Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 28 by John G. Olmstead Pdf

Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 28: November, 1931 The number of alumni children takes a decided drop from the number in the last three classes. Last year there were this year only 52 including both Col lege and Conservatory. There are 9 students though with advanced standing, one graduate student and two part - time students who can claim Oberlin paren tage. The 52 name 70 parents, 31 mothers and 39 fathers, who have trod the campus beneath the elms. The 23 women have an equal number of mothers and fathers, 15 each, but the 28 men have only 16 mothers to 24 fathers in this group. This raises an interesting question; why are more fathers sending their sons to Ober lin? Six women and 12 men had both parents attend Oberlin. Oi the women's parents 20 are gradu ates and 9 non - grads; of the men's par ents 27 are grads and 14 non - grads. The class of 1907 contributes 6 parents, that of 1911 five. Sixteen parents attended Oberlin prior to 1900, one dating back to 1881. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What Then Must We Do? by Gar Alperovitz Pdf

"Never before have so many Americans been more frustrated with our economic system, more fearful that it is failing, or more open to fresh ideas about a new one. The seeds of a new economy--and, if we act upon it, a new system--are forming. What is that next system? It's not corporate capitalism, not state socialism, but something else--something entirely American. In What Then Must We Do?, Gar Alperovitz speaks directly to the reader about why the time is right for a revolutionary new economy movement, what it means to democratize the ownership of wealth, what it will take to build a new system to replace the decaying one--and how to strengthen our communities through cooperatives, worker-owned companies, neighborhood corporations, small and medium-size independent businesses, and publicly owned enterprises. For the growing group of Americans pacing at the edge of confidence in the old system, or already among its detractors, What Then Must We Do? offers an evolutionary, common-sense solution for moving from despair and anger to strategy and action."--Publisher's website.

Sport and American Society by Mark Dyreson,J. A. Mangan Pdf

A special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport, this collection of provocative essays explores the many faces of sport in America. Drawing upon insights from anthropology, history, philosophy and sociology and with reference throughout to politics and economics, the contributors outline the story of how American sport has contributed to a climate of insularity, exceptionalism and imperialism, from a symbolic rejection of British rule and British sports to the current status of all-American sports such as baseball and basketball in the face of globalization.

Women Public Speakers in the United States, 1800-1925 by Karlyn Kohrs Campbell Pdf

From the nation's beginnings, efforts have been made to silence U.S. women. Yet they spoke. This biographical dictionary, the first of two companion volumes, gives their voices new recognition. Selecting thirty-seven key orators, Karlyn Kohrs Campbell provides entries on a diverse group of women. All were ground breakers--suffragists, the first lawyers, ministers, physicians, labor organizers, newspaper editors and publishers, historians, educators, even soldiers. The volume opens with Campbell's introduction and then provides extensive essays on each of the women included. Each entry begins with brief biographical information and then focuses on the woman's public life in discourse. Each entry includes an analysis of the subject's rhetoric. Entries conclude with information on primary sources, critical works, key rhetorical documents, and selected sources of historical and biographical information. The work is fully indexed.

Constructing Black Education at Oberlin College by Roland M. Baumann Pdf

In 1835 Oberlin became the first institute of higher education to make a cause of racial egalitarianism when it decided to educate students “irrespective of color.” Yet the visionary college’s implementation of this admissions policy was uneven. In Constructing Black Education at Oberlin College: A Documentary History, Roland M. Baumann presents a comprehensive documentary history of the education of African American students at Oberlin College. Following the Reconstruction era, Oberlin College mirrored the rest of society as it reduced its commitment to black students by treating them as less than equals of their white counterparts. By the middle of the twentieth century, black and white student activists partially reclaimed the Oberlin legacy by refusing to be defined by race. Generations of Oberlin students, plus a minority of faculty and staff, rekindled the college’s commitment to racial equality by 1970. In time, black separatism in its many forms replaced the integrationist ethic on campus as African Americans sought to chart their own destiny and advance curricular change. Oberlin’s is not a story of unbroken progress, but rather of irony, of contradictions and integrity, of myth and reality, and of imperfections. Baumann takes readers directly to the original sources by including thirty complete documents from the Oberlin College Archives. This richly illustrated volume is an important contribution to the college’s 175th anniversary celebration of its distinguished history, for it convincinglydocuments how Oberlin wrestled over the meaning of race and the destiny of black people in American society.

Creating the Big Game by Wiley L. Umphlett Pdf

John W. Heisman (1869-1936) was a man of many faces whose public image has suffered from a diffused, enigmatic, and mostly misunderstood private personality. Since his death the popular reception of the memorial trophy named in his honor has also obscured his identity. In singling out his many innovative contributions to the development of intercollegiate football, this book attempts to present a true picture of Heisman as both man and coach. Because he coached at schools throughout the country during some of the most eventful years in our history, Heisman's life relates to significant political, economic, and social developments that impacted on American society as well as sports. However, this book is much more than the story of John Heisman's 36-year coaching career. It is also the story of how an indigenous American public ritual--the Big Game---came about and how college football evolved into the complex, problematic, and highly structured big business that it is today.
