Nuclei in the Cosmos III Third International Symposium on Nuclear Astrophysics by Maurizio Busso,Roberto Gallino,Claudia, M. Raiteri Pdf

Annotation The July 1994 symposium was an international forum in which scientists working in different research branches connected to nucleosynthesis could discuss the most recent achievements in nuclear astrophysics. The topics addressed range from laboratory work of nuclear astrophysics, especially on reaction rates, to models of nucleosynthesis in single and double stars; from measurements of abundances and isotopic anomalies in pristine meteorites to the reconstruction of the early evolutionary phases of the Solar System; and from optical and radio spectroscopic studies of the composition in stellar atmospheres and circumstellar envelopes to modeling of the global chemical evolution of galaxies. No subject index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Advances in Stellar Evolution by Robert T. Rood,Alvio Renzini Pdf

An understanding of how stars evolve is central to astrophysics. The basic theory is well established. However, the subject has undergone a renaissance in recent years as powerful computers have become widely available and allowed complex evolutionary models to be developed and compared in great detail with observations from the latest instruments. This timely volume presents the review articles from an international meeting in Elba, Italy, where experts gathered to review how our understanding of stellar evolution has advanced. Topics covered include fundamentals of stellar evolution, star clusters, variable stars, asymptotic giant branch stars, degenerate stars, the evolution of binary stars, and chemical and galactic evolution. Throughout, theory and observation are closely compared. The book also emphasises the critical role stars have on our understanding of how galaxies evolve. In this book we are provided with both the fundamentals and the latest research. In this way, it will provide an invaluable supplement for graduate students, and a timely review for researchers.

Formation and Evolution of Solids in Space by J. Mayo Greenberg,Aigen Li Pdf

Interstellar dust, meteorites, interplanetary dust particles (IDP's), the zodiacal light, comets, comet dust. Where do they come from, what are they made of, how do they evolve, and finally, are there connections between them? These are the questions discussed in this volume by some of the world's outstanding experts in their respective fields. The techniques used for studying the `small' solid objects of space are thoroughly discussed. Some of the methods involve a synthetic approach using the laboratory to create analog environments and materials which are believed to resemble those in space. Others use direct laboratory methods with state-of-the-art analytical tools to study the material of the objects themselves - meteorites, IDP'S. And others apply the latest in astronomical facilities to provide quantitative data on the material properties of the solids which can only be deduced from remote observations, These are compared with the laboratory results. In one instance there was a possibility to study a solar system body in situ and that was the case of comet Halley and some of the results of these studies obtained from space `laboratories' launched to meet it are discussed here. Finally, there are theoretical papers which are aimed at bridging the results of observational and laboratory methods. This book is recommended to senior scientists as well as graduate students who wish to pursue research in interstellar and solar system astronomy and their connections.

Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses by Juha Äystö,Peter Dendooven,Ari Jokinen,Matti Leino Pdf

The ENAM2001 Conference was held on July 2-7, 2001 at the Rantasipi Aulanko Hotel in Hameenlinna in southern Finland. The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.
