity interested in information technology and knowledge based systems. Many of the base technologies in the traditional areas of database management systems, information retrieval, and resource optimization, are being deployed nowadays in novel systems and applications that ?ourish with the astonishing increase in computational power, storage capacity, communication, and - of course - the advent of the world-wide web. These new fronts, in turn, present an ever gr- ing set of challenges to the technologies, such as data availability, information integrity, and knowledge extraction, fuelling an exciting set of activities. Our workshop clearly re?ects this trend, o?ering a rich sample of the state of the art at the close of the millennium and a glimpse of what is to come in the next one. In response to the call for papers, we received 34 high quality submissions, 22 of which were carefully selected by the Program Committee for presentation at the workshop and inclusion in these proceedings. These include 17 full length papers as well as 5 short papers (that will be accompanied by demonstrations during the workshop). In addition, it is our pleasure to feature two invited talks, given by Professor J. Ullman of Stanford University and IBM Fellow C. Mohan.
