They were early immigrants to New Amsterdam, New Netherland about 1647. Due to business opportunities with the opening of the Erie Canal his family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was approaching school age. At the young age of 16 he passed his college entrance examination, but waited a year before he attended Williams College (1867) and the Columbia Law School (1869). Norse Stories by Hamilton Wright Mabie Pdf

Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas by Hamilton Wright Mabie is a refreshing read for the young and old alike. The author presents the original Scandinavian poetry in riveting prose and has succeeded in retaining the flavour of the Norse tales without losing anything to translation. Hamilton Wright Mabie has made an excellent selection of myths that fill the 16 chapters in Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas and taken great care to sustain the chronology of events as they unfolded, starting with the creation of the world, moving on to the adventure and warfare with giants and culminating in the regeneration of the new world under the All-Father. While the valour of Thor and engrossing descriptions of battle and victory may tingle the imagination of younger readers, Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas is by no means a book meant only for children. It has hidden within it some moving messages of hope, peace and prosperity, which can only be truly appreciated by a more mature reader. Mabie has kept the tone friendly and engaging. More importantly, he has resisted the all-consuming need to allegorize these beautiful stories and stuck to pure narrative which does absolute justice to the work. Readers can take a trip down memory lane by awakening the child within them with or read it as an adult to absorb the finer nuances of life, happiness and peace. The Life of the Spirit by Hamilton Wright Mabie Pdf

The severity of Christ, the teacher of love, is more terrible than that of the sternest Old Testament lawgiver, because the test he applies not only tries conduct but searches motive. The law is satisfied when restoration is made or the penalty paid; it cannot go further. But to love, which searches the heart as with a lighted torch, these are only the external signs of repentance; it cannot rest short of a complete cleansing of the spirit. With a severity born of a passionate determination to make the best in every man supreme, it will accept nothing less than final and lasting purification.-from "Chapter XVIII: The Soul of Goodness"Alternating stern harshness with gentle compassion, Hamilton Wright Mabie-one of the more influential thinkers and popular writers of the early 20th century-describes a life lived in the path of Christ that may comfort the very devout, with its images of a demanding paternal God who hurts the believer because he loves the believer, but it will chill others. "The root of all evil... in life is atheism," Wright pronounces, and will brook no argument. The unquestioning and unshakable certainty of Wright's thinking assures this 1899 book continues to be an excellent resource for understanding the modern Christian viewpoint.OF INTEREST TO: Christian scholars, students of the culture wars, readers of religious philosophyAmerican essayist and critic HAMILTON WRIGHT MABIE (1845-1916) wrote extensively on literature, religion, and mythology, and as the book columnist for Ladies Home Journal magazine from 1902 to 1912, he helped spread the love of reading to the general public. Among his many works are Essays in Literary Interpretation (1892), William Shakespeare, Poet, Dramatist, and Man (1900), Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas (1901), Legends Every Child Should Know (1906), and Heroes Every Child Should Know (1908).
