Notes on the Manufacture of Wood Pulp and Wood-Pulp Papers (Classic Reprint) by James Dunbar Pdf

Excerpt from Notes on the Manufacture of Wood Pulp and Wood-Pulp Papers In my previous efforts to put before the paper trade a reliable Guide to the Manufacture of Paper, based upon my own practical experience, I confined myself to the raw material best known to me at that time. But since the issue of the last edition of my book a decade in papermaking seems to have passed over us; and, with the advent of a popular and comparatively new material, which is better known on the Continent of Europe than with us, and which is fast coming to the front, I consider the present a fit opportunity to put my experience of wood fibre manipulation on the Continent before the trade. The result I leave to practical men. If I am enabled to add a little to the knowledge of those engaged in the papermaking industry (especially the rising and younger portion), it will be a pleasure to me to know that I have thus been of some help to them. I have endeavoured to confine myself to what I consider up-to-date information relating to Wood Pulp and Wood-Pulp Papers, and the application of the latest ideas to machinery used in their manufacture, with suggested improvements which have for their object the saving of time and consequent cheapening of production. The Use of Wood Pulp for Paper-Making (Classic Reprint) by S. Chas Philipps Pdf

Excerpt from The Use of Wood Pulp for Paper-Making Messrs. Iwan Koechlin Co. Have carried on the bachet-machard Patent at the Isle Saint Martin, near Chatel (vosges), France, and it has also been experimented with on a large scale at Bex and at St. Tryphon, Switzerland. At the start the inventors had in view the saccharification of wood, the paper pulp being intended to be only a secondary product of the manufacture of alcohol; but in practice the inverse result has been obtained, the paper pulp becoming the principal product, and alcohol the secondary one. Chemistry of Pulp, and Paper Making (Classic Reprint) by Edwin Sutermeister Pdf

Excerpt from Chemistry of Pulp, and Paper Making Regarding the methods of analysis and testing which are given it may be said that the attempt has been made to include all which are necessary for routine work in controlling opera tions. There are many occasional analyses which it is necessary to make during special investigations, but it is impractical to include all of these and for such methods reference must be made to the numerous standard text-books of analytical procedure. Wood Pulp and Its Uses (Classic Reprint) by Charles Frederick Cross Pdf

Excerpt from Wood Pulp and Its Uses The world has had its Stone age and its Bronze age: later its Iron age, and the present is a Cellulose age. This is not said ad captandum: it is a statement which will survive critical examination. The volume now offered to students and the general public is based on studies in the domain of cellulose, both theoretical and scientific, and practical or industrial. It is not a monograph or a test-book of the subject: it does not pretend to be systematic or exhaustive. Technical literature in these days threatens to develop to formidable dimensions; and systematic works on branches of technology necessarily carry a large weight of fact and information which is common groundwork. We have only given an outline of what appears essential as a cyclopaedic framework. We are not addressing ourselves particularly to the specialist, nor to the technical student. Rather to the general reader, and our aim is therefore to give a general account of the evolution of the wood pulp industries, as typical of the age we live in, and as a very substantial contribution to its primary necessities. Forest Products of Canada, 1909: Pulp Wood (Classic Reprint) by Harvey Reginald Macmillan Pdf

Excerpt from Forest Products of Canada, 1909: Pulp Wood Three-fifths or 608 per cent of the pulpwood manufactured in Canada was reduced by mechanical process; the sulphite process accounted for over one-third per cent) of the wood used, and the remainder (2 per cent) was manufactured lay the soda process. Spruce was the chief wood used in each process of manufacture. Over one-half (579 per cent) of the spruce was used for mechanical pulp; two-fifths (406 per cent) was manufactured into sulphite pulp, and the remainder per cent) was manufactured by the soda process. Balsam was used in the mechanical and sulphite processes only, and found greatest favour in the mechanical process ov'er four-fifths (81 '3 per cent) of the balsam was used in the mechanical process. Poplar is not adapted for manufacture by the mechanical or grinding process (98 3 per cent) of the poplar used was manufactured by the chemical processes, per cent) in sulphite mills and (405 per cent) in soda mills. The soda process, though expensive, may be successfully used with more varieties of wood than the other processes. The small quantities of hemlock used was manufactured into soda pulp. Pulp and Paper by F. P. Veitch Pdf

Excerpt from Pulp and Paper: And Other Products From Waste Resinous Woods The production of rosin oils, tars, and pitches from common rosin is also a thoroughly established, well-understood, and profitable industry. With these successful results in view, it is at once clear that a combination of the three industries, using waste wood as the raw mate rial from which all the products of these industries may be made, should be more profitable and require less capital, equipment, and labor than the three when conducted separately. Since each of these industries, paper-making, wood distillation, and rosin-oil production, is already well developed and the details quite well understood, no experimental demonstration on a manufacturing scale is needed to prove-the practicability of the combination of the three. In Short, such combination under one management is the most logical industrial condition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reading List on Papermaking Materials (Classic Reprint) by Clarence J. West Pdf

Excerpt from Reading List on Papermaking Materials Papyri was followed by cotton and linen papers, and very much later, by straw and by chemical and mechanical wood pulp. Though the threatened shortage of pulp wood has created re newed interest in other fibrous materials which may be used in the manufacture of paper, this interest is by no means confined to the present time. As early as 1765 Jacob Christian Schaeffer of Regensburg, Germany, published a work upon the different plants which he could transform into paper without the use of rags and gave Specimens of papers prepared from poplar down, tree moss, hop tendrils, bark of grape vine, hemp, mulberry, aloe leaves, stinging nettle, bull-rush, cabbage stalks, water moss, turf, leaves of the lily of the valley, mallow, orache, Indian corn, genista, potato skins, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Forest Products of Canada, 1914 by Richard Garwood Lewis Pdf

Excerpt from Forest Products of Canada, 1914: Pulpwood In the mechanical process, where the fibres are more or less broken and their strength impaired, only the best quality of pulpwood can he used. The machinery, however, 1s comparatively cheap and easily installed, and as long as the supply of good pulpw oed was convenient this process was largely used. Of late years the quantity of wood used in the sulphite process has steadily increased in spite of the high cost of installing the necessary plant. In this process the wood requirements are not so exacting, and the higher price for the pulp produced compensates for the greater cost 'of the plant. The Manufacture of Paper (Classic Reprint) by R. W. Sindall Pdf

Excerpt from The Manufacture of Paper Paper-making, in common with many other industries, is one in which both engineering and chemistry play important parts. Unfortunately the functions of the engineer and chemist are generally regarded as independent of one another, so that the chemist is only called in by the engineer when efforts along the lines of mechanical improvement have failed, and vice versa. It is impossible, however, to draw a hard and fast line, and the best results in the art of paper-making are only possible when the manufacturer appreciates the fact that the skill of both is essential to progress and commercial success. In the present elementary text-book it is only proposed to give an outline of the various stages of manufacture and to indicate some of the improvements made during recent years. The author begs to acknowledge his indebtedness to manufacturers and others who have given permission for the use of illustrations. Cheap Modernism by Lise Jaillant Pdf

We often think of Mrs Dalloway or A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as difficult books, originally published in small print runs for a handful of readers. But from the mid-1920s, these texts and others were available in cheap format across Europe. Uniform series of reprints such as the Travellers' Library, the Phoenix Library, Tauchnitz and Albatross sold modernism to a wide audience - thus transforming a little-read "e;highbrow"e; movement into a popular phenomenon. The expansion of the readership for modernism was not only vertical (from "e;high"e; to "e;low"e;) but also spatial - since publisher's series were distributed within and outside metropolitan centres in Britain, continental Europe and elsewhere. Many non-English native speakers discovered texts by Joyce, Woolf and others in the original language - a fact that has rarely been mentioned in histories of modernism. Drawing on extensive work in neglected archives, Cheap Modernism will be of interest to all those who want to know how the new literature became a global commercial hit.
