Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 38: November 1941 (Classic Reprint) by Carroll K. Shaw Pdf

Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 38: November 1941 Time permits me only to mention that I spent many def lightful weeks in Cambridge, entranced by the beauty of the place and fascinated by the students fluttering about on bicycles in their tattered old gowns. I believe that only one college in Cambridge has been hit by a bomb and so far as I know the damage was not extensive. Oxford has entirely escaped so far. You have all heard of the English schoolmaster who recited the lines, Oh to be in England now that April's here to a class of small children and asked who wrote them. A small boy responded gleefully that he knew. It was Hitler. A year ago I was saying in agony of mind Oh, to be in Oberlin now that September's here. Neither Hitler nor I obtained our objectives. There were too many diplo' mats and government officials ahead of me for seats on the plane to Lisbon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 37 by Carroll K. Shaw Pdf

Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 37: May, 1941 Oberlin offered work of a sort in physical education in the seventies; from 1874 to 1880, the old Music Hall had served as the Ladies' Gymnasium, with student teachers in charge. President Fairchild voiced a self-evident truth in his report to the Board of Trustees in 1880, when he said, A more thorough organization, under the charge of an officer of the College, would doubtless secure better results. When, in the following year, the old Music Hall was de stroyed by fire, provision was made in the proposed annex to Ladies' Hall for a new gymnasium, and it was completed for the fall term in 1881. When Miss Hanna began work as a school teacher in 1884, in Fairport, New York, she became convinced that both teachers and students needed physical education founded upon a scientific basis. A summer school term with Dio Lewis confirmed her in that view, and so she went to the private Normal School of Physical Training conducted by Dr. Dudley A. Sargeant of Harvard. It was in 1885, that Miss Hanna applied for a position at Oberlin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 38: May 1942 No one could possibly receive the honor I am having at your hands tonight without being greatly touched by it even though he knows full well that his accomplishments are being greatly over/rated. Let me, then, thank you most heartily for your mistake and pray that you may never dis' cover it but rather die in the faith. I suspect, however, that some among you know the truth already and that probably accounts for the fact that I have received the official injunction not to be too serious in making my reply and if possible to put in a touch of humor. Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 28 by John G. Olmstead Pdf

Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 28: November, 1931 The number of alumni children takes a decided drop from the number in the last three classes. Last year there were this year only 52 including both Col lege and Conservatory. There are 9 students though with advanced standing, one graduate student and two part - time students who can claim Oberlin paren tage. The 52 name 70 parents, 31 mothers and 39 fathers, who have trod the campus beneath the elms. The 23 women have an equal number of mothers and fathers, 15 each, but the 28 men have only 16 mothers to 24 fathers in this group. This raises an interesting question; why are more fathers sending their sons to Ober lin? Six women and 12 men had both parents attend Oberlin. Oi the women's parents 20 are gradu ates and 9 non - grads; of the men's par ents 27 are grads and 14 non - grads. The class of 1907 contributes 6 parents, that of 1911 five. Sixteen parents attended Oberlin prior to 1900, one dating back to 1881. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 25: November, 1928 After a week of gorgeous weather, Home-coming day on Saturday, Oc tober 13, was dull and a little cool. But it did not discourage many of those who had made their plans to come to Oberlin, for by noon the town was full of cars and the streets alive with people, half familiar, half strange. They were arriving from Boston, New York, Chicago, from Buf falo, Pittsburgh and Rochester, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Toledo and by the scores from nearer cities. The town was hung with flags and bunting in Oberlin's crimson and gold and Wooster's black and gold, and Welcome Alumni and Welcome Woos ter signs were everywhere. The real feature of the morning were the boarding house decorations which were judged at noon. The members of the various houses had been working on them since the dark hours of the morning, and anxiously scanning the skies for possible dam age. The silver cup went for the second time to Delta Lodge, who portrayed Oberlin's Aerial Attack, an Oberlin plane with roaring engine bombing the Wooster campus with a football bomb, having left Akron smoldering in ruins in the distance.
