Customs of Cambodia by Zhou Daguan Pdf
In 1296 AD, Chinese traveler Zhou Daguan visited Angkor--capital of Cambodia's powerful Khmer Empire--as a member of a diplomatic mission sent by Emperor Temür Khan. Today, Zhou's written record of his residency is the only surviving eyewitness account of that extraordinary and mysterious time and place. ***Zhou shared intriguing aspects of the country's complex society, blended with subtle details of its customs, religion, flora and fauna. Today, his words offer the most credible glimpse of Cambodian life at the end of the 13th century. ***This illustrated color edition--with a foreword by renowned author and mathematician Amir D. Aczel--offers an original translation of one of the earliest records of Zhou's voyage. Based on their personal knowledge of Chinese and Cambodian culture, language and geography, the authors' insights clarify linguistic puzzles that have been unresolved for centuries. For the first time, unidentified places, titles, plants, animals and other details come to life, giving readers a more accurate vision of the ancient Khmer Empire through Zhou Daguan's eyes.

A History of Early Southeast Asia by Kenneth R. Hall Pdf
This comprehensive history provides a fresh interpretation of Southeast Asia from 100 to 1500, when major social and economic developments foundational to modern societies took place on the mainland (Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) and the island world (Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines). Incorporating the latest archeological evidence and international scholarship, Kenneth R. Hall enlarges upon prior histories of early Southeast Asia that did not venture beyond 1400, extending the study of the region to the Portuguese seizure of Melaka in 1511. Written for a wide audience of non-specialists, the book will be essential reading for all those interested in Asian and world history.

A Record of Cambodia by Zhou Daguan Pdf
Translated, with an introduction and notes, by Peter Harris Only one person has given us a first-hand account of the civilization of Angkor. This is the Chinese envoy, Zhou Daguan, who visited Angkor in 1296–97 and wrote A Record of Cambodia: The Land and Its People after his return to China. To this day, Zhou’s description of the royal palace, sacred buildings, women, traders, slaves, hill people, animals, landscapes, and everyday life remains a unique portrait of thirteenth-century Angkor at a time when its splendors were still intact. Very little is known about Zhou Daguan. He was born on or near the southeastern coast of China, and was probably a young man when he traveled to Cambodia by boat. After returning home he faded into obscurity, though he seems to have lived on for several decades. Much of the text of Zhou’s book seems to have been lost over the centuries, but what remains still gives us a lively sense of Zhou the man as well as of Angkor. In this edition, Peter Harris translates Zhou Daguan’s work directly from Chinese to English to be published for the first time. Earlier English versions depended on a French translation done over a century ago, and lost much of the feeling of the original as a result. This entirely new rendering, which draws on a range of available versions of the Zhou text, brings Zhou’s many observations vividly and accurately back to life. An introduction and extensive notes help explain the text and put it in the context of the times. “Peter Harris has given a new generation of readers a masterly version of Zhou’s timeless and fascinating account that scholars of Cambodia are sure to relish and visitors to Angkor are sure to enjoy.”—David Chandler

Crossing Three Wildernesses by U Sam Oeur,Ken McCullough Pdf
"In Crossing Three Wildernesses, U Sam Oeur presents a detailed portrait of a twentieth century Cambodian life - a life that followed an incredible trajectory from his near-idyllic childhood to his years as a government official, from the devastating reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge to the subsequent Vietnamese takeover and postwar chaos. A witness personally touched by the three wildernesses - death by execution, death by disease, and death by starvation - U Sam Oeur emerged from the experience with his hope for peace, freedom, and the power of literature unshaken. As Oeur relates his attempts to serve his native land in a time of terrible crisis, he creates a stirring portrait of the people, the myths, and the traditions of this beautiful, complex country."--BOOK JACKET.

The Handbook of Contemporary Cambodia by Katherine Brickell,Simon Springer Pdf
Offering a comprehensive overview of the current situation in the country, The Handbook of Contemporary Cambodia provides a broad coverage of social, cultural, political and economic development within both rural and urban contexts during the last decade. A detailed introduction places Cambodia within its global and regional frame, and the handbook is then divided into five thematic sections: Political and Economic Tensions Rural Developments Urban Conflicts Social Processes Cultural Currents The first section looks at the major political implications and tensions that have occurred in Cambodia, as well as the changing parameters of its economic profile. The handbook then highlights the major developments that are unfolding within the rural sphere, before moving on to consider how cities in Cambodia, and particularly Phnom Penh, have become primary sites of change. The fourth section covers the major processes that have shaped social understandings of the country, and how Cambodians have come to understand themselves in relation to each other and the outside world. Section five analyses the cultural dimensions of Cambodia’s current experience, and how identity comes into contact with and responds to other cultural themes. Bringing together a team of leading scholars on Cambodia, the handbook presents an understanding of how sociocultural and political economic processes in the country have evolved. It is a cutting edge and interdisciplinary resource for scholars and students of Southeast Asian Studies, as well as policymakers, sociologists and political scientists with an interest in contemporary Cambodia.

Youth Culture and the Music Industry in Contemporary Cambodia by Darathtey Din Pdf
This book explores young Cambodians’ perceptions of their place in today’s society and how they interact with the country’s arts and culture scene. The popularity of Cambodian hip-hop among youth presents an opportunity for research to dive deeper into the roles of popular music in society and how these roles, in turn, shape Cambodian cultural identities. Research on the above-mentioned topic by local researchers is scarce. There is a gap in the research on the topic of identity, its connection to arts and culture, and how these two are positioned in a broader context of Cambodian identity politics and cultural economy. This book aims to provide a starting point for observation and conversation about youth cultural identities and the subtexts of certain narratives disseminated through music. The book contributes to the global research agenda by adding to the few voices in academia looking at localised models of cultural economies and trying to understand them based on local phenomena observed through local lenses. Utilising the author’s perspective and social experiences as a Cambodian researcher growing up and living in Cambodia, the book provides a unique perspective of the country’s cultural landscape. This will make the book of interest to all scholars of international cultural policy and the global creative economy, especially those with a particular interest in Cambodia.
