Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations—III, SYNSPADE 1975 by Bert Hubbard Pdf

Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations—III: Synspade 1975 provides information pertinent to those difficult problems in partial differential equations exhibiting some type of singular behavior. This book covers a variety of topics, including the mathematical models and their relation to experiment as well as the behavior of solutions of the partial differential equations involved. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of elastodynamic results for stress intensity factors of a bifurcating crack. This text then discusses the effects of nonlinearities, such as bifurcation, which occur in problems of nonlinear mechanics. Other chapters consider the equations of changing type and those with rapidly oscillating coefficients. This book discusses as well the effective computational methods for numerical solutions. The final chapter deals with the principal results on G-convergence, such as the convergence of the Green's operators for Dirichlet's and other boundary problems. This book is a valuable resource for engineers and mathematicians.

Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations—II, Synspade 1970 by Bert Hubbard Pdf

Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations—II: Synspade 1970 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of partial differential equations. This book covers a variety of topics that range from mathematical numerical analysis to numerical methods applied to problems in mechanics, meteorology, and fluid dynamics. Organized into 18 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the methods of the Rayleigh–Ritz–Galerkin type for the approximation of boundary value problems using spline basis functions and Sobolev spaces. This text then analyzes a special approach aimed at solving elliptical equations. Other chapters consider the approximation theoretic study of special sets of approximating functions. This book discusses as well combining the alternating-direction methods with Galerkin methods to obtain highly efficient procedures for the numerical solution of second order parabolic and hyperbolic problems. The final chapter deals with the results concerning Chebyshev rational approximations of reciprocals of certain entire functions. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Numerical Approximation of Partial Differential Equations by E.L. Ortiz Pdf

This selection of papers is concerned with problems arising in the numerical solution of differential equations, with an emphasis on partial differential equations. There is a balance between theoretical studies of approximation processes, the analysis of specific numerical techniques and the discussion of their application to concrete problems relevant to engineering and science. Special consideration has been given to innovative numerical techniques and to the treatment of three-dimensional and singular problems. These topics are discussed in several of the invited papers. The contributed papers are divided into five parts: techniques of approximation theory which are basic to the numerical treatment of differential equations; numerical techniques based on discrete processes; innovative methods based on polynomial and rational approximation; variational inequalities, conformal transformation and asymptotic techniques; and applications of differential equations to problems in science and engineering.

Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Methods for Science and Technology by Robert Dautray,Jacques-Louis Lions Pdf

The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Every facet of technical and industrial activity has been affected by these developments. The objective of the present work is to compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form.

Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics I by Michael Sh. Birman,Stefan Hildebrandt,Vsevolod A. Solonnikov,Nina N. Uraltseva Pdf

The new series, International Mathematical Series founded by Kluwer / Plenum Publishers and the Russian publisher, Tamara Rozhkovskaya is published simultaneously in English and in Russian and starts with two volumes dedicated to the famous Russian mathematician Professor Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. O.A. Ladyzhenskaya graduated from the Moscow State University. But throughout her career she has been closely connected with St. Petersburg where she works at the V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Many generations of mathematicians have become familiar with the nonlinear theory of partial differential equations reading the books on quasilinear elliptic and parabolic equations written by O.A. Ladyzhenskaya with V.A. Solonnikov and N.N. Uraltseva. Her results and methods on the Navier-Stokes equations, and other mathematical problems in the theory of viscous fluids, nonlinear partial differential equations and systems, the regularity theory, some directions of computational analysis are well known. So it is no surprise that these two volumes attracted leading specialists in partial differential equations and mathematical physics from more than 15 countries, who present their new results in the various fields of mathematics in which the results, methods, and ideas of O.A. Ladyzhenskaya played a fundamental role. Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics I presents new results from distinguished specialists in the theory of partial differential equations and analysis. A large part of the material is devoted to the Navier-Stokes equations, which play an important role in the theory of viscous fluids. In particular, the existence of a local strong solution (in the sense of Ladyzhenskaya) to the problem describing some special motion in a Navier-Stokes fluid is established. Ladyzhenskaya's results on axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes fluid are generalized and solutions with fast decay of nonstationary Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space are stated. Application of the Fourier-analysis to the study of the Stokes wave problem and some interesting properties of the Stokes problem are presented. The nonstationary Stokes problem is also investigated in nonconvex domains and some Lp-estimates for the first-order derivatives of solutions are obtained. New results in the theory of fully nonlinear equations are presented. Some asymptotics are derived for elliptic operators with strongly degenerated symbols. New results are also presented for variational problems connected with phase transitions of means in controllable dynamical systems, nonlocal problems for quasilinear parabolic equations, elliptic variational problems with nonstandard growth, and some sufficient conditions for the regularity of lateral boundary. Additionally, new results are presented on area formulas, estimates for eigenvalues in the case of the weighted Laplacian on Metric graph, application of the direct Lyapunov method in continuum mechanics, singular perturbation property of capillary surfaces, partially free boundary problem for parametric double integrals.

Large Engineering Systems by Alvin Wexler Pdf

Large Engineering Systems documents the proceedings of the International Symposium held at the University of Manitoba, Canada on August 9-12, 1976. This book compiles papers on the technology of large engineering systems. The topics discussed include the analysis of an automobile body by finite element method; finite-element solution of boundary integral equations; optimum design of stiffened plate girders; and tuning of miniaturized analog hybrid circuits. The sparsity in large systems and trans-shipment problems; finite difference method with graded lattices; Kron's multidimensional electromagnetic networks; and analyses of large systems are also deliberated. This text likewise covers the transient phenomena in large electrical power systems; modeling for regional electric power supply system; and efficient method for reliability evaluation of large-scale systems. This publication is a good source for engineers who intend to acquire knowledge on large-scale engineering systems.
