A History of American Magazines, Volume II: 1850-1865 by Frank Luther Mott Pdf

The first volume of this work, covering the period from 1741-1850, was issued in 1931 by another publisher, and is reissued now without change, under our imprint. The second volume covers the period from 1850 to 1865; the third volume, the period from 1865 to 1885. For each chronological period, Mr. Mott has provided a running history which notes the occurrence of the chief general magazines and the developments in the field of class periodicals, as well as publishing conditions during that period, the development of circulations, advertising, payments to contributors, reader attitudes, changing formats, styles and processes of illustration, and the like. Then in a supplement to that running history, he offers historical sketches of the chief magazines which flourished in the period. These sketches extend far beyond the chronological limitations of the period. The second and third volumes present, altogether, separate sketches of seventy-six magazines, including The North American Review, The Youth's Companion, The Liberator, The Independent, Harper's Monthly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, The Atlantic Monthly, St. Nicholas, and Puck. The whole is an unusual mirror of American civilization.

The North American Review, Vol. 7 by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR Pdf

Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 7: And Miscellaneous Journal To discover what beauty is, and in what manner it affects us, has long been a favourite object of speculative curiosity. The learned have pursued this inquiry with ardour, from its apparently intimate connexion with some of the most interesting truths of intellectual philosophy; and many of the higher order of artists have been led to anticipate, from the success of their researches, an almost infinite improvement of their powers to please. But no such improvement seems likely to result from these speculations. For him, who would paint a fine picture, it may be about as useful to inquire into the nature of beauty, as for one, who would acquaint himself with history, to penetrate into the nature of truth, or for one, who would feel the force of a mathematical demonstration, to develop the fundamental principles of human belief. In this, as in most other subjects, men have commenced with what is difficult and remote, and afterwards proceeded to what is intelligible and familiar, - have loved to systematize and speculate, rather than to examine and compare. But however misguided and unsuccessful these researches, in general, may have been, they are neither useless nor uninteresting. The Politics of National Capitalism by James P. Brennan,Marcelo Rougier Pdf

In mid-twentieth-century Latin America there was a strong consensus between Left and Right&—Communists working under the directives of the Third International, nationalists within the military interested in fostering industrialization, and populists&—about the need to break away from the colonial legacies of the past and to escape from the constraints of the international capitalist system. Even though they disagreed about the desired end state, Argentines of all political stripes could agree on the need for economic independence and national sovereignty, which would be brought about through the efforts of a national bourgeoisie. James Brennan and Marcelo Rougier aim to provide a political history of this national bourgeoisie in this book. Deploying an eclectic methodology combining aspects of the &“new institutionalism,&” the &“new economic history,&” Marxist political economy, and deep research in numerous, rarely consulted archives into what they dub the &“new business history,&” the authors offer the first thorough, empirically based history of the national bourgeoisie&’s peak association, the Confederaci&ón General Econ&ómica (CGE), and of the Argentine bourgeoisie&’s relationship with the state. They also investigate the relationship of the bourgeoisie to Per&ón and the Peronist movement by studying the history of one industrial sector, the metalworking industry, and two regional economies&—one primarily industrial, C&órdoba, and another mostly agrarian, Chaco&—with some attention to a third, Tucum&án, a cane-cultivating and sugar-refining region sharing some features of both. While spanning three decades, the book concentrates most on the years of Peronist government, 1946&–55 and 1973&–76.

Robert Burns and the United States of America by Arun Sood Pdf

This book provides a critical study of the relationship between Robert Burns and the United States of America, c.1786-1866. Though Burns is commonly referred to as Scotland’s “National Poet”, his works were frequently reprinted in New York and Philadelphia; his verse mimicked by an emerging canon of American poets; and his songs appropriated by both abolitionists and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War era. Adopting a transnational, Atlantic Studies perspective that shifts emphasis from Burns as national poet to transnational icon, this book charts the reception, dissemination and cultural memory of Burns and his works in the United States up to 1866.
