Elusive Destiny by Paul Litt Pdf

A political biography extraordinaire, Elusive Destiny reveals the inner workings of the Liberal Party in its heyday as charted through the meteoric rise and fall of John Napier Turner. It highlights Turner’s vision for the country and tallies the political price he paid when he deviated from the Trudeau legacy on matters such as language rights, social spending, and Quebec. It also provides a new perspective on federal politics from the 1960s through the 1980s while giving John Turner his rightful place in Canadian history.

Minnesota and the Manifest Destiny of the Canadian Northwest by Alvin C. Gluek Jr. Pdf

From the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains, only a line separates Canada from the United States—the mute evidence of each nation's manifest destiny. As a boundary, the 49th parallel is entirely manmade and will never really divide the Northern Great Plains, for it is a region at once geographically and historically united. Certainly from 1821 to 1869-70, the years limiting this study, a unity was most evident; the history of the British Northwest was inextricably bound up with that of the American Northwest. Professor Gluek gives here a detailed and engrossing account of the complex relationship that developed between St. Paul and the Red River Settlement from 1821 to 1870. During this time, despite attempts by the Hudson's Bay Company to discourage free trade, the Red River Valley became the bridge upon which a broad economy was built. The economic bond was strengthened by the 1850's when Minnesota's transportation system to the outside world became so efficient that even the Company began to use it. Minnesotan dreams of engrossing all the commerce of the Northwest, and perhaps gaining Manitoba by default, were frustrated by the failure to renew the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854 and Canada's efforts to obtain Rupert's Land. Minnesota became militantly expansionist, but, despite her pleas in the late 1850's and 1860's for active United States intervention, little was really done. With distinctly superior diplomatic skills, Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, bested his American adversaries, won the Northwest for his young country, and assured it of transcontinental greatness. All of those who are interested in Canadian and American history—both the professional historian and everyone who is fascinated by the romance of the West—will enjoy this lively, well-written record of the people and the events of an important period in Canadian-American relations.

Manifest Destiny's Underworld by Robert E. May Pdf

This fascinating study sheds new light on antebellum America's notorious "filibusters--the freebooters and adventurers who organized or participated in armed invasions of nations with whom the United States was formally at peace. Offering the first full-scale analysis of the filibustering movement, Robert May relates the often-tragic stories of illegal expeditions into Cuba, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries and details surprising numbers of aborted plots, as well. May investigates why thousands of men joined filibustering expeditions, how they were financed, and why the U.S. government had little success in curtailing them. Surveying antebellum popular media, he shows how the filibustering phenomenon infiltrated the American psyche in newspapers, theater, music, advertising, and literature. Condemned abroad as pirates, frequently in language strikingly similar to modern American denunciations of foreign terrorists, the filibusters were often celebrated at home as heroes who epitomized the spirit of Manifest Destiny. May concludes by exploring the national consequences of filibustering, arguing that the practice inflicted lasting damage on U.S. relations with foreign countries and contributed to the North-South division over slavery that culminated in the Civil War.

Finding a New Midwestern History by Jon K. Lauck,Gleaves Whitney,Joseph Hogan Pdf

In comparison to such regions as the South, the far West, and New England, the Midwest and its culture have been neglected both by scholars and by the popular press. Historians as well as literary and art critics tend not to examine the Midwest in depth in their academic work. And in the popular imagination, the Midwest has never really ascended to the level of the proud, literary South; the cultured, democratic Northeast; or the hip, innovative West Coast. Finding a New Midwestern History revives and identifies anew the Midwest as a field of study by promoting a diversity of viewpoints and lending legitimacy to a more in-depth, rigorous scholarly assessment of a large region of the United States that has largely been overlooked by scholars. The essays discuss facets of midwestern life worth examining more deeply, including history, religion, geography, art, race, culture, and politics, and are written by well-known scholars in the field such as Michael Allen, Jon Butler, and Nicole Etcheson.

Outside Looking in by Mary Jane Miller Pdf

Using recent scholarship in ethnography and popular culture, Miller throws light on both what these series present and what is missing, how various long-standing issues are raised and framed differently over time, and what new issues appear. She looks at narrative arc, characterization, dialogue, and theme as well as how inflections of familiar genres like family adventure, soap opera, situation comedy, and legal drama shape both the series and viewers' expectations. Miller discusses Radisson, Forest Rangers and other children's series in the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as Beachcombers, Spirit Bay, The Rez, and North of 60 - series whose complex characters created rewarding relationships while dealing with issues ranging from addiction to unemployment to the aftermath of the residential school system.

The Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe by Hilda Roderick Ellis Davidson Pdf

"Fragments of ancient belief have been incorporated into folklore and Christian dogma with the result that its original tenets have merged with the myths and psychologies of the intervening years. Hilda Ellis Davidson sifts through centuries of cultural and religious influences to locate evidence of these "lost" pagan beliefs. Davidson illustrates how northern pagan religions have been represented and misinterpreted by the Christian tradition and throws light on the nature of such beliefs and how they have been preserved. The Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe stresses both the possibilities and the difficulties of investigating pre-Christian faiths and emphasizes the need to separate speculation from scientific proof. This book will be a useful tool for students with a serious interest in archaeology as it illustrates with examples how objectivity is not necessarily the driving force in forming our supposedly scientific view of the past. It will also appeal to the general reader who wants to understand the true nature of Northern European pagan belief as opposed to the oversimplified view popularized by the media. The Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe argues for intellectual rigorousness rather than romanticization of the past, and challenges the reader to rethink accepted interpretations"--Publisher description.
