Nordic Work with Traumatised Refugees by Eugene Guribye,Birgit Lie,Gwynyth Overland Pdf

The Nordic welfare societies have been described as ‘beacons of light’ in work with refugees, with their emphasis on egalitarian and extensive benefit levels, wealth redistribution, promotion of gender equality and maximisation of labour force participation. Members of the population benefit from free education, universal healthcare and public services that provide an elaborate social safety net. The conditions seem favourable for refugees exposed to severely traumatic events in countries of origin and in flight who have come to rest in the safe havens of the Nordic countries. But has society really done what it could and should in the field of refugee mental health? Does it really care? This book provides an investigative perspective on challenges encountered by professionals in the Nordic countries in refugee mental health and care, addressing key contemporary challenges faced by forcibly displaced populations. Leading academics and practitioners working with refugees in clinics, universities and research centres in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, physical therapies, social work, child care, education, anthropology, and sociology present their work on care, treatment perspectives, human rights, families in flight and exile, asylum-seekers and undocumented migrants. In general, the growing focus on trauma, refugee streams and unresolved issues around the world makes this book a useful source work for the increasing number of professions being drawn into this work. In regard to universities and colleges, it offers transcultural perspectives in medicine, nursing, social work and social science.

Employment and traumatised refugees by Anja Weber Stendal,Lisbeth Mørk Iversen Pdf

This report presents the results of a study of effective employment initiatives for refugees and reunited refugee family members who are psychologically vulnerable, have symptoms of trauma or are traumatised. The study consists of a literature study and an exploratory investigation of existing practices for the target group in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The study shows that the knowledge base about effective employment initiatives for the target group is currently limited. Nevertheless, several best practices are identified that have a good probability of showing positive employment outcomes for the target group. The report presents the existing knowledge base in the litterature, detailed description of best practices and it identifies key prerequisites in creating effective employment initiatives for the target group.

In this report, we describe efforts to achieve faster integration of refugees and foreign-born residents in the labour market in the Nordic region. The examples presented in the report have been selected by our group of Nordic experts. In selecting examples, they have focused on the integration initiatives deemed to have the greatest likelihood of being implemented in their neighbouring countries. This selection is based on the knowledge gained from research and the recommendations made by our Nordic co-operation partners. In this report we have also sought to give a brief description of current research and knowledge regarding effective measures and the possible challenges facing refugees in the labour markets in the Nordic Region. Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2021-052/ All the Nordic countries have excellent data on the situation of refugee children and youth. This creates unique opportunities for comparison to better understand the links between the socio-economic context in each country and the integration of young immigrants. CAGE has investigated inequalities in education, labour market participation and the health of young refugees during their formative years, also looking into how these inequalities relate to national immigration policies and other contextual factors.

Refugee Mental Health by Stephan Zipfel,Monique C. Pfaltz,Ulrich Schnyder Pdf

The focus of this Research Topic is on research that aims to understand the relationships between pre-migration stressors and potentially traumatic experiences, post-migration living difficulties, and mental health in refugees of both sexes throughout the lifespan. We know very little about how concepts of assessing and treating mental health conditions actually work when applied to traumatized refugee populations from different cultures (e.g., the Yazidis people from northern Iraq). Moreover, there is also a great need to better understand the relationship between mental health and refugees’ integration in their host countries’ societies (acquiring language skills, fitness for work, economic independence, private life, etc.). This Research Topic will also focus on the issue of culture—the extent to which concepts of mental health care can translate and be implemented in different social, economic, and cultural settings around the world.

Neoliberalism, Nordic Welfare States and Social Work by Masoud Kamali,Jessica H. Jönsson Pdf

How have three decades of neoliberalism affected the Nordic welfare states as well as the organisation, education and practices of social work in those countries? During recent decades the welfare states of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have gone through dramatic changes infl uenced by the political triumph of neoliberalism. This has led to both the electoral success of extreme right and mainstream neoliberal parties, and to the neoliberal ideological transformations of social democratic parties. The neoliberal doctrine of making governance cheaper has thus been made the focus of governance and has led to increased marginalisation and social problems. This is the first book to comparatively explore the role of neoliberal reforms on social work and social policy across the Nordic welfare states. The richly theoretical and empirical chapters explore and illustrate the consequences of the dominance of neoliberal policies and provide an analysis of the effects of globalisation, glocalisation, welfare nationalism, symbolic violence and forced migration. The book provides valuable insights into the shortcomings of retreating welfare states in a time of increasing glocal social problems. Neoliberalism, Nordic Welfare States and Social Work should be considered essential reading for critical social work education. Students, scholars, educators and researchers of Nordic countries and beyond have much to learn from this book.

Group Analysis for Refugees Experiencing Trauma by Aida Alayarian Pdf

In this prescient and sensitive volume, Aida Alayarian looks at how psychoanalysis in group settings can benefit refugees who have experienced trauma, with an express focus on transference and countertransference. Group Analysis for Refugees Experiencing Trauma offers a comprehensive overview of trauma from a psychoanalytic perspective, before delving into the nuance of trauma experienced by asylum seekers, refugees and those who have gone through forced migration. Through clinical vignettes, Alayarian highlights the importance of the resilience that can be brought about from group sessions and shared experience in helping to heal the wounds of trauma. She looks at the vital role of social injustice in this trauma and shows how this can be directly applied to work with other groups experiencing human rights violations, destitution, and loss. She shows how looking at relational patterns as a means of understanding conscious, unconscious, and subconscious thought processes can provide essential breakthroughs with patients, as well as the importance of paying close attention to countertransference to avoid a breakdown of the clinical relationship. Using psychoanalytic theories from intercultural perspectives to show the multidimensional nature of work with trauma patients, this book is essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health experts working with refugees and patients experiencing trauma.

Unaccompanied Young Migrants by Clayton, Sue,Gupta, Anna Pdf

Taking a multi-disciplinary perspective, and one grounded in human rights, Unaccompanied young migrants explores in-depth the journeys migrant youths take through the UK legal and care systems. Arriving with little agency, what becomes of these children as they grow and assume new roles and identities, only to risk losing legal protection as they reach eighteen? Through international studies and crucially the voices of the young migrants themselves, the book examines the narratives they present and the frameworks of culture and legislation into which they are placed. It challenges existing policy and questions, from a social justice perspective, what the treatment of this group tells us about our systems and the cultural presuppositions on which they depend.

Welfare Work with Immigrants and Refugees in a Social Democratic Welfare State by Trine Øland Pdf

Welfare Work with Immigrants and Refugees in a Social Democratic Welfare State provides an ambiguous yet disturbing portrait of the inner workings of the Danish welfare state and its implications in a context of globalisation and migration. Through a sociological interview-study with welfare workers, this book describes how processes of othering are undercurrents of welfare work. The processes construct immigrants and refugees as a kind of people who are not only culturally different but also behind, deficient and weak, and thus assigned the potential to benefit from welfare work. These processes are designated to advance a racial welfare dynamic of remedial circularity which keeps the immigrant and refugee on the threshold of modern living and democracy. It is thus depicted how welfare work is intertwined not with a biological framework but with a cultural framework naturalising and ontologising cultural differences. The book examines how welfare work tends to appreciate immigrants and refugees as dislocated people with a cultural lack and how it abides by the dictums of civilising expansions and humanitarian imperialism within the modern state. This book will be useful for every scholar who wants to reconsider and think differently about how the welfare state is going to proceed in a global society.

Implementation of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine by Berlina, Anna Pdf

Available Online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2022-026/ On 4 March 2022, the EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive to provide quick and effective assistance to people fleeing the war in Ukraine. This report provides an overview of how the Temporary Protection Directive and the national protection schemes have been implemented in the Nordic countries. The analysis identifies differences between the countries when it comes to the categories of persons who qualify for temporary protection, as well as the protection status that refugees from Ukraine receive. The study also identifies certain challenges to implementing temporary protection faced by all the Nordic countries. These include the fact that refugees from Ukraine are treated differently than other groups of refugees, the difficulties involved in monitoring secondary migration and the lack of vulnerability assessments.
