Some Notes on Bach's Church-Cantatas (Classic Reprint) by Ebenezer Prout Pdf

Excerpt from Some Notes on Bach's Church-Cantatas Before leaving the chorales there is one point more which ought to be noticed. We often meet several different har monizations of the same chorale, according to the words to which it is set. In several cases five or six versions of the same tune are to be found, and sometimes changes are in troduced even in the melody itself. The well-known Passion chorale O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, which everyone will recognize under its English title, '0 sacred Head once wounded', is found in various works of Bach in nearly a dozen difi'erent arrangements. He sometimes harmonizes itin its original mode, the Phrygian; at other times he treats it in the Ionian mode; most of you will remember the striking effect which Bach produces in the Passion according to Matthew, when, on the final appearance of the chorale, toward the close of the work, instead of ending, as he had previously done, with a full cadence in the major key. Bach & God by Michael Marissen Pdf

Bach & God explores the religious character of Bach's vocal and instrumental music in seven interrelated essays. Noted musicologist Michael Marissen offers wide-ranging interpretive insights from careful biblical and theological scrutiny of the librettos. Yet he also shows how Bach's pitches, rhythms, and tone colors can make contributions to a work's plausible meanings that go beyond setting texts in an aesthetically satisfying manner. In some of Bach's vocal repertory, the music puts a "spin" on the words in a way that turns out to be explainable as orthodox Lutheran in its orientation. In a few of Bach's vocal works, his otherwise puzzlingly fierce musical settings serve to underscore now unrecognized or unacknowledged verbal polemics, most unsettlingly so in the case of his church cantatas that express contempt for Jews and Judaism. Finally, even Bach's secular instrumental music, particularly the late collections of "abstract" learned counterpoint, can powerfully project certain elements of traditional Lutheran theology. Bach's music is inexhaustible, and Bach & God suggests that through close contextual study there is always more to discover and learn.

Bach: Three Sonatas and Three Partitas for Solo Violin by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Pdf

Dr. Lawrence Golan's edition of Bach's masterpieces for solo violin combines the authenticity and accuracy of a Scholarly Urtext Edition with the practicality and helpfulness of a Performing Edition. A facsimile of Bach's autograph manuscript was used in the preparation of this edition and the composer's intentions have been preserved to the last detail. of particular note is the fact that all stems have been beamed together as they appear in the autograph manuscript. This is of great importance when making interpretive decisions regarding dotted rhythms. Helpful fingering and bowing suggestions are provided by the editor, but are clearly distinguished from Bach's original notation, allowing the performer the freedom to accept or reject any given suggestion. the volume comes complete with Dr. Golan's essay Performing Bach: Dotted Rhythms and Trills in the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, which also includes scholarly discussions of vibrato, fingerings, bowing styles, and ritardandos in Baroque music. the inclusion of this comprehensive study of Baroque performance practices makes this edition a must for any violinist interested in performing the Bach Sonatas and Partitas in an historically informed manner.

The Letters of C.P.E. Bach by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Pdf

This is a complete edition of the correspondence of the most famous of J.S. Bach's sons. Very few of these letters have appeared previously in English translation. They provide a fascinating picture of an eighteenth-century composer hard at work publishing his own music, debating aesthetic matters, and championing the music and teachings of his father. The readable translation, detailed index, extensive cross referencing, and glossary of names make this an accessible and useful volume.
